Rank in the Kingdom
(Mark 9:33‑37; Luke 9:46‑48)

18:1 Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες, τίς ἄρα μείζων ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν; 1 Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ, λέγοντες, τίς ἄρα μείζων ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν;
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?” At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?”
and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of the heavens. and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of the heavens.
Whoever then humbles himself as this child, this one is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, this one is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens.

Temptations to Sin
(Mark 9:42‑48; Luke 17:1‑2)

but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble,[1] that it would be better for him that a millstone was hung around his neck and he was submerged in the depth of the sea. but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble,[1] that it would be better for him that a millstone was hung around his neck and he was submerged in the depth of the sea.
Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to the man through whom the stumbling block comes! Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to the man through whom the stumbling block comes!
If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire. If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.
If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life one-eyed, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the Gehenna of fire. If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life one-eyed, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the Gehenna of fire.
Watch out that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in the heavens continually see the face of my Father who is in the heavens. Watch out that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in the heavens continually see the face of my Father who is in the heavens.
[For the Son of Man has come to save what is lost.] For the Son of Man has come to save what is lost.

Ninety-nine Plus One
(Luke 15:3‑7)

18:12 Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ;
ἐὰν γένηταί τινι ἀνθρώπῳ ἑκατὸν πρόβατα καὶ πλανηθῇ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν, οὐχὶ ἀφήσει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη καὶ πορευθεὶς ζητεῖ τὸ πλανώμενον;
12 Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ;
ἐὰν γένηταί τινι ἀνθρώπῳ ἑκατὸν πρόβατα, καὶ πλανηθῇ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν· οὐχὶ ἀφεῖς τὰ ἐννενηκονταεννέα, ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη πορευθεὶς ζητεῖ τὸ πλανώμενον;
What do you think? If some man came to have 100 sheep, and one of them went astray, doesn’t he leave the 99 on the mountains and when he goes, he keeps searching for the one that is straying? What do you think? If some man came to have 100 sheep, and one of them went astray, doesn’t he leave the 99; and when he goes on the mountains, he keeps searching for the one that is straying?
If it happens that he finds it, truly I say to you, that he rejoices over it more than over the 99 which have not gone astray. If it happens that he finds it, truly I say to you, that he rejoices over it more than over the 99 which have not gone astray.
So it is not your Father’s will who is in the presence of the heavens that one of these little ones should perish. So it is not your Father’s will who is in the presence of the heavens that one of these little ones should perish.

Discipline and Prayer
(Luke 17:3)

“If your brother sins [against you], go, convict him between you and him alone; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. “If your brother sins against you, go and convict him between you and him alone; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
But if he doesn’t listen to you, take one or two more with you, in order that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be confirmed.[2] But if he doesn’t listen to you, take one or two more with you, in order that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be confirmed.[2]
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly;[3] and if he refuses to listen even to the assembly, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly;[3] and if he refuses to listen even to the assembly, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
Again [truly] I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about any matter that they may ask, it shall come to be for them by my Father who is in the heavens. Again [truly] I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about any matter that they may ask, it shall come to be for them by my Father who is in the heavens.
For where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst.” For where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst.”

Forgiveness Parable

18:21 Τότε προσελθὼν Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Κύριε, ποσάκις ἁμαρτήσει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἀφήσω αὐτῷ;
ἕως ἑπτάκις;
21 Τότε προσελθὼν αὐτῷ Πέτρος εἶπε, Κύριε, ποσάκις ἁμαρτήσει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀδελφός μου, καὶ ἀφήσω αὐτῷ;
ἕως ἑπτάκις;

For this reason the kingdom of the heavens may be compared to a man, a king, who wanted to settle an account with his slaves. For this reason the kingdom of the heavens may be compared to a man, a king, who wanted to settle an account with his slaves.
And when he began to settle up, one who owed him 10,000 talents[4] was brought to him. And when he began to settle up, one who owed him 10,000 talents[4] was brought to him.

And after being angry, his lord handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed. And after being angry, his lord handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed to him.
Thus my heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you doesn’t forgive his brother from your heart.” Thus my heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you doesn’t forgive his brother their transgressions from your heart.”

[4] 10,000 talents = 60,000,000 denarii; compare that with the mere 100 denarii the other person owed
