Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
(Mark 2:23‑28; Luke 6:1‑5)

At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck the heads of grain and to eat. At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck the heads of grain and to eat.
But after seeing this, the Pharisees said to him, “Look! your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath.” But after seeing this, the Pharisees said to him, “Look! your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath.”
12:3  δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησεν Δαυὶδ ὅτε ἐπείνασεν καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, 3  δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησε Δαβίδ, ὅτε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ;
But he said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he became hungry, and those with him, But he said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he became hungry, and those with him,
12:4 πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγον, οὐκ ἐξὸν ἦν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν οὐδὲ τοῖς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν μόνοις; 4 πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν, οὓς οὐκ ἐξὸν ἦν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν, οὐδὲ τοῖς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἱερεῦσι μόνοις;
how he entered the house of God, and they ate the presentation bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone?[1] how he entered the house of God, and they ate the presentation bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone?[1]
12:5  οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσιν καὶ ἀναίτιοί εἰσιν; 5  οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ, ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσι, καὶ ἀναίτιοί εἰσι;
Or haven’t you read in the Torah, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and are innocent?[2] Or haven’t you read in the Torah, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and are innocent?[2]
But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here. But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here.
But if you had known what this means, ‘I want mercy, and not a sacrifice,’[3] you would not have condemned the innocent. But if you had known what this means, ‘I want mercy, and not a sacrifice,’[3] you would not have condemned the innocent.

Man with a Withered Hand
(Mark 3:1‑6; Luke 6:6‑11)

After departing from there, he went into their synagogue. After departing from there, he went into their synagogue.
καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες, εἰ ἔξεστιν τοῖς σάββασιν θεραπεύειν;
10 καὶ ἰδού, ἄνθρωπος ἦν τὴν χεῖρα ἔχων ξηράν· καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτόν, λέγοντες, εἰ ἔξεστι τοῖς σάββασι θεραπεύειν;
And next! There was a man having a withered hand. And they asked him saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” in order that they might accuse him. And next! There was a man having a withered hand. And they asked him saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” in order that they might accuse him.
12 πόσῳ οὖν διαφέρει ἄνθρωπος προβάτου;
How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” He stretched it out, and it was restored, like the other. Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” He stretched it out, and it was restored, like the other.
But after going out, the Pharisees initiated a plot against him, as to how they might destroy him. But after going out, the Pharisees initiated a plot against him, as to how they might destroy him.

Chosen Servant

that the word might be fulfilled through Isaiah the prophet, saying, that the word might be fulfilled through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
“Look, my Servant whom I have chosen; my Beloved in whom my soul is well-pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, And he shall proclaim justice to the nations. “Look, my Servant whom I have chosen; my Beloved in whom my soul is well-pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, And he shall proclaim justice to the nations.
He will not quarrel, nor shout; nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. He will not quarrel, nor shout; nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
He will not break off a crushed reed, and he will not extinguish a smoldering wick, until he leads justice to victory. He will not break off a crushed reed, and he will not extinguish a smoldering wick, until he leads justice to victory.
And in his name, the Gentiles will be confident.”[4] And in his name, the Gentiles will be confident.”[4]

Jesus and Beelzebul
(Mark 3:20‑30; Luke 11:14‑23; 12:10)

Then a demon-possessed man, blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and he healed him, so that the mute man spoke and saw. Then a demon-possessed man, blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and he healed him, so that the mute man spoke and saw.
12:23 καὶ ἐξίσταντο πάντες οἱ ὄχλοι καὶ ἔλεγον, μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς Δαυίδ; 23 καὶ ἐξίσταντο πάντες οἱ ὄχλοι καὶ ἔλεγον, μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς Δαβίδ;
All the crowds were amazed, and kept saying, “This is not the Son of David, is he?” All the crowds were amazed, and kept saying, “This is not the Son of David, is he?”
But after hearing, the Pharisees said, “This man doesn’t cast out demons except by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.” But after hearing, the Pharisees said, “This man doesn’t cast out demons except by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.”
But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
12:29  πῶς δύναταί τις εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ἁρπάσαι, ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον δήσῃ τὸν ἰσχυρόν;
29  πῶς δύναταί τις εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ διαρπάσαι, ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον δήσῃ τὸν ἰσχυρόν;
Or how is anyone able to enter the strong man’s house and to seize his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. Or how is anyone able to enter the strong man’s house and to plunder his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.
The one who is not with me is against me; and he who doesn’t gather with me scatters. The one who is not with me is against me; and he who doesn’t gather with me scatters.
Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the one to come. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the one to come.

Tree and Its Fruits
(Luke 6:43‑45)

12:34 γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς δύνασθε ἀγαθὰ λαλεῖν πονηροὶ ὄντες ἐκ γὰρ τοῦ περισσεύματος τῆς καρδίας τὸ στόμα λαλεῖ. 34 γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς δύνασθε ἀγαθὰ λαλεῖν, πονηροὶ ὄντες;
Offspring of vipers, how are you able, being evil, to speak what is good? For the mouth speaks of the overflow of the heart. Offspring of vipers, how are you able, being evil, to speak what is good? For the mouth speaks of the overflow of the heart.
But I say to you that every careless word that men speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. But I say to you that every careless word that men speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Demand for a Sign
(Mark 8:11‑12; Luke 11:29‑32)

But in response to them, he said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jōnah the prophet; But in response to them, he said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jōnah the prophet;
for just as Jōnah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster,[5] so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. for just as Jōnah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster,[5] so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
The men of Nineveh will rise up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jōnah; and look! something greater than Jōnah is here. The men of Nineveh will rise up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jōnah; and look! something greater than Jōnah is here.
The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomōn; and look! something greater than Solomōn is here. The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomōn; and look! something greater than Solomōn is here.

Mother and Brothers of Jesus
(Mark 3:31‑35; Luke 8:19‑21)

Then it says, ‘I will return into my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then it says, ‘I will return into my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order.
Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and after entering, they live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Thus it will also be with this evil generation.” Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and after entering, they live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Thus it will also be with this evil generation.”
While he was still speaking to the crowds, look! his mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to him. While he was still speaking to the crowds, look! his mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to him.
[Someone said to him, “Look! your mother and your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to you.”] Someone said to him, “Look! your mother and your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to you.”
12:48  δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν τῷ λέγοντι αὐτῷ, τίς ἐστιν μήτηρ μου καὶ τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ἀδελφοί μου; 48  δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ εἰπόντι αὐτῷ, τίς ἐστιν μήτηρ μου;
καὶ τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ἀδελφοί μου;
But in response to the one who was telling him, he said, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” But in response to the one who was telling him, he said, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?”
And after stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Look! my mother and my brothers! And after stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Look! my mother and my brothers!
