Chapter 5

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Israēl Is Circumcised

1 And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the sons of Israēl, until we had crossed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the sons of Israēl.

1 And it happened when the kings of the Amorrites who were beyond the Jordan and the kings of Phoinikia who were by the sea, heard that the Lord God dried up the Jordan river from before the sons of Israēl when they went through, that their minds melted, and they were terror-stricken, and there was no understanding in them from before the sons of Israēl.

2 At that time Yahweh said to Joshua, “Make sharp knives for yourself, and circumcise again the sons of Israēl the second time.”

2 And about this time the Lord said to Jēsous, “Make flint knives of sharp rock for yourself, and sit down and circumcise the sons of Israēl.” 2 And about this time the Lord said to Jēsous, “Make flint knives of sharp rock for yourself, and sit down and circumcise the sons of Israēl the second time.”

3 And Joshua made himself sharp knives, and circumcised the sons of Israēl at the hill of their foreskins.

3 And Jēsous made sharp knives of flint, and circumcised the sons of Israēl at the place called the "Hill of Foreskins." 3 And Jēsous made sharp knives of flint, and circumcised the sons of Israēl at the place called the "Hill of Foreskins."

4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised. All the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

4 And the manner which Jēsous purified the sons of Israēl; as many as were born on the way, and as many as were uncircumcised of those who had come out of Aigypt, 4 And the manner which Jēsous purified the sons of Israēl; as many as were born on the way, and as many as were uncircumcised of those who had come out of Aigypt, Jēsous circumcised all these.

5 Now all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.

5 Jēsous circumcised all these. 5 For 42 years, Israēl wandered in the wilderness of Mabdaris,

6 For the sons of Israēl walked 40 years in the wilderness, until all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, perished, because they didn’t obey the voice of Yahweh. Yahweh swore to them that he would not show them the land, which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

6 For 40 years, Israēl wandered in the wilderness of Mabdaris, Therefore, most of the fighting men who came out of the land of Aigypt were uncircumcised, who disobeyed the commands of God; concerning whom he also determined that they should not see the land that the Lord solemnly promised to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 6 Therefore, most of the fighting men who came out of the land of Aigypt were uncircumcised, who disobeyed the commands of God; concerning whom he also determined that they should not see the land that the Lord solemnly promised to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

7 He raised their sons in their place. And Joshua circumcised them for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

7 And in their place he raised up their sons, whom Jēsous circumcised, because they were uncircumcised, having been born on the way. 7 And in their place he raised up their sons, whom Jēsous circumcised, because they were uncircumcised, having been born on the way.

8 And it happened, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, until they were healed.

8 And after they were circumcised, they resided in the camp until they were healed. 8 And after they were circumcised, they resided in the camp until they were healed.

9 And Yahweh said to Joshua, “This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

9 And the Lord said to Jēsous the son of Nauē, “On today’s day, I removed the reproach of Aigypt from you;” and he called the name of that place Galgala. 9 And the Lord said to Jēsous the son of Nauē, “On today’s day, I removed the reproach of Aigypt from you;” and he called the name of that place Galgala.

10 And the sons of Israēl encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the 14th day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

10 And the sons of Israēl kept the Passover on the 14th day of the month from evening at sunset at Jerichō on the opposite side of the Jordan in the plain. 10 And the sons of Israēl kept the Passover on the 14th day of the month from evening at sunset at Jerichō on the opposite side of the Jordan in the plain.

11 And they ate of the old grain of the land on the next day after the Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched grain in the very same day.

11 And they ate from the grain of the land unleavened and fresh things. On this day, 11 And they ate from the grain of the land unleavened and fresh things.

12 And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten some of the old grain of the land; neither had the sons of Israēl manna any more; but they ate from the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

12 the manna failed, after they had eaten from the grain of the land, and the sons of Israēl no longer had manna; and they enjoyed the fruits of the land of the Phoinikians in that year. 12 the manna failed, after they had eaten from the grain of the land, and the sons of Israēl no longer had manna; and they enjoyed the fruits of the land of the Phoinikians in that year.

13 And it happened, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, suddenly, a man stood opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went to him, and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

καὶ προσελθὼν Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἡμέτερος εἶ τῶν ὑπεναντίων;
καὶ προσελθὼν Ἰησοῦς εἶπε αὐτῷ· ἡμέτερος εἶ τῶν ὑπεναντίων;
13 And it happened when Jēsous was at Jerichō, after he looked up with his eyes, he saw a man standing before him, and his sword was drawn in his hand; and Jēsous approached and said to him, “Are you ours or of the opponents?” 13 And it happened when Jēsous was at Jerichō, after he looked up with his eyes, he saw a man standing before him, and his sword was drawn in his hand; and Jēsous approached and said to him, “Are you ours or of the opponents?”

14 And he said, “No; but as captain of the army of Yahweh I am now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the ground, and worshipped, and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

καὶ Ἰησοῦς ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δέσποτα, τί προστάσσεις τῷ σῷ οἰκέτῃ;
καὶ Ἰησοῦς ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· δέσποτα, τί προστάσσεις τῷ σῷ οἰκέτῃ;
14 And he said to him, “As commander-in-chief of the Lord’s forces, I have now come.” And Jēsous fell on his face on the ground, and said to him, “Master, what do you command your servant?” 14 And he said to him, “As commander-in-chief of the Lord’s forces, I have now come.” And Jēsous fell on his face on the ground, and said to him, “Master, what do you command your servant?”

15 And the captain of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Untie your sandal from off your foot; for the place on which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

15 And the commander-in-chief of the Lord said to Jēsous, “Unbuckle your sandal from your feet, for the place on which you now stand is holy.” 15 And the commander-in-chief of the Lord said to Jēsous, “Unbuckle your sandal from your feet, for the place on which you now stand is holy.”
