Chapter 8
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |
---|
1 At that time, says Yahweh, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves.
1 At that time, says the Lord, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Juda, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves; | 1 At that time, says the Lord, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Juda, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves; |
2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the objects of the sky, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung on the face of the earth.
2 and they shall spread them out to the sun, and the moon, and to all the stars, and to all the objects of the sky, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and to which they have held, and which they have worshipped; they shall not be mourned for, neither shall they be buried; but they shall be for an example on the face of the earth, | 2 and they shall spread them out to the sun, and the moon, and to all the stars, and to all the objects of the sky, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and to which they have held, and which they have worshipped; they shall not be mourned for, neither shall they be buried; but they shall be for an example on the face of the earth, |
3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of those who remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places to which I have driven them, says Yahweh of armies.
3 because they chose death rather than life, even to all the remnant that are left of that family, in every place to which I shall drive them out. | 3 because they chose death rather than life, even to all the remnant that are left of that family, in every place to which I shall drive them out. |
4 Moreover you shall say to them, Thus says Yahweh; Shall they fall, and not arise? he shall turn away, and not return?

4 For thus says the Lord, Shall not he who falls arise? Or he who turns away, he shall not turn back again? | 4 For thus says the Lord, Shall not he who falls arise? Or he who turns away, he shall not turn back again? |
5 Why then does this people of Jerusalem slide back by a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
5 Why has this my people turned away with a shameless revolting, and strengthened themselves in their willfullness, and refused to return? | 5 Why has this my people turned away with a shameless revolting, and strengthened themselves in their willfullness, and refused to return? |
6 I listened and heard, but they spoke not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? Everyone turned to his course, as the horse rushes into the battle.

6 Please listen and hear: will they not speak thus, There is no man who repents of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? The runner has failed from his course, as a tired horse in his neighing. | 6 Please listen and hear: will they not speak thus, There is no man who repents of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? The runner has failed from his course, as a tired horse in his neighing. |
7 Yes, the stork in the heaven knows her appointed times; and the turtledove and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people don’t know the judgment of Yahweh.

8 How do you say, We are wise, and the law of Yahweh is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

8 How will you say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? In vain have the scribes used a false pen. | 8 How will you say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? In vain have the scribes used a false pen. |
9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of Yahweh; and what wisdom is in them?
9 The wise men are ashamed, and alarmed, and taken; because they have rejected the word of the Lord; what wisdom is there in them? | 9 The wise men are ashamed, and alarmed, and taken; because they have rejected the word of the Lord; what wisdom is there in them? |
10 Therefore will I give their wives to others, and their fields to those who shall inherit them; for everyone from the least even to the great is given to covetousness, from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
10 Therefore will I give their wives to others, and their fields to new inheritors; and they shall gather their fruits, says the Lord. | 10 Therefore will I give their wives to others, and their fields to new inheritors; and they shall gather their fruits, says the Lord. |
11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
11 N/A | 11 N/A |
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush; therefore shall they fall among those who fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says Yahweh.
11 N/A | 11 N/A |
13 I will surely consume them, says Yahweh: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
13 There are no grapes on the vines, and there are no figs on the fig-trees, and the leaves have fallen off. | 13 There are no grapes on the vines, and there are no figs on the fig-trees, and the leaves have fallen off. |
14 Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let’s enter into the defenced cities, and let’s be silent there; for Yahweh our Elohim has put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Yahweh.

Assemble yourselves, and let’s enter into the strong cities, and let’s be cast out there; for God has cast us out, and made us drink water of gall, because we have sinned before him. | 14 Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let’s enter into the strong cities, and let’s be cast out there; for God has cast us out, and made us drink water of gall, because we have sinned before him. |
15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
15 We assembled for peace, but there was no prosperity; for a time of healing, but behold anxiety. | 15 We assembled for peace, but there was no prosperity; for a time of healing, but behold anxiety. |
16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those who dwell in it.
16 We shall hear the neighing of his swift horses out of Dan: the whole land quaked at the sound of the neighing of his horses; and he shall come, and devour the land and the fullness of it; the city, and those who dwell in it. | 16 We shall hear the neighing of his swift horses out of Dan: the whole land quaked at the sound of the neighing of his horses; and he shall come, and devour the land and the fullness of it; the city, and those who dwell in it. |
17 For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which won’t be charmed, and they shall bite you, says Yahweh.
17 For, behold, I send forth against you deadly serpents, which cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you | 17 For, behold, I send forth against you deadly serpents, which cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you |
18 When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.
18 mortally with the pain of your distressed heart. | 18 mortally with the pain of your distressed heart. |
19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of those who dwell in a far country: Is not Yahweh in Zion? Isn’t her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images, and with strange vanities?

20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment has taken hold on me.

22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
