Separation from God
1 Behold, Yahweh’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.
1
μὴ
οὐκ
ἡ
τοῦ
1
Is not the Lord’s hand strong to save?
Or has he made his ear heavy so as not to listen? |
1
Is not the Lord’s hand strong to save?
Or has he made his ear heavy so as not to listen? |
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he won’t hear.
2 Rather, your sinful acts separate between you and God, and because of your sins he has turned his face away from you so as not to show mercy. | 2 Rather, your sinful acts separate between you and God, and because of your sins he has turned his face away from you so as not to show mercy. |
3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perverseness.
3 For your hands have been defiled with blood, and your fingers with sins, and your lips have spoken lawlessness, and your tongue thinks about unrighteousness. | 3 For your hands have been defiled with blood, and your fingers with sins, and your lips have spoken lawlessness, and your tongue thinks about unrighteousness. |
4 None calls for justice, nor any pleads for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
4 No one speaks righteous things, nor is there true judgment; they have trusted on vanities, and they speak empty words, because they conceive pain and give birth to lawlessness. | 4 No one speaks righteous things, nor is there true judgment; they have trusted on vanities, and they speak empty words, because they conceive pain and give birth to lawlessness. |
5 They hatch the eggs of the cockatrice, and weave the spider’s web: he who eats of their eggs dies, and what is crushed breaks out into a viper.
5 They broke the eggs of asps and weave the web of a spider, and the one who intended to eat their eggs, after breaking them found wind, and in it was a basilisk snake. | 5 They broke the eggs of asps and weave the web of a spider, and the one who intended to eat their eggs, after breaking them found wind, and in it was a basilisk snake. |
6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
6 Their web shall not become a garment, nor shall they be clothed from their works, for their works are works of lawlessness. | 6 Their web shall not become a garment, nor shall they be clothed from their works, for their works are works of lawlessness. |
7 Their feet run to evil, and they make have to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; ruin and destruction are in their paths.
7 And their feet run to evil, swift to shed blood, and their reasonings are reasonings of fools; destruction and misery are in their ways. | 7 And their feet run to evil, swift to shed blood, and their reasonings are reasonings of fools; destruction and misery are in their ways. |
8 The way of peace they didn’t know; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whoever goes in it shall not know peace.
8 And they haven’t known a way of peace, and there is no judgment in their ways, for their paths, through which they travel, are perverted, and they don’t know peace. | 8 And they haven’t known a way of peace, and there is no judgment in their ways, for their paths, through which they travel, are perverted, and they don’t know peace. |
A Confession of Wickedness
9 Therefore is judgment far from us, neither does justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
9 Therefore their judgment has departed from them, and righteousness won’t overtake them; after waiting for the light, darkness came to them; after waiting for dawn, they walked at midnight. | 9 Therefore their judgment has departed from them, and righteousness won’t overtake them; after waiting for the light, darkness came to them; after waiting for dawn, they walked at midnight. |
10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.
10
They will grope the wall like blind men, and they will grope like those who have no eyes.
And they will fall at noon as at midnight; they will groan like dying men. |
10
They will grope the wall like blind men, and they will grope like those who have no eyes.
And they will fall at noon as at midnight; they will groan like dying men. |
11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.
11
Like a bear and like a dove they will walk together.
We waited for judgment, but there was none; salvation has withdrawn far from us. |
11
Like a bear and like a dove they will walk together.
We waited for judgment, but there was none; salvation has withdrawn far from us. |
12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;
12 For our lawlessness was great before you and our sins have risen up against us; for our acts of lawlessness are in us, and we knew our wrongs; | 12 For our lawlessness was great before you and our sins have risen up against us; for our acts of lawlessness are in us, and we knew our wrongs; |
13
In transgressing and lying against Yahweh, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
13 we were ungodly and lied and turned away from behind our God; we spoke unrighteous things and disobeyed; we conceived and repeated unrighteous words from our heart. | 13 we were ungodly and lied and turned away from behind our God; we spoke unrighteous things and disobeyed; we conceived and repeated unrighteous words from our heart. |
14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice stands afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
14 And we removed our judgment behind us, and righteousness withdrew far away, because the truth was consumed in their ways, and they were unable to travel through a straight path. | 14 And we removed our judgment behind us, and righteousness withdrew far away, because the truth was consumed in their ways, and they were unable to travel through a straight path. |
15 Yes, truth fails; and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey; and Yahweh saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
15
καὶ
ἡ
καὶ
τὴν
τοῦ
15
And the truth had been taken away, and they removed their thought from understanding.
The Lord saw it, and it didn’t please him that there was no judgment. |
15
And the truth had been taken away, and they removed their thought from understanding.
The Lord saw it, and it didn’t please him that there was no judgment. |
16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor; therefore his arm brought salvation to him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
16 And he saw, and there was no man, and he observed, and there was none who helped; so he defended them with his own arm, and with his compassion he supported them. | 16 And he saw, and there was no man, and he observed, and there was none who helped; so he defended them with his own arm, and with his compassion he supported them. |
17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
17 And he wore righteousness like a breastplate and placed a helmet of salvation on his head, and he clothed himself with a garment of vengeance and with his cloak, | 17 And he wore righteousness like a breastplate and placed a helmet of salvation on his head, and he clothed himself with a garment of vengeance and with his cloak, |
18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense.
18 as one about to render retribution, reproach to his adversaries. | 18 as one about to render retribution, reproach to his adversaries. |
19 So shall they fear the name of Yahweh from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Yahweh shall lift up a standard against him.
19 And those from the west shall fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun, his glorious name, for anger will come from the Lord like a violent river. It will come with wrath. | 19 And those from the west shall fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun, his glorious name, for anger will come from the Lord like a violent river. It will come with wrath. |
20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacōb, says Yahweh.
20 And the one who rescues will come for Siōn’s sake, and he will turn away impiety from Jakōb. | 20 And the one who rescues will come for Siōn’s sake, and he will turn away impiety from Jakōb. |
21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, says Yahweh; My spirit that is on you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your seed, nor out of the mouth of your seed’s seed, says Yahweh, from henceforth and forever.
21 And this is the covenant to them from me, said the Lord, my spirit that is on you and my words that I have given in your mouth shall not fail out of your mouth or out of the mouth of your offspring, for the Lord has said it, from now on and forever. | 21 And this is the covenant to them from me, said the Lord, my spirit that is on you and my words that I have given in your mouth shall not fail out of your mouth or out of the mouth of your offspring, for the Lord has said it, from now on and forever. |
