1 See how the righteous perished, and no one takes it to heart; righteous men are being taken away, and no one takes notice, for the righteous has been taken away from the presence of unrighteousness; | 1 See how the righteous perished, and no one takes it to heart; righteous men are being taken away, and no one takes notice, for the righteous has been taken away from the presence of unrighteousness; |
2 He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.
2 his burial will be in peace; he has been taken away from the midst. | 2 his burial will be in peace; he has been taken away from the midst. |
3 But draw near here, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the prostitute.
3 But as for you, draw near here, you lawless sons, you offspring of adulterers and of a prostitute. | 3 But as for you, draw near here, you lawless sons, you offspring of adulterers and of a prostitute. |
4 Against whom do you sport yourselves? Against whom make you a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are you not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,

4
In what have you mocked?
And against whom have you opened wide your mouth? And against whom have you loosened your tongue? Are you not children of destruction, a lawless offspring? |
4
In what have you mocked?
And against whom have you opened wide your mouth? And against whom have you loosened your tongue? Are you not children of destruction? A lawless offspring? |
5 Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the cliffs of the rocks?
5 You are the ones who call on the idols under leafy trees, slaughtering their children in the valleys, between the rocks. | 5 You are the ones who call on the idols under leafy trees, slaughtering their children in the valleys, between the rocks. |
6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is your portion; they, they are your lot: even to them have you poured a drink offering, you have offered a food offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
6
That is your portion; this is your lot, and to them you have poured out libations, and to them you have brought a sacrifice.
Shall I not therefore be angry for these things? |
6
That is your portion; this is your lot, and to them you have poured out libations, and to them you have brought a sacrifice.
Shall I not therefore be angry for these things? |
7 Upon a lofty and high mountain have you set your bed: even to that place went you up to offer sacrifice.
7 Upon a high and lofty mountain, there was your bed, and there you brought up sacrifices. | 7 Upon a high and lofty mountain, there was your bed, and there you brought up sacrifices. |
8 Behind the doors also and the posts have you set up your remembrance; for you have discovered yourself to another than me, and are gone up; you have enlarged your bed, and made you a covenant with them; you loved their bed where you saw it.
8
Behind the posts of your door you have set up your memorials.
You supposed that if you should desert me, you would obtain something more. You have loved those who lay with you |

9 And you went to the king with ointment, and did increase your perfumes, and sent your messengers far off, and did debase yourself even to hell.
9 and multiplied your fornication with them, and you have made many those who were far from you and sent ambassadors beyond your borders, and you turned away and were humbled even to Hades. | 9 and multiplied your fornication with them, and you have made many those who were far from you and sent ambassadors beyond your borders, and you turned away and were humbled even to Hades. |
10
You are wearied in the greatness of your way; yet you didn’t say, There is no hope: you have found the life of your hand; therefore you were not grieved.
10 You grew weary by your long journeys, but you didn’t say, “I will stop gaining strength.” Because you have committed these things, therefore you didn’t beg me. | 10 You grew weary by your long journeys, but you didn’t say, “I will stop gaining strength.” Because you have committed these things, therefore you didn’t beg me. |
11 And of whom have you been afraid or feared, that you have lied, and haven’t remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven’t I held my peace even of old, and you fear me not?

Of whom were you anxious and afraid, and you lied to me and didn’t remember me, nor did you take me into your thought or into your heart?
And when I see you, I disregard you, and you didn’t fear me. |

12 I will declare your righteousness, and your works; for they shall not profit you.
12 And I will declare my righteousness and your evils, which won’t help you. | 12 And I will declare my righteousness and your evils, which won’t help you. |
13 When you cry, let your companies deliver you; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them; but he who puts his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain;

When you cry out, let them deliver you in your affliction.
For the wind will take all of these, and a storm will carry them away. But those who cling to me shall possess land and inherit my holy mountain. |

For the wind will take all of these, and a storm will carry them away. But those who cling to me shall possess land and inherit my holy mountain. |
14 And shall say, Cast you up, cast you up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people.
14 And they shall say, “Cleanse the ways before him, and remove the hindrances from my people’s way.” | 14 And they shall say, “Cleanse the ways before him, and remove the hindrances from my people’s way.” |
15 For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
15 This is what the Lord says, the Most High, who lives forever in lofty places; Holy among the holy ones is his name, the Lord Most High who rests among the holy ones and gives patience to the discouraged and gives life to those who are broken of heart; | 15 This is what the Lord says, the Most High, who lives forever in lofty places; Holy among the holy ones is his name, the Lord Most High who rests among the holy ones and gives patience to the discouraged and gives life to those who are broken of heart; |
16 For I won’t contend forever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.
16 I won’t punish you forever, nor will I always be angry with you, for a spirit shall go forth from me, and I have made every breath. | 16 I won’t punish you forever, nor will I always be angry with you, for a spirit shall go forth from me, and I have made every breath. |
17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on deceitfully in the way of his heart.
17 Because of sin I grieved him a short time; I struck him and turned my face away from him, and he was grieved and went on gloomy in his ways. | 17 Because of sin I grieved him a short time; I struck him and turned my face away from him, and he was grieved and went on gloomy in his ways. |
18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners.
18 I have seen his ways, and I healed him and comforted him, and, gave him true comfort, | 18 I have seen his ways, and I healed him and comforted him, and, gave him true comfort, |
19 I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him who is far off, and to him who is near, says Yahweh; and I will heal him.
19 peace on peace to those that are far and to those that are near. And the Lord said, I will heal them. | 19 peace on peace to those that are far and to those that are near. And the Lord said, I will heal them. |
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
20 But thus shall the unrighteous be tossed to and fro and shall not be able to rest. | 20 But thus shall the unrighteous be tossed to and fro and shall not be able to rest. |
21
There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked.
21 There is no rejoicing for the ungodly, said the Lord God. | 21 There is no rejoicing for the ungodly, said the Lord God. |
