Chapter 58

Observances of Fasts

1 Cry aloud, don’t spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacōb their sins.

1 Cry aloud with strength, and don’t relent!
Lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare their sins to my people, to the house of Jakōb their acts of lawlessness.

Lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare their sins to my people, to the house of Jakōb their acts of lawlessness.

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

2 Day after day they seek me and desire to know my ways.
Like a people who practiced righteousness and didn’t forsake the judgment of their God, they now ask of me righteous judgment, and they desire to draw near to God,

3 Why have we fasted, say they, and you see not? Therefore have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

3 λέγοντες τί ὅτι ἐνηστεύσαμεν καὶ οὐκ εἶδες;
ἐταπεινώσαμεν τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως;
3 λέγοντες· τί ὅτι ἐνηστεύσαμεν καὶ οὐκ εἶδες;
ἐταπεινώσαμεν τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως;
3 saying, “Why did we fast and you didn’t see; we humbled our souls, but you didn’t know?” For in the days of your fasts you find your own desires and goad all those who are under you. 3 saying, “Why did we fast and you didn’t see; we humbled our souls, but you didn’t know?” For in the days of your fasts you find your own desires and goad all those who are under you.

4 Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: you shall not fast as you do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

4 εἰ εἰς κρίσεις καὶ μάχας νηστεύετε καὶ τύπτετε πυγμαῖς ταπεινόν, ἵνα τί μοι νηστεύετε ὡς σήμερον ἀκουσθῆναι ἐν κραυγῇ τὴν φωνὴν ὑμῶν; 4 εἰ εἰς κρίσεις καὶ μάχας νηστεύετε καὶ τύπτετε πυγμαῖς ταπεινόν, ἱνατί μοι νηστεύετε ὡς σήμερον, ἀκουσθῆναι ἐν κραυγῇ τὴν φωνὴν ὑμῶν;
4 If you fast for decisions and fights and you punch a humble person with your fists, why do you fast for me as you do today so that your voice may be heard by its shout? 4 If you fast for decisions and fights and you punch a humble person with your fists, why do you fast for me as you do today so that your voice may be heard by its shout?

5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?

5 This isn’t the fast that I have chosen, even a day for a man to humble his soul; not even if you bend your neck like a ring and spread under you sackcloth and ashes; not even so you shall call it an approved fast. 5 This isn’t the fast that I have chosen, even a day for a man to humble his soul; not even if you bend your neck like a ring and spread under you sackcloth and ashes; not even so you shall call it an approved fast.

6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

6 I have not chosen such a fast, says the Lord; but instead untie every bond of injustice; undo the knots of hard contracts; with forgiveness release those who have been treated harshly; and tear up every unjust document. 6 I have not chosen such a fast, says the Lord; but instead untie every bond of injustice; undo the knots of hard contracts; with forgiveness release those who have been treated harshly; and tear up every unjust document.

7 Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you don’t hide yourself from your own flesh?

7 Break your bread with the one who is hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; if you see one naked, clothe him, and you shall not neglect any of the relatives of your seed. 7 Break your bread with the one who is hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; if you see one naked, clothe him, and you shall not neglect any of the relatives of your seed.

8 Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your health shall spring forth speedily; and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of Yahweh shall be your rear guard.

8 Then your light shall burst forth early in the morning, and your healings shall rise quickly, and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall cover you. 8 Then your light shall burst forth early in the morning, and your healings shall rise quickly, and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall cover you.

9 Then you shall call, and Yahweh shall answer; you shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

9 Then you shall cry out, and God will listen to you; while you are still speaking, he will say, Look! I am here. If you remove from you a bond and a hand stretch and a grumbling word 9 Then you shall cry out, and God will listen to you; while you are still speaking, he will say, Look! I am here. If you remove from you a bond and a hand stretch and a grumbling word

10 And if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall your light rise in obscurity, and your darkness be as the noonday.

10 and give to one who is hungry bread from your soul and satisfy a soul that has been humbled, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your darkness shall be like noonday. 10 and give to one who is hungry bread from your soul and satisfy a soul that has been humbled, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your darkness shall be like noonday.

11 And Yahweh shall guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and make fat your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

11 And your God will be with you continually, and you shall be satisfied just as your soul desires, and your bones shall be enriched, and they shall be like a soaked garden and like a fountain whose water has never failed. 11 And your God will be with you continually, and you shall be satisfied just as your soul desires, and your bones shall be enriched, and they shall be like a soaked garden and like a fountain whose water has never failed.

12 And they who shall be of you shall build the old waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

12 And your ancient wilderness shall be built, and your foundations shall be everlasting, for generations of generations, and you shall be called a builder of barriers, and you shall cause the paths between them to rest. 12 And your ancient wilderness shall be built, and your foundations shall be everlasting, for generations of generations, and you shall be called a builder of barriers, and you shall cause the paths between them to rest.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 If you turn away your foot from the sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of Yahweh, honourable; and shall honour him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words.

13 If you turn your foot away from the sabbaths, so as not to do the things you wish on the holy day, and you shall call the sabbaths delicate, holy to your God, you shall not lift your foot for work nor speak a word in anger out of your mouth; 13 If you turn your foot away from the sabbaths, so as not to do the things you wish on the holy day, and you shall call the sabbaths delicate, holy to your God, you shall not lift your foot for work nor speak a word in anger out of your mouth;

14 Then you shall delight yourself in Yahweh; and I will cause you to ride on the high places of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacōb your father; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.

14 then you shall have confidence in the Lord, and he shall bring you up on the good things of the land and feed you with the inheritanc of your father Jakōb, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things. 14 then you shall have confidence in the Lord, and he shall bring you up on the good things of the land and feed you with the inheritanc of your father Jakōb, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.
