Arad Conquered

1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israēl came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israēl, and took some of them prisoners.

1 And Arad the king of Chananis who lived by the wilderness, heard that Israēl came by the way of Atharin; and he made war on Israēl, and carried off a group of captives of them. 1 And Arad the king of Chananis who lived by the wilderness, heard that Israēl came by the way of Atharein; and he made war on Israēl, and carried off a group of captives of them.

2 And Israēl vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

2 And Israēl vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, “If you deliver this people in subjection, I will curse it and its cities.” 2 And Israēl vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, “If you deliver this people in subjection, I will curse it and its cities.”

3 And Yahweh listened to the voice of Israēl, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and he called the name of the place Hormah.

3

3 And the Lord listened to the voice of Israēl, and delivered Chananis as his subjected one; and Israēl cursed him and his cities, and they called the name of that place Anathema. 3 And the Lord listened to the voice of Israēl, and delivered Chananis as his subjected one; and Israēl cursed him and his cities, and they called the name of that place Anathema.

4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people was very discouraged because of the way.

4 And after they departed from Or the mountain by the way toward the Red Sea, they went around the land of Edōm; and the people became discouraged on the way. 4 And after they departed from Or the mountain by the way toward the Red Sea, they went around the land of Edōm; and the people became discouraged on the way.

5 And the people spoke against Elohim, and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul hates this light bread.”

5 καὶ κατελάλει λαὸς πρὸς τὸν θεὸν καὶ κατὰ Μωυσῇ λέγοντες Ἵνα τί ἐξήγαγες ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἀποκτεῖναι ἡμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ;
5 καὶ κατελάλει λαὸς πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ κατὰ Μωυσῆ λέγοντες· ἱνατί τοῦτο;
ἐξήγαγες ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, ἀποκτεῖναι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ;
5 And the people kept maligning God and against Moses, saying, “Why have you brought us out of Aigypt to kill us in the wilderness? For there is no bread or water. And our soul is wearied by the light bread.” 5 And the people kept maligning God and against Moses, saying, “Why is this? Have you brought us out of Aigypt to kill in the wilderness? For there is no bread or water. And our soul is wearied by this light bread.”

The Bronze Serpent

6 And Yahweh sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israēl died.

6 And the Lord sent among the people deadly snakes, and they were biting the people, and many people of the sons of Israēl died. 6 And the Lord sent among the people deadly snakes, and they were biting the people, and many people of the sons of Israēl died.

7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against Yahweh, and against you; pray to Yahweh, that he may take away the serpents from us.” And Moses prayed for the people.

7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have maligned against the Lord and against you; pray therefore to the Lord, and let him take away the snake from us.” And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have maligned against the Lord and against you; pray therefore to the Lord, and let him take away the snake from us.” And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people.

8 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks on it, shall live.”

8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake for yourself, and put it on a sign; and it shall be that if a snake bites a man, everyone who is bitten when he looks at it shall live.” 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake for yourself, and put it on a sign; and it shall be that if a snake bites a man, everyone who is bitten when he looks at it shall live.”

9 And Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it on a pole, and it happened, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of bronze, he lived.

9 And Moses made a snake of copper-alloy, and put it on a sign, and it happened that whenever a snake bit a man, and he looked at the copper-alloy snake, he lived. 9 And Moses made a snake of copper-alloy, and put it on a sign, and it happened that whenever a snake bit a man, and he looked at the copper-alloy snake, he lived.

10 And the sons of Israēl set forward, and camped in Oboth.

10 And the sons of Israēl departed, and encamped at Ōbōth. 10 And the sons of Israēl departed, and encamped at Ōbōth.

11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and camped at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Mōab, toward the sunrising.

11 And after they departed from Ōbōth, they encamped at Achelgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Mōab, toward the sunrise. 11 And after they departed from Ōbōth, they encamped at Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Mōab, toward the sunrise.

12 From from there they removed, and camped in the valley of Zared.

12 And from there they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zaret. 12 And from there they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zared.

13 From from there they removed, and camped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the coasts of the Amorites; for Arnon is the border of Mōab, between Mōab and the Amorites.

13 And they departed from there and encamped on the other side of Arnōn in the wilderness, that extends from the borders of the Amorites; for Arnōn is the borders of Mōab, between Mōab and between the Amorites. 13 And they departed from there and encamped on the other side of Arnōn in the wilderness, that extends from the borders of the Amorites; for Arnōn is the borders of Mōab, between Mōab and between the Amorites.

14 Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Yahweh, “What he did in the Red Sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

14 Therefore it says in a book, “A war of the Lord has set on fire Zōob and the brooks of Arnōn. 14 Therefore it says in a book, “A war of the Lord has set on fire Zōob and the brooks of Arnōn.

15 And at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies on the border of Mōab.”

15 And he has appointed the brooks to settle Ēr; and it lies near to the borders of Mōab.” 15 And he has appointed the brooks to settle Ēr; and it lies near to the borders of Mōab.”

