Chapter 8

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Conquest of Ai

1 And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;

1 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Don’t fear, nor be afraid; take all the men, the warriors, with you, and arise, go up to Gai. Look! into your hands, I have given the king of Gai and his land. 1 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Don’t fear, nor be afraid; take all the men, the warriors, with you, and arise, go up to Gai. Look! into your hands, I have given the king of Gai and his land.

2 And you shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king; only the spoil of it, and the cattle of it, you shall take for a prey to yourselves. Place yourselves in an ambush for the city behind it.”

2 And you shall do to Gai, as you did to Jerichō and its king; and you shall plunder for yourself the plunder of its cattle. Now set for yourself an ambush against the city, from behind.” 2 And you shall do to Gai, as you did to Jerichō and its king; and you shall plunder for yourself the plunder of its cattle. Now set for yourself an ambush against the city, from behind.”

3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose out 30,000 mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

3 And Jēsous and all the military people rose to go up to Gai; and Jēsous selected 30,000 menm mighty in strength, and he sent them away at night. 3 And Jēsous and all the warrior people rose to go up to Gai; and Jēsous selected 30,000 menm mighty in strength, and he sent them away at night.

4 And he commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city; don’t go very far from the city, but be all ready;

4 And he commanded them, saying, “Prepare to ambush behind the city; don’t be far from the city, and all of you shall be ready. 4 And he commanded them, saying, “Prepare to ambush behind the city; don’t be far from the city, and all of you shall be ready.

5 And I, and all the people who are with me, will approach to the city; and it will happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

5 And I and all those with me will approach the city; and it shall be when the inhabitants of Gai shall come out to meet us, as also before, that we will flee from before them. 5 And I and all those with me will approach the city; and it shall be when the inhabitants of Gai shall come out to meet us, as also before, that we will flee from before them.

6 (for they will come out after us) until we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, as at the first; therefore we will flee before them.’

6 And when they come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, ‛These men are fleeing from before us, as also previously.’ 6 And when they come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, ‛These men are fleeing from before us, as also previously.’

7 Then you shall rise up from the ambush, and seize the city; for Yahweh your Elohim will deliver it into your hand.

7 And you shall rise up out of the ambush and go into the city. 7 And you shall rise up out of the ambush and go into the city.

8 And it shall be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do it according to the command of Yahweh. See, I have commanded you.”

8 You shall do according to this word, look! I have commanded you.” 8 You shall do according to this word, look! I have commanded you.”

9 Joshua therefore sent them forth; and they went to lie in ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

9 And Jēsous sent them, and they went to the ambush; and they lay between Baithēl and Gai, and from the sea of Gai. 9 And Jēsous sent them, and they went to the ambush; and they lay between Baithēl and Gai, and from the sea of Gai.

10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israēl, before the people to Ai.

10 And Jēsous rose up early in the morning, and mobililzed the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Gai. 10 And Jēsous rose up early in the morning, and mobililzed the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Gai.

11 And all the people, even the people of war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and camped on the north side of Ai; now there was a valley between them and Ai.

11 And all the military people went up with him; and as they went, they came opposite the city from the east. 11 And all the military people went up with him; and as they went, they came opposite the city from the east.

12 And he took about 5000 men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

12 And the ambush of the city was from the sea. 12 And the ambush of the city was from the sea.

13 And when they had set the people, even all the army that was on the north of the city, and their ambush men on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 And it happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israēl to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he didn’t know that there were ambush men ready against him behind the city.

14 And it happened when the king of Gai saw, he hurried and went out to meet them directly to the battle, he and all the people who were with him; and he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 14 And it happened when the king of Gai saw, he hurried and went out to meet them directly to the battle, he and all the people who were with him; and he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

15 And Joshua and all Israēl made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

15 And Jēsous and Israēl saw and retreated from before them. 15 And Jēsous and Israēl saw and retreated from before them.

16 And all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue after them; and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

16 And they pursued after the sons of Israēl, and they went away from the city. 16 And they pursued after the sons of Israēl, and they went away from the city.

17 And there wasn’t a man left in Ai or Bethel, who didn’t go out after Israēl; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israēl.

17 There was no one left in Gai who didn’t pursue after Israēl; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israēl. 17 There was no one left in Gai who didn’t pursue after Israēl; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israēl.

18 And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai; for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

18 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Stretch out your hand with the spear that is in your hand toward the city, – for I have delivered it into your hands – and the ambush shall rise up quickly out of their place.” And Jēsous stretched out his hand, the spear, against the city, 18 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Stretch out your hand with the spear that is in your hand toward the city; for I have delivered it into your hands; and the ambush shall rise up quickly out of their place.” And Jēsous stretched out his hand, the spear, against the city,

19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it, and hurried and set the city on fire.

19 And the ambush rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and captured it; and they hurried and burned the city with fire. 19 And the ambush rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and captured it; and they hurried and burned the city with fire.

20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to the sky, and they had no power to flee this way or that way; and the people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

20 And when the inhabitants of Gai looked around behind them, and they kept seeing smoke going up out of the city to the sky, and they no longer had anywhere to flee this way or that way. 20 And when the inhabitants of Gai looked around behind them, and they kept seeing smoke going up out of the city to the sky, and they no longer had anywhere to flee this way or that way.

