The Conquest of Jericho
1 Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the sons of Israēl; no one went out, and no one came in.
1 Now after Jerichō had been closed up and fortified, no one was going out of it nor entering. | 1 Now after Jerichō had been closed up and fortified, no one was going out of it nor entering. |
2 And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Look, into your hand, I have given Jericho, and its king, and the mighty men of valour.
2 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Behold, I am delivering Jerichō into your control, and its king in it, and its mighty men in strength. | 2 And the Lord said to Jēsous, “Behold, I am delivering Jerichō into your control, and its king in it, and its mighty men in strength. |
3 And you and all your men of war shall circle the city, and go all around the city once. Thus you shall do six days.
3 And you, encircle it by warriors in a circle, | 3 And you, encircle it by warriors in a circle, |
4 And seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark; and on the seventh day you shall circle the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.
4 N/A | 4 And it shall be that when you shall sound with the trumpet, let all the people shout together. |
5 And it will happen, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.”
5 And it shall be that when you shall sound with the trumpet, let all the people shout together. And after they shout, the walls of the city shall fall of themselves; and all the people shall enter, each one rushing headlong into the city.” | 5 And after they shout, the walls of the city shall fall of themselves; and all the people shall enter, each one rushing headlong into the city.” |
6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh.”
6 And Jēsous the son of Nauē went in to the priests, | 6 And Jēsous the son of Nauē went in to the priests, |
7 And he said to the people, “Go ahead, and surround the city, and let him who is armed gp on before the ark of Yahweh.”
7 and spoke to them saying, “Command the people to go around and surround the city and let the warriors pass by in armament before the Lord.” | 7 and spoke to them saying, “Command the people to go around and surround the city and let the warriors pass by in armament before the Lord.” |
8 And it happened, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before Yahweh, and blew with the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them.
8 And let seven priests holding seven sacred trumpets proceed thus before the Lord, and let them signal vigorously; and let the ark of the covenant of the Lord follow. | 8 And let seven priests holding seven sacred trumpets proceed thus before the Lord, and let them signal vigorously; and let the ark of the covenant of the Lord follow. |
9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew with the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, the priests went on, and blew with the trumpets.
9 And let the warriors proceed in front, and the priests who bring up the rear behind the ark of the covenant of the Lord proceeding and trumpeting. | 9 And let the warriors proceed in front, and the priests who bring up the rear behind the ark of the covenant of the Lord proceeding and trumpeting. |
10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you ‘shout!’ Then you shall shout.”
10 And Jēsous commanded the people, saying, “Don’t shout and don’t let anyone hear your voice, until the day he himself tells you to shout, and then you shall shout.” | 10 And Jēsous commanded the people, saying, “Don’t shout and don’t let anyone hear your voice, until the day he himself tells you to shout, and then you shall shout.” |
11 So the ark of Yahweh circled the city, going about it once; and they came back into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
11 And after the ark of the covenant of God went around the city, immediately it went away into the camp, and lodged there. | 11 And after the ark of the covenant of God went around, immediately it went away into the camp, and lodged there. |
12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Yahweh.
12 And on the second day, Jēsous rose up in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord. | 12 And on the second day, Jēsous rose up in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord. |
13 And seven priests carrying seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh went on continually, and blew with the trumpets; and the armed men went before them; but the rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh, the priests kept going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
13 And the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went on before the Lord; and afterwards the warriors entered, and the rest of the crowd behind the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. And all the rest of the crowd encircled the city from nearby. |
14 And the second day they circled the city once, and returned into the camp; so they did six days.

