Ezekiel’s Commission

1 Moreover he said to me, Son of man, eat that you find; eat this roll, and go speak to the house of Israēl.

1 And he said to me, Son of man, devour this scroll, and go, and speak to the sons of Israēl. 1 And he said to me, Son of man, devour this scroll, and go, and speak to the sons of Israēl.

2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.

2 And I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. 2 And I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll.

3 And he said to me, Son of man, cause your belly to eat, and fill your bowels with this roll that I give you. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.

3 And he said to me, Son of man, your mouth shall eat this scroll that has been given to you, and your belly shall be filled. And I ate it, and in my mouth it was like sweet honey. 3 And he said to me, Son of man, your mouth shall eat this scroll that has been given to you, and your belly shall be filled. And I ate it, and in my mouth it was like sweet honey.

4 And he said to me, Son of man, go, get you to the house of Israēl, and speak with my words to them.

4 And he said to me, Son of man, go, enter to the house of Israēl, and speak my words to them, 4 And he said to me, Son of man, go, enter to the house of Israēl, and speak my words to them,

5 For you are not sent to a people of a strange speech and of a hard language, but to the house of Israēl;

5 because you are being sent out to the house of Israēl, not to a foreign-language people and barbaric speech; 5 because you are being sent out to the house of Israēl, not to a foreign-language people and barbaric speech;

6 Not to many people of a strange speech and of a hard language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, had I sent you to them, they would have listened to you.

6 nor to many foreign-speaking peoples or other languages, nor being thick with their tongue, whose words you will not understand. Even if I had sent you out to such, these would have listened to you. 6 nor to many foreign-speaking peoples or other languages, nor being thick with their tongue, whose words you will not understand. Even if I had sent you out to such, these would have listened to you.

7 But the house of Israēl won’t listen to you; for they won’t listen to me; for all the house of Israēl are impudent and hardhearted.

7 But the house of Israēl shall not be willing to listen to you, because they don’t want to listen to me, because all the house of Israēl are contentious and hard-hearted. 7 But the house of Israēl shall not be willing to listen to you, because they don’t want to listen to me, because all the house of Israēl are contentious and hard-hearted.

8 Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads.

8 And look! I have made your face powerful before their faces, and I will make your argument strong against their arguments, 8 And look! I have made your face powerful before their faces, and I will make your argument strong against their arguments,

9 As an adamant harder than flint have I made your forehead: don’t fear them, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.

9 and it shall be continually stronger than rock. Don’t be afraid of them, nor be terrified from before them, because it is an infuriating house. 9 and it shall be continually stronger than rock. Don’t be afraid of them, nor be terrified from before them, because it is an infuriating house.

10 Moreover he said to me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart, and hear with your ears.

10 And he said to me, Son of man, all the words that I have spoken with you, take into your heart, and hear with your ears, 10 And he said to me, Son of man, all the words that I have spoken with you, take into your heart, and hear with your ears,

11 And go, get you to them of the captivity, to the children of your people, and speak to them, and tell them, Thus says Adonai Yahweh; whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear.

11 and go, enter into the captivity, to the sons of your people, and you will speak to them and say to them, “This is what the Lord says”; if indeed they hear, if indeed they give in. 11 and go, enter into the captivity, to the sons of your people, and you will speak to them and say to them, “This is what the Lord says”; if indeed they hear, if indeed they give in.

12 Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of Yahweh from his place.

12 And a spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a noise of a great shaking, “Blessed is the glory of the Lord from his place.” 12 And a spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a noise of a great shaking, “Blessed is the glory of the Lord from his place.”

13 I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great rushing.

13 And I noticed the sound of the wings of the living beings as they flapped, one against the other. And there was a sound of the wheels beside them, and a sound of the shaking. 13 And I noticed the sound of the wings of the living beings as they flapped, one against the other. And there was a sound of the wheels beside them, and a sound of the shaking.

14 So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of Yahweh was strong on me.

14 And the spirit lifted me up and took me up, and I went in a rush of my spirit, and the hand of the Lord came strong on me. 14 And the spirit lifted me up and took me up, and I went in a rush of my spirit, and the hand of the Lord came strong on me.

15 Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel-abib, who dwelt by the river of Chebar, and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.

15 And I came into the captivity high up and went around those living by the river Chobar, those who were there, and I sat there seven days dwelling among them. 15 And I came into the captivity high up and went around those living by the river Chobar, those who were there, and I sat there seven days dwelling among them.