21 And when Joshua and all Israēl saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed the men of Ai.

21 And Jēsous and all Israēl saw that the ambush took the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to the sky; and they turned and struck the men of Gai. 21 And Jēsous and all Israēl saw that the ambush took the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to the sky; and they turned and struck the men of Gai.

22 And the others came out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israēl, some on this side, and some on that side; and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

22 And these came out of the city to meet them; and they were between the camp, some on this side, and some on that; and they struck until there wasn’t left of them one who survived and escaped. 22 And these came out of the city to meet them; and they were between the camp, some on this side, and some on that; and they struck until there wasn’t left of them one who survived and escaped.

23 And they took the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

23 And they captured the king of Gai alive, and brought him to Jēsous. 23 And they captured the king of Gai alive, and brought him to Jēsous.

24 And it happened, when Israēl had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israēlites returned to Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

24 And when the sons of Israēl stopped killing all who were in Gai, and in the plains, and on the mountain on the downward slope, where they pursued them even to the end, then Jēsous returned to Gai, and struck it with the edge of the sword. 24 And when the sons of Israēl stopped killing all who were in Gai, and in the plains, and on the mountain on the downward slope, where they pursued them even to the end, then Jēsous returned to Gai, and struck it with the edge of the sword.

25 And so it was, that all who fell that day, both of men and women, were 12,000, even all the men of Ai.

25 And it came to be that they who fell in that day, from men to women, were 12,000; all the inhabitants of Gai. 25 And it came to be that they who fell in that day, from men to women, were 12,000; all the inhabitants of Gai.

26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, with which he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 Israēl took for a prey to themselves only the cattle and the spoil of that city, according to the word of Yahweh which he commanded Joshua.

27 Except for the cattle and the spoils that were in the city, all things that the sons of Israēl plundered according to the ordinance of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Jēsous. 27 Except for the cattle and the spoils that were in the city, all things that the sons of Israēl plundered according to the ordinance of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Jēsous.

28 And Joshua burned Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation to this day.

28 And Jēsous burned the city with fire; he made it an uninhabited mound forever, to this day. 28 And Jēsous burned the city with fire; he made it an uninhabited mound forever, to this day.

29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until evening; and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise on it a great heap of stones, that remains to this day.

29 And he hanged the king of Gai on a forked tree; and he remained on the tree until evening; and when the sun set, Jēsous ordered, and they took his body down from the tree, and threw it into the hole, and they set over him a pile of stones until this day. 29 And he hanged the king of Gai on a forked tree; and he remained on the tree until evening; and when the sun set, Jēsous ordered, and they took his body down from the tree, and threw it into the hole, and they set over him a pile of stones until this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar to Yahweh Elohim of Israēl in mount Ebal,

30 Then Jēsous built an altar to the Lord God of Israēl on mount Gaibal, 30 Then Jēsous built an altar to the Lord God of Israēl on mount Gaibal,

31 as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded the sons of Israēl, as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses: “an altar of whole stones, over which no man had lifted up any iron.” Deut 27:5-6 And they offered on it burnt offerings to Yahweh, and sacrificed peace offerings.

31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the sons of Israēl, as it was written in the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, on which no iron had been applied; and there he offered whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, and a peace offering. 31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the sons of Israēl, as it was written in the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, on which no iron had been applied; and there he offered whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, and a peace offering.

32 And he wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the sons of Israēl.

32 And Jēsous wrote deuteronomy on the stones, the law of Moses, in the presence of the sons of Israēl. 32 And Jēsous wrote deuteronomy on the stones, the law of Moses, in the presence of the sons of Israēl.

33 And all Israēl, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, as well the stranger, as he who was born among them; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israēl.

33 And all Israēl, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, were passing on one side and on the other side of the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; both the resident alien and the native-born. Half of them were near mount Gaibal, as Moses the representative of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people. 33 And all Israēl, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, were passing on one side and on the other side of the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; both the immigrant and the native-born. Half of them were near mount Gaibal, as Moses the representative of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people.

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the scroll of the law.

34 And all Israēl, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, were passing on one side and on the other side of the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; both the immigrant and the native-born. Half of them were near mount Gaibal, as Moses the representative of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people.
34 And after these things Jēsous therefore read all the words of this law, the blessings and the curses, according to all things that had been written in the law of Moses. 34 And after these things Jēsous therefore read all the words of this law, the blessings and the curses, according to all things that had been written in the law of Moses.

35 There wasn’t a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua didn’t read before all the congregation of Israēl, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers who were conversant among them.

35 There wasn’t a word of all that Moses commanded Jēsous, which Jēsous did not read in the ears of all the assembly of the sons of Israēl, to the men and to the women and to the children and to the immigrant, to the ones attached to Israēl. 35 There wasn’t a word of all that Moses commanded Jēsous, which Jēsous did not read in the ears of all the assembly of the sons of Israēl, to the men and to the women and to the children and to the immigrant, to the ones attached to Israēl.
