(Mark 2:1‑12; Luke 5:17‑26)
After getting into a boat, he crossed over and came to his own city. | After getting into a boat, he crossed over and came to his own city. |
9:2 καὶ
ἐπὶ
And next! they brought to him a paralytic lying on a cot. And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take courage, child; your sins are forgiven.” | And next! they brought to him a paralytic lying on a cot. And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take courage, child; your sins are forgiven.” |
And next! some of the scribes said to themselves, “This person blasphemes.” | And next! some of the scribes said to themselves, “This person blasphemes.” |
And after knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? | And after knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? |
For what is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? | For what is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? |
But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – then he said to the paralytic, “Arise, pick up your cot and go into your home.” | But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (then he said to the paralytic,) “Arise, pick up your cot and go into your home.” |
And after getting up, he went into his home. | And after getting up, he went into his home. |
But after seeing this, the crowds were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men. | But after seeing this, the crowds were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men. |
The Calling of Matthew

And while Jesus went on from there, he saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and he said to him, “Follow me!” And after getting up, he followed him. | And while Jesus went on from there, he saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and he said to him, “Follow me!” And after getting up, he followed him. |
Then it happened while he was reclining at the table in the house, suddenly! after coming, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining at the table with Jesus and his disciples. | Then it happened while he was reclining at the table in the house, suddenly! after coming, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining at the table with Jesus and his disciples. |
After seeing this, the Pharisees said to his disciples, “Why is your teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” | After seeing this, the Pharisees said to his disciples, “Why is your teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” |
But after hearing, he said, “The healthy have no need for a physician, but those who have sickness. | But after hearing, Jesus said to them, “The healthy have no need for a physician, but those who have sickness. |
But after going, learn what this is: ‘I want mercy, and not sacrifice,’[1] for I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.” | But after going, learn what this is: ‘I want mercy, and not sacrifice,’[1] for I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.” |
Why Don’t You Fast?
(Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39)
Then the disciples of Jōhn came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast [often], but your disciples don’t fast?” | Then the disciples of Jōhn came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?” |

And Jesus said to them, “The close friends of the bridegroom are not able to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, are they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. | And Jesus said to them, “The close friends of the bridegroom are not able to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, are they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. |
But no one applies a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for that which fills it will pull away from the garment, and a worse tear results. | But no one applies a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for that which fills it will pull away from the garment, and a worse tear results. |
Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” | Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” |
Jairus’ Daughter and Woman with Hemorrhage
(Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56)
While he was saying these things to them, suddenly! after coming, a ruler came did obeisance to him saying, “My daughter has just died; but after coming, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” | While he was saying these things to them, suddenly! after coming, a ruler came did obeisance to him saying, “My daughter has just died; but after coming, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” |
After getting up, Jesus, along with his disciples, followed him. | After getting up, Jesus, along with his disciples, followed him. |

But after turning and seeing her, Jesus said, “Daughter, be brave; your faith has healed you.” And from that hour the woman was healed. | But after turning and seeing her, Jesus said, “Daughter, be brave; your faith has healed you.” And from that hour the woman was healed. |
After coming into the official’s house and seeing the flute-players and the howling crowd, | After coming into the official’s house and seeing the flute-players and the howling crowd, |

But when the crowd was put out, after entering, he seized her hand, and the girl arose. | But when the crowd was put out, after entering, he seized her hand, and the girl arose. |
And this report went out into all that land. | And this report went out into all that land. |
Healing Two Blind Men
And while Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed [him], shouting and saying, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” | And while Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed [him], shouting and saying, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” |

After entering the house, the blind men came up to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They say to him, “Yes, Lord.” | After entering the house, the blind men came up to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They say to him, “Yes, Lord.” |
Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith, let it happen to you.” | Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith, let it happen to you.” |
9:30 καὶ
οἱ
And their eyes were opened. And Jesus warned them saying, “See that no one knows about this!” | And their eyes were opened. And Jesus warned them saying, “See that no one knows about this!” |
But after going out, they spread it in all that land. | But after going out, they spread it in all that land. |
Healing Mute Man
As they were going out, suddenly! they presented a mute, demon-possessed man to him. | As they were going out, suddenly! they presented a mute, demon-possessed man to him. |
9:33 καὶ
τοῦ
ὁ
While the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israēl.” | While the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israēl.” |
But the Pharisees were saying, “He is casting out the demons by the ruler of the demons.” | But the Pharisees were saying, “He is casting out the demons by the ruler of the demons.” |
The Compassion of Jesus
Jesus was going around all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. | Jesus was going around all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of diseasse and every kind of sickness among the people. |
After seeing the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were troubled and scattered like sheep without a shepherd. | After seeing the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were discouraged and scattered like sheep without a shepherd. |
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. | Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. |
Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” | Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” |
