God’s Promise concerning His Servant

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit on him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

1 Jakōb is my servant; I will lay hold of him; Israēl is my chosen; my soul has accepted him; I have given my spirit on him; he will bring forth judgment to the nations. 1 Jakōb is my servant; I will lay hold of him; Israēl is my chosen; my soul has accepted him; I have given my spirit on him; he will bring forth judgment to the nations.

2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

2 He won’t cry out or lift up his voice, nor will his voice be heard outside; 2 He won’t cry out or lift up his voice, nor will his voice be heard outside;

3 A bruised reed he shall not break, and the smoking flax he shall not quench: he shall bring forth judgment to truth.

3 He won’t break a bruised reed, and he won’t extinguish a smoking wick; but he will bring forth judgment for truth. 3 He won’t break a bruised reed, and he won’t extinguish a smoking wick; but he will bring forth judgment for truth.

4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his law.

4 He will flame up and not be overwhelmed until he has established judgment on the land, and nations will be confident in his name. 4 He will flame up and not be overwhelmed until he has established judgment on the land, and nations will be confident in his name.

5 Thus says God Yahweh, he who created the heavens, and stretched them out; he who spread forth the earth, and what comes out of it; he who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk in it.

5 Thus says the Lord God, who created the sky and established it, who solidified the ground and the things that are in it and who gave breath to the people on it and spirit to those who tread on it; 5 Thus says the Lord God, who created the sky and established it, who solidified the ground and the things that are in it and who gave breath to the people on it and spirit to those who tread on it;

6 I Yahweh have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

6 I, the Lord God, have called you in righteousness, and shall strengthen your hand strengthen you; I have given you as a covenant to a race, as a light to nations, 6 I, the Lord God, have called you in righteousness, and shall strengthen your hand strengthen you; I have given you as a covenant to a race, as a light to nations,

7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison house.

7

7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out from bonds those who are bound and from the prison house those who sit in darkness. 7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out from bonds those who are bound and from the prison house those who sit in darkness.

8 I am Yahweh: that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to carved images.

8 I am the Lord God; this is my name; I won’t give my glory to another, nor my excellences to the carved images. 8 I am the Lord God; this is my name; I won’t give my glory to another, nor my excellences to the carved images.

9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

9 As for the things that were from the beginning, look! they have come; also new things, which I myself will tell, and before they sprang forth, they were revealed to you. 9 As for the things that were from the beginning, look! they have come; also new things, which I myself will tell, and before they sprang forth, they were revealed to you.

10 Sing to Yahweh a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it; the isles, and the inhabitants of it.

10 Sing to the Lord a new song, the start of you! Glorify his name from the top of the land, you who go down to the sea and sail it, you islands and those who inhabit them. 10 Sing to the Lord a new song, the start of you! Glorify his name from the top of the land, you who go down to the sea and sail it, you islands and those who inhabit them.

11 Let the wilderness and the cities of it lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

11 Rejoice, Oh wilderness and its villages, farms and those who inhabit Kēdar.
Those who inhabit Petra will rejoice; they will shout from the tops of the mountains.
11 Rejoice, Oh wilderness and its villages, farms and those who inhabit Kēdar.
Those who inhabit Petra will rejoice; they will shout from the tops of the mountains.

12 Let them give glory to Yahweh, and declare his praise in the islands.

12 They will give glory to God; they will declare his moral excellences in the islands. 12 They will give glory to God; they will declare his moral excellences in the islands.

13 Yahweh shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yes, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

13 The Lord God of the armies will go out and crush the war; he will arouse zeal and shout against his enemies with strength. 13 The Lord God of the armies will go out and crush the war; he will arouse zeal and shout against his enemies with strength.

The Blindness of the People

14 I have long time held my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

14 ἐσιώπησα, μὴ καὶ ἀεὶ σιωπήσομαι καὶ ἀνέξομαι;
14 ἐσιώπησα, μὴ καὶ ἀεὶ σιωπήσομαι καὶ ἀνέξομαι;
14 I have been silent.
Shall I also always be silent and restrain?
I have endured like a woman in labour; I will astound and wither at once.
14 I have been silent.
Shall I also always be silent and restrain?
I have endured like a woman in labour; I will astound and wither at once.

15 I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.

15 And I will turn rivers into islands and dry up marshlands. 15 I will make mountains and hills desolate, and will dry up all their grass; And I will turn rivers into islands and dry up marshlands.

16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they didn’t know; I will lead them in paths that they haven’t known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do to them, and not forsake them.

