1 And the sons of Israēl set forward, and camped in the plains of Mōab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

3 And Mōab was very afraid of the people, because they were many; and Mōab was distressed because of the sons of Israēl.

4 And Mōab said to the eldership of Madiam, “Now this assembly will lick up all that are around us, as a calf would lick up the green herbs of the field;” –and Balak son of Sepphōr was king of Mōab at that time. | 4 And Mōab said to the eldership of Madiam, “Now this assembly will lick up all that are around us, as a calf would lick up the green herbs of the field;” –and Balak son of Sepphōr was king of Mōab at that time. |
5 He sent messengers therefore to Balaam the son of Beōr to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.
5 And he sent ambassadors to Balaam the son of Beōr, to Phathoura, which is on the river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, “Look! a people has come out of Aigypt, and look it has covered the face of the earth, and it is lying in wait next to me. | 5 And he sent ambassadors to Balaam the son of Beōr, to Phathoura, which is on the river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, “Look! a people has come out of Aigypt, and look it has covered the face of the earth, and it is lying in wait next to me. |
6 Come now therefore, please, curse this people for me; for they are too mighty for me; perhaps I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
6 And now come, curse this people for me, because it is stronger than we. If we are able to strike some of them, and I will throw them out of the land; because I know that whomever you bless, they are blessed, and whomever you curse, they are cursed.” | 6 And now come, curse this people for me, because it is stronger than we. If we are able to strike some of them, and I will throw them out of the land; because I know that whomever you bless, they are blessed, and whomever you curse, they are cursed.” |
7 And the elders of Mōab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.
7 And the eldership of Mōab went, and the eldership of Madiam, and their divining instruments were in their hands; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak. | 7 And the eldership of Mōab went, and the eldership of Madiam, and their divining instruments were in their hands; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak. |
8 And he said to them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Yahweh shall speak to me.” And the princes of Mōab abode with Balaam.
8 And he said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will answer you the things which the Lord shall say to me;” and the leaders of Mōab stayed with Balaam. | 8 And he said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will answer you the things which the Lord shall say to me;” and the leaders of Mōab stayed with Balaam. |
9 And Elohim came to Balaam, and said, “Who are these men with you?”
9 And God came to Balaam, and said to him, “What are these men with you?” | 9 And God came to Balaam, and said to him, “What are these men with you?” |
10 And Balaam said to Elohim, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Mōab, has sent to me, saying,
10 And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Sepphōr, king of Mōab, sent them to me, saying, | 10 And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Sepphōr, king of Mōab, sent them to me, saying, |
11 ‘Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, who covers the face of the earth; come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.’ ”
11 ‛ Look! a people has come out of Aigypt and look has covered the face of the land, and it lies in wait next to me; and now come, curse it for me, if indeed I shall be able to strike it, and throw it out of the land. ’ ” | 11 ‛ Look! a people has come out of Aigypt and look has covered the face of the land, and it lies in wait next to me; and now come, curse it for me, if indeed I shall be able to strike it, and throw it out of the land. ’ ” |
12 And Elohim said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people; for they are blessed.”
12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them, nor you shall curse the people; for it is blessed.” | 12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them, nor you shall curse the people; for it is blessed.” |
13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, “Go into your land; for Yahweh refuses to allow me to go with you.”
13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the leaders of Balak, “Run away to your lord; God doesn’t permit me to go with you.” | 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the leaders of Balak, “Run away to your lord; God doesn’t permit me to go with you.” |
14 And the princes of Mōab rose up, and they went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
14 And the leaders of Mōab arose, and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam doesn’t want to go with us.” | 14 And the leaders of Mōab arose, and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam doesn’t want to go with us.” |
15 And Balak sent once again more princes, even more honourable than the others.
15 And Balak repeated still to send more leaders and more distinguished than they. | 15 And Balak repeated still to send more leaders and more distinguished than they. |
16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me;
16 And they came to Balaam, and they say to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Sepphōr; ‘I beg you, don’t delay to come to me. | 16 And they came to Balaam, and they say to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Sepphōr; ‘I beg you, don’t delay to come to me. |
17 for I will promote you to very great honour, and I will do whatever you say to me; please come therefore, and curse this people for me.’ ”
17 For I will honour you honourably, and whatever you say, I will do for you; come then, curse this people for me.’ ” | 17 For I will honour you honourably, and whatever you say, I will do for you; come then, curse this people for me.’ ” |
18 And Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Yahweh my Elohim, to do less or more.
18 And Balaam answered and said to the leaders of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I shall not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord God to do it, little or great in my mind. | 18 And Balaam answered and said to the leaders of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I shall not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord God to do it, little or great in my mind. |
19 Now therefore, please, stay here this night also, so that I may know what more Yahweh will say to me.”
19 And now remain here, you also, this night, and I will know what the Lord shall add to speak to me.” | 19 And now remain here, you also, this night, and I will know what the Lord shall add to speak to me.” |
20 And God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise up, and go with them; but you shall do only the word that I will say to you.”
20 And God came to Balaam by night, and said to him, “If these men are coming to call you, rise and follow them; but the word which I shall speak to you, this you will do.” | 20 And God came to Balaam by night, and said to him, “If these men are coming to call you, rise and follow them; but the word which I shall speak to you, this you will do.” |
21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Mōab.
21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the leaders of Mōab. | 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the leaders of Mōab. |
Balaam and Angel
22 And Elohim’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Yahweh stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
22 And God was angry with passion because he went; and the angel of the Lord rose up to dissuade him. Now he was mounted on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. | 22 And God was angry with passion because he went; and the angel of the Lord rose up to dissuade him. Now he was mounted on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. |
23 And the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand. And the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field. And Balaam smote the donkey, to turn her back into the way.
23 And when the donkey saw the angel of God standing in opposition on the road, and his sword drawn in his hand, then the donkey turned aside out of the road, and went into the field; and he struck the donkey with his rod to direct her in the road. | 23 And when the donkey saw the angel of God standing in opposition on the road, and his sword drawn in his hand, then the donkey turned aside out of the road, and went into the field; and he struck the donkey with his rod to direct her in the road. |
24 But the angel of Yahweh stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in the passageways of the vineyard, a fence here and a fence there. | 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in the passageways of the vineyard, a fence here and a fence there. |
25 And when the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she thrust herself toward the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. And he smote her again.
25 And when the donkey saw the angel of God, she pressed herself against the wall, and squashed the foot of Balaam against the wall. And he repeated to whip her again. | 25 And when the donkey saw the angel of God, she pressed herself against the wall, and squashed the foot of Balaam against the wall. And he repeated to whip her again. |
26 And the angel of Yahweh went farther, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
26 And the angel of the Lord repeated and went and stood in a narrow place where it was impossible to turn right or left. | 26 And the angel of the Lord repeated and went and stood in a narrow place where it was impossible to turn right or left. |
27 And when the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she fell down under Balaam; and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the donkey with a staff.
27 And when the donkey saw the angel of God, she sat down under Balaam; and Balaam was angry, and kept striking the donkey with the rod. | 27 And when the donkey saw the angel of God, she sat down under Balaam; and Balaam was angry, and kept striking the donkey with the rod. |
28 And Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
28 And God opened the mouth of the donkey, and she says to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me this third time?” | 28 And God opened the mouth of the donkey, and she says to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me this third time?” |
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me. I wish there was a sword in my hand, for now would I kill you.”
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me; and if I had had a dagger in my hand, I would have killed you already.” | 29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me; and if I had had a dagger in my hand, I would have killed you already.” |
30 And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden ever since I was yours to this day? Was I ever inclined to do so to you?” And he said, “No.”