16 And from there they went to Beer; that is the well of which Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

16 And from there, the well; this is the well which the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.” 16 And from there, the well; this is the well which the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.”

17 Then Israēl sang this song, “Spring up, Oh well; sing to it.”

17 Then Israēl sang this song at the well, “Begin it. 17 Then Israēl sang this song at the well, “Begin it.

18 The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah.

18 Oh Well! Leaders dug it, kings of nations hewed it out in their kingdom, during their controlling,” and from the well to Manthanain, 18 Oh Well! Leaders dug it, kings of nations hewed it out in their kingdom, during their controlling,” and from the well to Manthanaein,

19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

19

19 and from Manthanain to Naaliēl, and from Naaliēl to Bamōth, 19 and from Manthanaein to Naaliēl, and from Naaliēl to Bamoth, and from Bamōth to Janēn, which is in the plain of Mōab from the top of the hewed rock that looks down toward the wilderness.

20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Mōab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward Jeshimon.

20 And from Bamoth to a valley, which is in the plain of Mōab, from the top of the hewn stone that looks down toward the wilderness. 20 And Moses sent ambassadors to Sēōn king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying,

Two Victories

21 And Israēl sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

21 And Moses sent ambassadors to Sēōn king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying, 21 We will pass through your land, we will go by the road; we won’t turn aside into the field or into the vineyard.

22 “Let me pass through your land; we won’t turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we won’t drink of the waters of the well; but we will go along by the main road,[1] until we are past your borders.”

22 “We will pass through your land, we will go by the road; we won’t turn aside into the field or into the vineyard. We won’t drink water out of your well; we will go by the royal road, until we have past your borders.” 22 “We won’t drink water out of your well; we will go by the royal road, until we have past your borders.”

23 And Sihon would not permit Israēl to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israēl into the wilderness; and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israēl.

23 And Sēōn didn’t grant Israēl to pass through his borders, and Sēōn gathered all his people, and went out to array against Israēl into the wilderness; and he came to Israēl, and deployed troops against Israēl. 23 And Sēōn didn’t grant Israēl to pass through his borders, and Sēōn gathered all his people, and went out to array against Israēl into the wilderness; and he came to Israēl, and deployed troops against Israēl.

24 And Israēl smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon to Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

24 And Israēl struck him with the slaughter of the dagger, and conquered his land, from Arnōn to Jabok, as far as Amman’s sons, for Jazēr is the borders of Amman’s sons. 24 And Israēl struck him with the slaughter of the dagger, and conquered his land, from Arnōn to Jabok, as far as Amman’s sons, for Jazēr is the borders of Amman’s sons.

25 And Israēl took all these cities; and Israēl dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.

25 And Israēl took all these cities, and Israēl dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Esebōn, and in all cities connected to it. 25 And Israēl took all these cities, and Israēl dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Esebōn, and in all cities connected to it.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Mōab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to Arnon.

26 For Esebōn is the city of Sēōn king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Mōab, and they took all his land, from Aroēr to Arnōn. 26 For Esebōn is the city of Sēōn king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Mōab, and they took all his land, from Aroēr to Arnōn.

27 Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, “Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared.

27 Therefore those who speak riddles will say, “Come to Esebōn, in order that the city of Sēōn may be built and prepared. 27 Therefore those who speak riddles will say, “Come to Esebōn, in order that the city of Sēōn may be built and prepared.

28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it has consumed Ar of Mōab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

28 Because a fire has gone out from Esebōn, a flame out of the city of Sēōn, and it consumed as far as Mōab, and swallowed up the pillars of Arnōn. 28 Because a fire has gone out from Esebōn, a flame out of the city of Sēōn, and it consumed as far as Mōab, and swallowed up the pillars of Arnōn.

29 Woe to you, Mōab! you are undone, Oh people of Chemosh; he has given his sons who escaped, and his daughters, into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.

29 Woe to you, Mōab, you were ruined. Oh people of Chamōs; their sons were given over to escape, and their daughters are captives to Sēōn king of the Amorites. 29 Woe to you, Mōab, you were ruined. Oh people of Chamōs; their sons were given over to escape, and their daughters are captives to Sēōn king of the Amorites.

30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even to Dibon, and we have laid them waste even to Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.”

30 And their descendants shall perish from Esebōn to Daibōn; and the women have further ignited a fire against Mōab.” 30 And their descendants shall perish from Esebōn to Daibōn; and the women have further ignited a fire against Mōab.”

31 Thus Israēl dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

31 And Israēl dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites. 31 And Israēl dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites.

34 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Don’t be afraid of him; for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.”

And you shall do to him as you did to Sēōn king of the Amorites who dwelt in Esebōn.”

35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left to him alive; and they possessed his land.

35 And he struck him and his sons, and all his people, until he left none of his to be taken alive; and they inherited their land. 35 And he struck him and his sons, and all his people, until he left none of his to be taken alive; and they inherited their land.
