Joshua

1 And it happened, when all the kings who were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon (the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite), heard of it;

2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israēl, with one accord.

4 they acted deceptively, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. They put old sacks on their donkeys along with old wineskins torn and patched up.

4 καὶ ἐποίησαν καὶ γε αὐτοὶ μετὰ πανουργίας καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπεσιτίσαντο καὶ ἡτοιμάσαντο καὶ λαβόντες σάκκους παλαιοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ὄνων αὐτῶν καὶ ἀσκοὺς οἴνου παλαιοὺς καὶ κατερρωγότας ἀποδεδεμένους,	4 καὶ ἐποίησαν καί γε αὐτοὶ μετὰ πανουργίας καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπεσιτίσαντο καὶ ἡτοιμάσαντο καὶ λαβόντες σάκκους παλαιοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ὄνων αὐτῶν καὶ ἀσκοὺς οἴνου παλαιοὺς καὶ κατερρωγότας ἀποδεδεμένους,

5 They wore old and patched sandals on their feet, and dressed in worn clothes. All the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 And they went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israēl, “We have come from a far country; now therefore make you a treaty with us.”

9 And they said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your Elohim; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

11 Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take food with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; therefore now make a treaty with us.” ’

12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy;

13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are torn; and these our clothes and our shoes have become worn out because of the very long journey.”

14 And the men took of their food, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant^[1] with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.

16 And it happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 And the sons of Israēl journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

18 And the sons of Israēl didn’t strike them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh Elohim of Israēl. And all the congregation murmured against the leaders.

19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh Elohim of Israēl; now therefore we may not touch them.

20 We will do this to them: we will even let them live, lest wrath comes on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

21 And the leaders said to them, “Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water to all the congregation; just as the leaders had promised them.”

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you’; when you dwell among us?

22 καὶ συνεκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς διὰ τί παρελογίσασθέ με λέγοντες Μακρὰν ἀπὸ σου ἐσμεν σφόδρα; ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐγχώριοί ἐστε τῶν κατοικούντων ἐν ἡμῖν·	22 καὶ συνεκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς· διατί παρελογίσασθέ με λέγοντες, μακρὰν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἔσμεν σφόδρα, ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐγχώριοί ἐστε τῶν κατοικούντων ἐν ἡμῖν;

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, “Because it was certainly told your servants, how that Yahweh your Elohim commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were very afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

26 And so he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the sons of Israēl, so that they didn’t kill them.

27 And on that day, Joshua made them wood cutters and water carriers for the congregation, and for the altar of Yahweh, even to this day, in the place which he should choose.

27 καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ξυλοκόπους καὶ ὑδροφόρους πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ τοῦ θεοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐγένοντο οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαβαὼν ξυλοκόποι καὶ ὑδροφόροι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὃν ἐὰν ἐκλέξηται κύριος.	27 καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ξυλοκόπους καὶ ὑδροφόρους πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐγένοντο οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαβαὼν ξυλοκόποι καὶ ὑδροφόροι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας, καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὃν ἄν ἐκλέξηται Κύριος.