16 And I will lead the blind by a road they didn’t know, and I will make them tread paths they haven’t known.
I will turn the darkness into light for them and the crooked places into a straight path.
I will do these things, and I won’t forsake them.
16 And I will lead the blind by a road they didn’t know, and I will make them tread paths they haven’t known.
I will turn the darkness into light for them and the crooked places into a straight path.
I will do these things, and I won’t forsake them.

17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in carved images, that say to the molten images, You are our gods.

17 But they turned away backward. Be ashamed with shame, you who trust in the carved images, who say to the cast metal images, “You are our gods.” 17 But they turned away backward. Be ashamed with shame, you who trust in the carved images, who say to the cast metal images, “You are our gods.”

18 Hear, you deaf; and look, you blind, that you may see.

18 Hear! you who are deaf, and you who are blind, look up to see! 18 Hear! you who are deaf, and you who are blind, look up to see!

19 Who is blind, but my servant? Or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he who is perfect, and blind as Yahweh’s servant?

19 καὶ τίς τυφλὸς ἀλλ’ οἱ παῖδές μου καὶ κωφοὶ ἀλλ’ οἱ κυριεύοντες αὐτῶν;
19 καὶ τίς τυφλός, ἀλλ’ οἱ παῖδές μου καὶ κωφοί, ἀλλ’ οἱ κυριεύοντες αὐτῶν;
19 And who is blind but my servants, and deaf but the ones who lord it over them?
Even God’s slaves have become blind.
19 And who is blind but my servants, and deaf but the ones who lord it over them?
Even God’s slaves have become blind.

20 Seeing many things, but you observe not; opening the ears, but he hears not.

20 You have often seen but not observed; your ears are open, but you haven’t heard. 20 You have often seen but not observed; your ears are open, but you haven’t heard.

21 Yahweh is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

21 The Lord God purposed in order to be justified and to magnify praise.
And I saw,
21 The Lord God purposed in order to be justified and to magnify praise.

22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivers; for a spoil, and none says, Restore.

22 and the people were plundered and spoiled, for the snare was in the secret rooms everywhere, as well as in houses together where they hid them; they have become plunder, and there was no one to rescue the prey and no one to say, “Restore!” 22 And I saw and the people were plundered and spoiled, for the snare was in the secret rooms everywhere, as well as in houses together where they hid them; they have become plunder, and there was no one to rescue the prey and no one to say, “Restore!”

23 Who among you will give ear to this? Who will listen and hear for the time to come?

23 τίς ἐν ὑμῖν, ὃς ἐνωτιεῖται ταῦτα, εἰσακούσεται εἰς τὰ ἐπερχόμενα; 23 τίς ἐν ὑμῖν, ὃς ἐνωτιεῖται ταῦτα;
23 Who is there among you who will give ear to these things, who will listen to the coming things? 23 Who is there among you who will give ear to these things, who will listen to the coming things?

24 Who gave Jacōb for a spoil, and Israēl to the robbers? Didn’t Yahweh, he against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient to his law.

24 τίς ἔδωκεν εἰς διαρπαγὴν Ἰακὼβ καὶ Ἰσραὴλ τοῖς προνομεύουσιν αὐτόν;
οὐχὶ θεός, ἡμάρτοσαν αὐτῷ καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλοντο ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ πορεύεσθαι οὐδὲ ἀκούειν τοῦ νόμου αὐτοῦ;
24 τίς ἔδωκεν εἰς διαρπαγὴν Ἰακὼβ καὶ Ἰσραὴλ τοῖς προνομεύουσιν αὐτόν;
οὐχὶ Θεός, ἡμάρτοσαν αὐτῷ, καὶ οὐκ ἠβούλοντο ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ πορεύεσθαι οὐδὲ ἀκούειν τοῦ νόμου αὐτοῦ;
24 Who gave Jakōb for spoil and Israēl to those who plunder him? Wasn’t it God, against whom they have sinned, and they wouldn’t walk in his ways nor hear his law? 24 Who gave Jakōb for spoil and Israēl to those who plunder him? Wasn’t it God, against whom they have sinned, and they wouldn’t walk in his ways nor hear his law?

25 Therefore he has poured on him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle; and it has set him on fire all around, yet he didn’t know; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

25 So he brought on them the anger of his wrath, and war overpowered them, as did those who were burning them all around.
And each of them, they didn’t know, nor did they put it to soul.
25 So he brought on them the anger of his wrath, and war overpowered them, as did those who were burning them all around.
And each of them, they didn’t know, nor did they put it to soul.
