Parable of Ten Virgins

And five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.[1] And five of them were prudent, and five were foolish.
Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all dozed and kept sleeping. Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all dozed and kept sleeping.
But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! the bridegroom! Come out to meet [him].’ But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! the bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him.’
Then the foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ Then the foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’
But the prudent answered, saying, ‘Not at all, there is not enough for us and you; go instead to the ones who sell and buy for yourselves.’ But the prudent answered, saying, ‘Not at all, there is not enough for us and you; go instead to the ones who sell and buy for yourselves.’
And while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was locked. And while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was locked.
Afterward the rest of the virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’ Afterward the rest of the virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’
But in response, he said, ‘Truly I say to you, I don’t know you.’ But in response, he said, ‘Truly I say to you, I don’t know you.’
Be vigilant therefore because you don’t know the day nor the hour. Be vigilant therefore because you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of man comes.

Parable of the Talents
(Luke 19:11‑27)

For it is just like a man going on a journey. He called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. For it is just like a man going on a journey. He called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents,[2] to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he immediately went on his journey. To one he gave five talents,[2] to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he immediately went on his journey.
After leaving, the one who had received the five talents traded with them, and gained another five. After leaving, the one who had received the five talents worked with them, and made another five talents.
Likewise the one who had received the two talents gained another two. And likewise the one who had received the two talents also gained himself another two.
But after the one who received the one talent went away, he dug the ground and hid his master’s money. But after the one who received the one talent went away, he dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.
Now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled an account with them. Now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled an account with them.
And after coming forward, the one who had received the five talents brought another five talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. Look! I have gained another five talents.’ And after coming forward, the one who had received the five talents brought another five talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. Look! I have gained another five talents besides them.’
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then his master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’
Also after coming forward, the one who received the two talents said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. Look! I have gained another two talents.’ Also after coming forward, the one who received the two talents said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. Look! I have gained another two talents besides them.’
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’
And after coming forward, the one also who had received the one talent said, ‘Master, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you didn’t sow and gathering where you didn’t scatter seed, And after coming forward, the one also who had received the one talent said, ‘Master, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you didn’t sow and gathering where you didn’t scatter seed,
And after being afraid and after going away, I hid your talent in the ground. Look! you have what is yours.’ And after being afraid and after going away, I hid your talent in the ground. Look! you have what is yours.’
But in response to him, his master said, ‘Oh wicked, lazy slave! you knew that I reap where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter seed. But in response to him, his master said, ‘Oh wicked, lazy slave! you knew that I reap where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter seed.
Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers; and when I came, I would have received mine with interest. Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers; and when I came, I would have received mine with interest.
Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’ Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’
For to everyone who has, will be given and will be in abundance; but of the one who doesn’t have, even what he does have shall be taken away. For to everyone who has, will be given and will be in abundance; but from the one who doesn’t have, even what he does have shall be taken away.
Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

Judgment of the Nations

All the nations will be gathered before him; and he will separate them from one another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; All the nations will be gathered before him; and he will separate them from one another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
and he will put the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. and he will put the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me; For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me;
naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’
25:37 τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ οἱ δίκαιοι λέγοντες, Κύριε, πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν, διψῶντα καὶ ἐποτίσαμεν; 37 τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ οἱ δίκαιοι, λέγοντες, Κύριε, πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα, καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν;
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you, or thirsty, and gave you something to drink? Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you, or thirsty, and gave you something to drink?
25:38 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ξένον καὶ συνηγάγομεν, γυμνὸν καὶ περιεβάλομεν; 38 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ξένον, καὶ συνηγάγομεν;
γυμνόν, καὶ περιεβάλομεν;
And when did we see you a stranger, and invite you, or naked, and clothe you? And when did we see you a stranger, and invite you, or naked, and clothe you?
25:39 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ἀσθενοῦντα ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε; 39 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ἀσθενῆ, ἐν φυλακῇ, καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε;
When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’ When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’
In response to them, the king will say, ‘Truly I say to you, just as long as you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it to me.’ In response to them, the king will say, ‘Truly I say to you, just as long as you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it to me.’
Then he will also say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; Then he will also say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
for I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink; for I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink;
I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
25:44 τότε ἀποκριθήσονται καὶ αὐτοὶ λέγοντες, Κύριε, πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα διψῶντα ξένον γυμνὸν ἀσθενῆ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐ διηκονήσαμέν σοι; 44 τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ καὶ αὐτοί, λέγοντες, Κύριε, πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα, διψῶντα, ξένον, γυμνόν, ἀσθενῆ, ἐν φυλακῇ, καὶ οὐ διηκονήσαμέν σοι;
Then they themselves also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t take care of you?’ Then they themselves also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t take care of you?’
Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’
These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

[1] The contrast is not between the wise and the stupid in regard to their intelligence; but in their care and thoughtfulness for the future. Thus "prudent" is preferred over "wise."