16 And it happened at the end of seven days, that the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

16 And after seven days, a word of the Lord came to me, saying. 16 And after seven days, a word of the Lord came to me, saying.

17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israēl; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

17 Son of man, I have given you as a watchman to the house of Israēl, and you shall hear a word from my mouth, and you shall threaten them from me. 17 Son of man, I have given you as a watchman to the house of Israēl, and you shall hear a word from my mouth, and you shall threaten them from me.

18 When I say to the wicked, You shall surely die; and you give him not warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at your hand.

18 When I say to the lawless, “By death you shall be put to death,” and you didn’t give him express orders, nor did you speak in order to give the lawless one express orders to turn back from his ways that he might live, that lawless one shall die for his injustice, and I will require his blood from your hand. 18 When I say to the lawless, “By death you shall be put to death,” and you didn’t give him express orders, nor did you speak in order to give the lawless one express orders to turn back from his ways that he might live, that lawless one shall die for his injustice, and I will require his blood from your hand.

19 Yet if you warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.

19 And if you give the lawless one express orders and he doesn’t turn back from his lawlessness and his way, that lawless one shall die for his injustice, and you shall rescue your soul. 19 And if you give the lawless one express orders and he doesn’t turn back from his lawlessness and his way, that lawless one shall die for his injustice, and you shall rescue your soul.

20 Again, When a righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die: because you haven’t given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at your hand.

20 And when a righteous one turns away from his righteousnesses, and if he commits transgression, and I will give misfortune before him, he shall die, because you didn’t give him express orders. And he shall die in his sins, because his righteousnesses that he did shall not be remembered, and I will require his blood from your hand. 20 And when a righteous one turns away from his righteousnesses, and if he commits transgression, and I will give misfortune before him, he shall die, because you didn’t give him express orders. And he shall die in his sins, because his righteousnesses that he did shall not be remembered, and I will require his blood from your hand.

21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man, that the righteous doesn’t sin, and he doesn’t sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also you have delivered your soul.

21 But you, if you give the righteous express orders not to sin, and he doesn’t sin, the righteous shall live by life, because you gave him express orders, and you shall rescue your own soul. 21 But you, if you give the righteous express orders not to sin, and he doesn’t sin, the righteous shall live by life, because you gave him express orders, and you shall rescue your own soul.

22 And the hand of Yahweh was there on me; and he said to me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with you.

22 And the hand of the Lord came on me, and he said to me, “Rise up, and go out into the plain, and there it shall be spoken to you.” 22 And the hand of the Lord came on me, and he said to me, “Rise up, and go out into the plain, and there it shall be spoken to you.”

23 Then I arose, and went forth into the plain: and, behold, the glory of Yahweh stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Chebar; and I fell on my face.

23 And I arose and went out into the plain, and look! the glory of the Lord stood there, just like the appearance and just like the glory that I saw by the river Chobar, and I fell on my face. 23 And I arose and went out into the plain, and look! the glory of the Lord stood there, just like the appearance and just like the glory that I saw by the river Chobar, and I fell on my face.

24 Then the spirit entered into me, and set me on my feet, and spoke with me, and said to me, Go, shut yourself within your house.

24 And the spirit came on me and set me on my feet, and he spoke to me and said to me: Enter, and be enclosed within your home. 24 And the spirit came on me and set me on my feet, and he spoke to me and said to me: Enter, and be enclosed within your home.

25 But you, Oh son of man, behold, they shall put bands on you, and shall bind you with them, and you shall not go out among them.

25 As for you, son of man, look! chains have been given on you, and they shall bind you with them, and you shall not go out from their midst. 25 As for you, son of man, look! chains have been given on you, and they shall bind you with them, and you shall not go out from their midst.

26 And I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, that you shall be dumb, and shall not be to them a reprover; for they are a rebellious house.

26 And I will bind tight your tongue, and you shall be made mute, and to them you shall not be as a man who convicts, for it is an infuriating house. 26 And I will bind tight your tongue, and you shall be made mute, and to them you shall not be as a man who convicts, for it is an infuriating house.

27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, Thus says Adonai Yahweh; He who hears, let him hear; and he who forbears, let him forbear; for they are a rebellious house.

27 And when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, “This is what the Lord says.” Let the one who hears hear, and let the one who refuses refuse, because it is an infuriating house. 27 And when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, “This is what the Lord says.” Let the one who hears hear, and let the one who refuses refuse, because it is an infuriating house.
