To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. 1 Oh Yahweh, you have searched me, and known me.
| 1 For the end, a Psalm of David. Oh Lord, you have proved me, and known me. | 1 For the end, a Psalm of David. Oh Lord, you have proved me, and known me. |
2 You know my down-sitting and my uprising, you understand my thought afar off.
| 2 You know my down-sitting and my up-rising; you understand my thoughts long before. | 2 You know my down-sitting and my up-rising; you understand my thoughts long before. |
3 You encircle my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
| 3 You have traced my path and my bed, and have foreseen all my ways. | 3 You have traced my path and my bed, and have foreseen all my ways. |
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, Oh Yahweh, you know it altogether.
| 4 For there is no unrighteous word in my tongue; behold, Oh Lord, you have known all things, | 4 For there is no unrighteous word in my tongue; behold, Oh Lord, you have known all things, |
5 You have beset me behind and before, and laid your hand on me.
| 5 the last and the first; you have fashioned me, and laid your hand on me. | 5 the last and the first; you have fashioned me, and laid your hand on me. |
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain to it.
| 6 The knowledge of you is too wonderful for me; it is very difficult, I cannot attain to it. | 6 The knowledge of you is too wonderful for me; it is very difficult, I cannot attain to it. |
7 Where shall I go from your spirit? Or to which shall I flee from your presence?
| 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? And to which shall I flee from my presence? | 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? And to which shall I flee from my presence? |
8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there.
| 8 If I should go up to heaven, you are there; if I should go down to hell, you are present. | 8 If I should go up to heaven, you are there; if I should go down to hell, you are present. |
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
| 9 If I should spread my wings to fly straight forward, and stay at the extremity of the sea, it would be vain, | 9 If I should spread my wings to fly straight forward, and stay at the extremity of the sea, it would be vain, |
10 Even there shall your hand lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
| 10 for even there your hand would guide me, and your right hand would hold me. | 10 for even there your hand would guide me, and your right hand would hold me. |
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
| 11 When I said, Surely the darkness will cover me; even the night was light in my luxury. | 11 When I said, Surely the darkness will cover me; even the night was light in my luxury. |
12 Yes, the darkness hides not from you; but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to you.
| 12 For darkness will not be darkness with you; but night will be light as day; as its darkness, so shall its light be to you. | 12 For darkness will not be darkness with you; but night will be light as day; as its darkness, so shall its light be to you. |
13 For you have possessed my reins; you have covered me in my mother’s womb.
| 13 For you, Oh Lord, have possessed my reins; you have helped me from my mother’s womb. | 13 For you, Oh Lord, have possessed my reins; you have helped me from my mother’s womb. |
14 I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are your works; and that my soul knows right well.
| 14 I will give you thanks; for you are fearfully wondrous; wondrous are your works; and my soul knows it well. | 14 I will give you thanks; for you are fearfully wondrous; wondrous are your works; and my soul knows it well. |
15 My substance was not hid from you, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
| 15
οὐκ
τὸ
μου
ἀπὸ
σοῦ,
ὃ
ἐν
| 15 My bones, which you made in secret were not hidden from you, nor my substance, in the lowest parts of the earth. | 15 My bones, which you made in secret were not hidden from you, nor my substance, in the lowest parts of the earth. |
16 Your eyes saw my substance, yet being imperfect; and in your book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
| 16 Thine eyes saw my unwrought substance, and all men shall be written in your book; they shall be formed by day, though there should for a time be no one among them. | 16 Thine eyes saw my unwrought substance, and all men shall be written in your book; they shall be formed by day, though there should for a time be no one among them. |
17 How precious also are your thoughts to me, Oh God! how great is the sum of them!
| 17 But your friends, Oh God, have been greatly honoured by me; their rule has been greatly strengthened. | 17 But your friends, Oh God, have been greatly honoured by me; their rule has been greatly strengthened. |
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with you.
| 18 I will number them, and they shall be multiplied beyond the sand; I awake, and am still with you. | 18 I will number them, and they shall be multiplied beyond the sand; I awake, and am still with you. |
19 Surely you will slay the wicked, Oh God; depart from me therefore, you bloody men.
| 19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, Oh God; depart from me, you men of blood. | 19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, Oh God; depart from me, you men of blood. |
20 For they speak against you wickedly, and your enemies take your name in vain.
| 20 For you will say concerning their thought, that they shall take your cities in vain. | 20 For you will say concerning their thought, that they shall take your cities in vain. |
21 Do not I hate them, Oh Yahweh, that hate you? And am not I grieved with those who rise up against you?
| 21 Have I not hated them, Oh Lord, that hate you? And wasted away because of your enemies? | 21 Have I not hated them, Oh Lord, that hate you? And wasted away because of your enemies? |
22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies.
| 22 I have hated them with perfect hatred; they were counted my enemies. | 22 I have hated them with perfect hatred; they were counted my enemies. |
23 Search me, Oh God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts;
| 23 Prove me, Oh God, and know my heart; examine me, and know my paths; | 23 Prove me, Oh God, and know my heart; examine me, and know my paths; |
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
| 24 and see if there is any way of iniquity in me, and lead me in an everlasting way. | 24 and see if there is any way of iniquity in me, and lead me in an everlasting way. |
