Chapter 4

NASTextRec
Now I say, as long a time as the heir is a child, he doesn’t differ at all from a slave although he is master of all, Now I say, as long a time as the heir is a child, he doesn’t differ at all from a slave although he is master of all,
So also, while we were children, we were enslaved under the elemental things of the world. So also, while we were children, we were enslaved under the elemental things of the world.
so that he might redeem those who were under the Torah, in order that we might receive the adoption as sons. so that he might redeem those who were under the Torah, in order that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God. Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

However at that time, when you didn’t know God, you were enslaved to those which by nature are no gods. However at that time, when you didn’t know God, you were enslaved to those which by nature are no gods.
4:9 νῦν δὲ γνόντες θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ γνωσθέντες ὑπὸ θεοῦ, πῶς ἐπιστρέφετε πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα οἷς πάλιν ἄνωθεν δουλεῦσαι θέλετε; 9 νῦν δέ, γνόντες θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ γνωσθέντες ὑπὸ θεοῦ, πῶς ἐπιστρέφετε πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα, οἷς πάλιν ἄνωθεν δουλεύειν θέλετε;
But now after knowing God, or rather being known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you want to be enslaved all over again? But now after knowing God, or rather being known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you want to be enslaved all over again?
I fear for you, that perhaps I have laboured over you in vain. I fear for you, that perhaps I have laboured over you in vain.
I beg you, become as I am, brothers, because I also have become as you are. You have not offended me. I beg you, become as I am, brothers, because I also have become as you are. You have not offended me.
but you know that it was because of an illness of the flesh that I preached the gospel to you the first time; but you know that it was because of an illness of the flesh that I preached the gospel to you the first time;
and what was a trial to you in my flesh, you didn’t despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself. and my trial which was in my flesh, you didn’t despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself.
4:15 ποῦ οὖν μακαρισμὸς ὑμῶν;
15 τίς οὖν ἦν μακαρισμὸς ὑμῶν;
Where then is your blessing? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. Where then is your blessing? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
4:16 ὥστε ἐχθρὸς ὑμῶν γέγονα ἀληθεύων ὑμῖν; 16 ὥστε ἐχθρὸς ὑμῶν γέγονα ἀληθεύων ὑμῖν;
So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
They seek for you, not appropriately, but they want to exclude you so that you will seek them. They seek for you, not appropriately, but they want to exclude you so that you will seek them.
But it is always good to be sought in an appropriate way, and not only when I am present with you. But it is always good to be sought in an appropriate way, and not only when I am present with you.
My children, of whom I am again in labour pains until Christ is formed in you; My children, of whom I am again in labour pains until Christ is formed in you;
but I want to be present with you now and to change my tone, because I am perplexed about you. but I want to be present with you now and to change my tone, because I am perplexed about you.

The Allegory of Hagar and Sarah

4:21 Λέγετέ μοι, οἱ ὑπὸ νόμον θέλοντες εἶναι, τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀκούετε; 21 Λέγετέ μοι, οἱ ὑπὸ νόμον θέλοντες εἶναι, τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀκούετε;
Tell me, you who want to be under Torah, don’t you understand the Torah? Tell me, you who want to be under Torah, don’t you understand the Torah?
For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the female servant and one by the free woman. For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the female servant and one by the free woman.
But the son by the female servant was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through a promise. But the son by the female servant was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through a promise.
Such things are allegorizing, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai giving birth to slaves; she is Hagar. Such things are allegorizing, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai giving birth to slaves; she is Hagar.
Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, but she is in slavery with her children.
But the Jerusalem above is free; this one is our mother. But the Jerusalem above is free; this one is a mother of us all.
For it is written, “Rejoice, barren woman who doesn’t give birth;
Break forth and shout, you who are not in labour pains;
For more numerous are the children of the desolate
Than of the one who has a husband.”[1]
For it is written, “Rejoice, barren woman who doesn’t give birth;
Break forth and shout, you who are not in labour pains;
For more numerous are the children of the desolate
Than of the one who has a husband.”[1]
And you brothers, like Isaac, are children of a promise. And you brothers, like Isaac, are children of a promise.
But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now too. But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now too.
4:30 ἀλλὰ τί λέγει γραφή;
30 ἀλλὰ τί λέγει γραφή;
But what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the female servant and her son, For the son of the female servant shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”[2] But what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the female servant and her son, For the son of the female servant shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”[2]
Therefore, brothers, we are not children of a female servant, but of the free woman. Therefore, brothers, we are not children of a female servant, but of the free woman.
