Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus
(Mark 8:11‑13; Luke 12:54‑5)

But in response to them, he said, [“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ But in response to them, he said, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’
ὑποκριταί, τὸ μὲν πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ γινώσκετε διακρίνειν, τὰ δὲ σημεῖα τῶν καιρῶν οὐ δύνασθε;
And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?] And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?
A wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jōnah.” And after leaving them, he went away. A wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jōnah.” And after leaving them, he went away.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
(Mark 8:14‑21)

And after coming to the other side of the sea, the disciples forgot to bring food. And after coming to the other side of the sea, his disciples forgot to bring food.
Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “We didn’t bring any bread.” They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “We didn’t bring any bread.”
16:8 γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; 8 γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβετε;
But after noticing, Jesus said, “Oh little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no food? But after noticing, Jesus said to them, “Oh little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no food?
16:9 οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετε; 9 οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων, καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετε;
Don’t you yet understand or remember the five loaves of the 5000, and how many full baskets you received? Don’t you yet understand or remember the five loaves of the 5000, and how many full baskets you received?
16:10 οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετε; 10 οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων, καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετε;
Or the seven loaves of the 4000, and how many large baskets you received? Or the seven loaves of the 4000, and how many large baskets you received?
16:11 πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτων εἶπον ὑμῖν;
11 πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε, ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτου εἶπον ὑμῖν προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων;
How do you not understand that I didn’t speak to you concerning food? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” How do you not understand that I didn’t speak to you concerning food, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?”
Then they understood that he didn’t say to beware of the leaven of them, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he didn’t say to beware of the leaven of it, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter’s Confession of Christ
(Mark 8:27‑30; Luke 9:18‑21)

16:13 Ἐλθὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ μέρη Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου ἠρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων, τίνα λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; 13 Ἐλθὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ μέρη Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου ἠρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ, λέγων, τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι, τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
Now after coming into the districts of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus kept asking his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?” Now after coming into the districts of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus kept asking his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say Jōhn the Baptist; and others, Ēlijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” And they said, “Some say Jōhn the Baptist; and others, Ēlijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
16:15 λέγει αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι; 15 λέγει αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι;
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
And in response, Simōn Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And in response, Simōn Peter said, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And in response to him, Jesus said, “Blessed are you, Simōn Barjōna, because flesh and blood didn’t reveal this to you, but my Father who is in the heavens. And in response to him, Jesus said, “Blessed are you, Simōn Barjōna, because flesh and blood didn’t reveal this to you, but my Father who is in the heavens.
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in the heavens.” And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in the heavens.”
Then he charged the disciples so that they should tell no one that he is the Christ. Then he charged his disciples so that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death
(Mark 8:31–9:1; Luke 9:22‑27)

And after taking him aside, Peter began to rebuke him, saying, “May God be gracious to you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” And after taking him aside, Peter began to rebuke him, saying, “May God be gracious to you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
But after turning, he said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! you are my stumbling block;[1] because you are not thinking the things of God but the things of man.” But after turning, he said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! you are my stumbling block;[1] because you are not thinking the things of God but the things of man.”

Discipleship Is Costly

Truly I say to you that there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Truly I say to you that there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
