Psalm 35
(LXX 34)
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |
---|
1 Plead my cause, Oh Yahweh, with those who quarrel with me; fight against those who fight against me.
1 Oh Lord, judge those who wrong me, fight against those who fight against me. | 1 Oh Lord, judge those who wrong me, fight against those who fight against me. |
2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help.
2 Seize a circular shield and an oblong shield, and arise for my help. | 2 Seize a circular shield and an oblong shield, and arise for my help. |
3 Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against those who persecute me; say to my soul, I am your salvation.

Pull out a sword, and restrain against those who persecute me; say to my soul, I am your salvation. |
3
Pull out a sword, and restrain against those who persecute me; say to my soul, I am your salvation. |
4 Let them be confounded and put to shame who seek after my soul; let them be turned back and brought to confusion who devise my hurt.
4 Let them be ashamed and embarrassed who seek my soul. Let them be turned away, backward, and be put to shame who scheme evil against me. | 4 Let them be ashamed and embarrassed who seek my soul. Let them be turned away, backward, and be put to shame who scheme evil against me. |
5 Let them be as chaff before the wind; and let the angel of Yahweh chase them.
5 Let them become like dust before the wind, and an angel of the Lord driving them out. | 5 Let them become like dust before the wind, and an angel of the Lord driving them out. |
6 Let their way be dark and slippery; and let the angel of Yahweh persecute them.
6 Let their way become darkness and slippery, and an angel of the Lord pursuing them, | 6 Let their way become darkness and slippery, and an angel of the Lord pursuing them, |
7 For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.
7 Because without reason they concealed their destructive snare for me; purposelessly they defamed my soul. | 7 Because without reason they concealed their destructive snare for me; purposelessly they defamed my soul. |
8 Let destruction come on him at unawares; and let his net that he has hid catch himself; into that very destruction let him fall.
8 Let the snare they don’t notice come on them. And let the trap which is concealed, catch them, and in the snare they will fall in it. | 8 Let the snare he doesn’t notice come on him. And let the trap which is concealed, catch him, and in the snare he will fall in it. |
9 And my soul shall be joyful in Yahweh; it shall rejoice in his salvation.
9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; it shall delight in his salvation. | 9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; it shall delight in his salvation. |
10 All my bones shall say, Yahweh, who is like to you, who delivers the poor from him who is too strong for him, yes, the poor and the needy from him who spoils him?

10
All my bones shall say, Oh Lord, who is like you? Rescuing the poor out of the hand of those who are stronger than he is, both poor and needy from those who plunder him. |
10
All my bones shall say, Oh Lord, who is like you? Rescuing the poor out of the hand of those who are stronger than he is, both poor and needy from those who plunder him. |
11 False witnesses rose up; they laid to my charge things that I didn’t know.
11 Unjust witnesses arose, and asked me about things I didn’t know. | 11 Unjust witnesses arose, and asked me about things I didn’t know. |
12 They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.
12 They repayed me evil for good, and childlessness to my soul. | 12 They repayed me evil for good, and childlessness to my soul. |
13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into my own bosom.
13 But as for me, when they troubled me, I would put on sackcloth and would humble my soul with fasting, and my prayer shall return into my lap. | 13 But as for me, when they troubled me, I would put on sackcloth and would humble my soul with fasting, and my prayer shall return into my lap. |
14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.
14 Like a neighbour, like our brother, so I would be pleasant; as one grieving and sad, so I would humble myself. | 14 Like a neighbour, like our brother, so I would be pleasant; as one grieving and sad, so I would humble myself. |
15 But in my adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together; yes, the attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it; they tore me, and ceased not;
15 They were glad against me and whips were gathered together against me, and I didn’t know it; they were split apart and were not confused; | 15 They were glad against me and whips were gathered together against me, and I didn’t know it; they were split apart and were not confused; |
16 With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed on me with their teeth.
16 They enticed me, they ridiculed me with sarcasm, they gnashed their teeth at me. | 16 They enticed me, they ridiculed me with sarcasm, they gnashed their teeth at me. |
17 Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.
17
17 Oh Lord, when will you look? Restore my soul from their wickedness, my only one from lions. | 17 Oh Lord, when will you look? Restore my soul from their wickedness, my only one from lions. |
18 I will give you thanks in the great congregation; I will praise you among much people.
18 I will confess you Lord in a large assembly; among a burdensome people I will praise you. | 18 I will confess you in a large assembly; among a burdensome people I will praise you. |
19 Don’t let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
19 May those who unjustly are my enemies not gloat over me, those who hate me without cause and wink with the eyes, | 19 May those who unjustly are my enemies not gloat over me, those who hate me without cause and wink with the eyes, |
20 For they don’t speak peace; but they devise deceitful matters against those who are quiet in the land.
20 because as they were speaking peace to me, they were also planning treachery in wrath. | 20 because as they were speaking peace to me, they were also planning treachery in wrath. |
21 Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye has seen it.

21
And they enlarged their mouth against me; they said, Good, Good, our eyes saw. |
22 This you have seen, Oh Yahweh; keep not silence; Oh Lord, don’t be far from me.
22 You saw, Oh Lord; don’t remain silent. Oh Lord, don’t be far from me. | 22 You saw, Oh Lord; don’t remain silent. Oh Lord, don’t be far from me. |
23 Stir up yourself, and awake to my judgment, even to my cause, my God and my Lord.
23 Wake up Lord. And pay attention to my trial, my God and my Lord, to my claim. | 23 Wake up Lord. And pay attention to my trial, my God and my Lord, to my claim. |
24 Judge me, Oh Yahweh my Elohim, according to your righteousness; and don’t let them rejoice over me.
24 Vindicate me, according to your righteousness, Oh Lord my God; and don’t let them gloat over me. | 24 Vindicate me, Oh Lord, according to your righteousness, Oh Lord my God; and don’t let them gloat over me. |
25 Don’t let them say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it; don’t let them say, We have swallowed him up.

26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together who rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonour who magnify themselves against me.
26 May those who gloat at my hardships be both ashamed and embarrassed; let those who boast against me be clothed with shame and embarrassment. | 26 May those who gloat at my hardships be both ashamed and embarrassed; let those who boast against me be clothed with shame and embarrassment. |
27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, who favour my righteous cause; yes, let them say continually, Let Yahweh be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.