14 And went back again into the camp. They did this for six days. | 14 And went back again into the camp. They did this for six days. |
15 And it happened on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and circled the city after the same manner seven times; only on that day they circled the city seven times.
15 And on the seventh day, they rose up at dawn, and went around the city six times. | 15 And on the seventh day, they rose up at dawn, and went around the city six times on that day. |
16 And it happened at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For Yahweh has given you the city.
16 And on the seventh circuit, the priests sounded the trumpets; and Joshua said to the sons of Israēl, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. | 16 And on the seventh circuit, the priests sounded the trumpets; and Joshua said to the sons of Israēl, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. |
17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all who are in it, to Yahweh; only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.
17 And the city shall be condemned, it and all things that are in it, to the Lord of Hosts; but preserve Rhaab the prostitute, her and all things in her house. | 17 And the city shall be condemned, it and all things that are in it, to the Lord of Hosts; but preserve Rhaab the prostitute, her and all things in her house. |
18 And as for you, be sure to keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest you make yourselves accursed, when you take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israēl a curse, and trouble it.
18 But keep yourselves well away from the accursed thing, lest after you covet, you take of the accursed thing, and you make the camp of the sons of Israēl an accursed thing, and annihilate us. | 18 But keep yourselves well away from the accursed thing, lest after you covet, you take of the accursed thing, and you make the camp of the sons of Israēl an accursed thing, and annihilate us. |
19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to Yahweh; they shall come into the treasury of Yahweh.”
19 And all the silver, or gold, or copper-alloy, or iron, shall be dedicated to the Lord; it shall be carried into the treasury of the Lord.” | 19 And all the silver, or gold, or copper-alloy, or iron, shall be dedicated to the Lord; it shall be carried into the treasury of the Lord.” |
20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets; and it happened, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

20 And the priests trumpeted with the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpets, all the people shouted together with a loud and strong shout; and all the wall around fell, and all the people went up into the city; | 20 And the priests trumpeted with the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpets, all the people shouted together with a loud and strong shout; and all the wall around fell, and all the people went up into the city; |
21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.
21 and with the edge of the sword, Jēsous condemned it, and all that was in the city, from man to woman, young man to old, and calf and beast of burden. | 21 and with the edge of the sword, Jēsous condemned it, and all that was in the city, from man to woman, young man to old, and calf and beast of burden. |
22 But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, “Go into the prostitute’s house, and bring out from there the woman, and all that she has, as you swore to her.”
22 And Jēsous said to the two young men who were spies, “Go into the house of the woman, and bring her out from there, and all that is hers.” | 22 And Jēsous said to the two young men who were spies, “Go into the house of the woman, and bring her out from there, and all that is hers.” |
23 And the young men who were spies went in, and brought Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them outside the camp of Israēl.
23 And the two young men who spied out the city entered into the house of the woman, and brought out Rhaab the prostitute, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and that was hers, and her relatives; and they set her outside the camp of Israēl. | 23 And the two young men who spied out the city entered into the house of the woman, and brought out Rhaab the prostitute, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and that was hers, and her relatives; and they set her outside the camp of Israēl. |
24 And they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Yahweh.
24 And the city was burned with burning with all that was in it; but of the silver, and gold, and copper-alloy, and iron, they gave to be brought into the treasury of the Lord. | 24 And the city was burned with burning with all that was in it; but of the silver, and gold, and copper-alloy, and iron, they gave to be brought into the treasury of the Lord. |
25 And Joshua saved Rahab the prostitute alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwells in Israēl even to this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
25 And Jēsous preserved alive Rhaab the prostitute, and all the house of her father, and she dwelt in Israēl until this day, because she hid the spies whom Jēsous sent to spy out Jerichō. | 25 And Jēsous preserved alive Rhaab the prostitute, and all the house of her father, and she dwelt in Israēl until this day, because she hid the spies whom Jēsous sent to spy out Jerichō. |
26 And Joshua charged them at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Yahweh, who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay the foundation of it in his firstborn, and in his youngest son he shall set up the gates of it.”

26 And on that day, Jēsous charged them before the Lord, saying, “Cursed be the man who shall build that city; he shall lay the foundation of it with [the life of] his first-born, and he shall set up the gates of it with [the life of] his youngest son.” And so did Ozan of Baithēl; he laid the foundation with [the life of] Abirōn his first-born, and set up the gates of it with [the life of] his youngest son who escaped. |
