Tradition and Commandment
(Mark 7:1‑23)

15:3 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν; 3 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, διατί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;

15:4 ὁ γὰρ θεὸς εἶπεν, τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα, καὶ, ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω. 4 ὁ γὰρ θεὸς ἐνετείλατο, λέγων, τίμα τὸν πατέρα σοῦ, καὶ τὴν μητέρα· καὶ, ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω·
For God said, ‘honour your father and mother,’[1] and, ‘He who curses father or mother is to be put to death.’[2] For God said, ‘honour your father and mother,’[1] and, ‘He who curses father or mother is to be put to death.’[2]
15:5 ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε, ὃς ἄν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί, δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς, 5 ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε, ὃς ἄν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί, δῶρον, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς, καὶ οὐ μὴ τιμήσῃ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ· ἢ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ·
But you say, ‘Whoever says to father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help is a gift,” But you say, ‘Whoever says to father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help is a gift,” does not honour his father or his mother’;
15:6 οὐ μὴ τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν. 6 καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν.

15:7 ὑποκριταί, καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων, 7 ὑποκριταί, καλῶς προεφήτευσε περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας, λέγων,

15:8 ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ, ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ· 8 Ἐγγίζει μοι ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν, καὶ τοῖς χείλεσί με τιμᾷ· ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ.
‘This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me. ‘This people draws near to me with their mouth and with their lips honours me, but their heart is far away from me.
15:9 μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων. 9 μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με, διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας, ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων.

15:12 Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν; 12 Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπον αὐτῷ, οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν;

15:13 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται. 13 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε, πᾶσα φυτεία, ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος, ἐκριζωθήσεται.

15:14 ἄφετε αὐτούς· τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί [τυφλῶν]· τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ, ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται. 14 ἄφετε αὐτούς· ὁδηγοί εἰσι τυφλοὶ τυφλῶν· τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ, ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται.
Leave them! they are blind guides [of the blind]. And when a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” Leave them! they are blind guides of the blind. And when a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

The Heart of Man

15:15 Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολήν [ταύτην]. 15 Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην.
Then in response to him, Peter said, “Explain [this] parable to us.” Then in response to him, Peter said, “Explain this parable to us.”
15:16 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε; 16 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
Then he said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also? Then Jesus said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also?
15:17 οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται; 17 οὔπω νοεῖτε, ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ, καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
Don’t you understand that everything that goes into the mouth proceeds into the belly, and is eliminated into a toilet? Even so you understand that everything that goes into the mouth proceeds into the belly, and is eliminated into a toilet?
15:18 τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. 18 τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται, κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
But the things that proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and those defile the man. But the things that proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and those defile the man.
15:19 ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, ψευδομαρτυρίαι, βλασφημίαι. 19 ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, ψευδομαρτυρίαι, βλασφημίαι.

15:20 ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον, τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. 20 ταῦτά ἐστι τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον· τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶ φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
These are the things that defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.” These are the things that defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
(Mark 7:24‑30)

15:21 Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος. 21 Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος.

15:22 καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραζεν λέγουσα, ἐλέησόν με, κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ, ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται. 22 καὶ ἰδού, γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραύγασεν αὐτῷ, λέγουσα, ἐλέησόν με, κύριε, υἱὲ Δαβίδ· ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται.
And next! After coming out, a Canaanite woman from those regions shouted out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely demon-possessed.” And next! 15:23 ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον.
καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες, ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν, ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν. 		23 ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον.
καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν, λέγοντες, ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν, ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν.
But he didn’t answer her a word. And after coming forward, his disciples kept asking him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting after us.” But he didn’t answer her a word. 15:25 ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγουσα, Κύριε, βοήθει μοι. 25 ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνει αὐτῷ, λέγουσα, Κύριε, βοήθει μοι.

15:26 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, οὐκ ἔστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις. 26 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, οὐκ ἔστι καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων, καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις.
And in response, he said, “It is not good to take the children’s food and throw it to the puppies.” And in response, he said, “It is not good to take the children’s food and throw it to the puppies.”
15:27 ἡ δὲ εἶπεν, ναὶ Κύριε, καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν. 27 ἡ δὲ εἶπε, ναί, Κύριε· καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν.

15:28 τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ, ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις, γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις.
καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης. 		28 τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ, ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις· γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις.
καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.
Then in response, Jesus said to her, “Oh woman, your faith is great; it shall happen to you as you want.” And her daughter was healed from that hour. Then in response, Jesus said to her, “Oh woman, your faith is great; it shall happen to you as you want.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Healing Crowds

15:29 Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ. 29 Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθε παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας· καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος, ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ.

15:30 καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἔχοντες μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς, τυφλούς, κυλλούς, κωφούς, καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς· 30 καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοί, ἔχοντες μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς, τυφλούς, κωφούς, κυλλούς, καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς, καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς·
And large crowds came to him, having with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others. And they laid them by his feet; and he healed them. Four Thousand Men Fed
(Mark 8:1‑10)

15:32 Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν, σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον, ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν· καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω, μήποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ. 32 Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπε, σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον, ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέρας τρεῖς προσμένουσί μοι, καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσι τί φάγωσι.

15:34 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε;

15:35 καὶ παραγγείλας τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν 35 καὶ ἐκέλευσε τοῖς ὄχλοις ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν·

15:36 ἔλαβεν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς, οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις. 36 καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας, εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασε, καὶ ἔδωκε τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τῷ ὄχλῳ.
