I Samuel

1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiēl, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

1 καὶ ἦν ἀνὴρ ἐξ υἱῶν Βενιαμίν, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Κὶς υἱὸς Ἀβιὴλ υἱοῦ Σαρὲδ υἱοῦ Βαχὶρ υἱοῦ Ἀφὲκ υἱοῦ ἀνδρὸς Ἰεμιναίου, ἀνὴρ δυνατός.	1 Καὶ ἀνὴρ ἐξ υἱῶν Βενιαμίν, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Κίς, υἱὸς Ἀβιήλ, υἱοῦ Ἰαρέδ, υἱοῦ Βαχίρ, υἱοῦ Ἀφέκ, υἱοῦ ἀνδρὸς Ἰεμιναίου, ἀνὴρ δυνατός.

2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a good; and there wasn’t among the sons of Israēl a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

2 καὶ τούτῳ υἱός, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Σαούλ, εὐμεγέθης, ἀνὴρ ἀγαθός, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἐν υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ ἀγαθὸς ὑπὲρ αὐτόν, ὑπὲρ ὠμίαν καὶ ἐπάνω ὑψηλὸς ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν.	2 καὶ τούτῳ υἱός, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Σαούλ, εὐμεγέθης, ἀνὴρ ἀγαθός, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἐν υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ ἀγαθὸς ὑπὲρ αὐτόν, ὑπερωμίαν καὶ ἐπάνω ὑψηλὸς ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν.
2 And to this man, a son; and his name was Saoul, a tall, good man. 3 And the donkeys of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.

3 καὶ ἀπώλοντο αἱ ὄνοι Κὶς πατρὸς Σαούλ, καὶ εἶπεν Κὶς πρὸς Σαοὺλ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λαβὲ μετὰ σεαυτοῦ ἓν τῶν παιδαρίων καὶ ἀνάστητε καὶ πορεύθητε καὶ ζητήσατε τὰς ὄνους.	3 καὶ ἀπώλοντο αἱ ὄνοι Κὶς πατρὸς Σαούλ, καὶ εἶπε Κὶς πρὸς Σαοὺλ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ· λαβὲ μετὰ σεαυτοῦ ἓν τῶν παιδαρίων καὶ ἀνάστητε καὶ πορεύθητε καὶ ζητήσατε τὰς ὄνους.

5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let’s return; lest my father leave caring for the donkeys, and take thought for us.

5 αὐτῶν ἐλθόντων εἰς τὴν Σὶφ καὶ Σαοὺλ εἶπεν τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ τῷ μετ’ αὐτοῦ δεῦρο καὶ ἀναστρέψωμεν, μὴ ἀνεὶς ὁ πατήρ μου τὰς ὄνους φροντίζῃ περὶ ἡμῶν.	5 αὐτῶν δὲ ἐλθόντων εἰς τὴν Σίφ, καὶ Σαοὺλ εἶπε τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ τῷ μετ’ αὐτοῦ· δεῦρο καὶ ἀποστρέψωμεν, μὴ ἀνεὶς ὁ πατήρ μου τὰς ὄνους φροντίζῃ τὰ περὶ ἡμῶν·

6 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ παιδάριον ἰδοὺ δὴ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ, καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἔνδοξος, πᾶν, ὃ ἐὰν λαλήσῃ, παραγινόμενον παρέσται· καὶ νῦν πορευθῶμεν, ὅπως ἀπαγγείλῃ ἡμῖν τὴν ὁδὸν ἡμῶν, ἐφ’ ἣν ἐπορεύθημεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν.	6 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ τὸ παιδάριον· ἰδοὺ δὴ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ, καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἔνδοξος, πᾶν, ὃν ἐὰν λαλήσῃ, παραγινόμενον παρέσται· καὶ νῦν πορευθῶμεν, ὅπως ἀπαγγείλῃ ἡμῖν τὴν ὁδὸν ἡμῶν, ἐφ’ ἣν ἐπορεύθημεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν.
6 And the youth said to him, “Look please! A man of God is in this city, and the man is held in honour; anything, whatever he says, when it comes, it will happen, and now let us go, that he might tell us our expedition on which we have gone forth on it.”	6 And the youth said to him, “Look please! 7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

7 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ τῷ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰδοὺ πορευσόμεθα, καὶ τί οἴσομεν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τοῦ θεοῦ; ὅτι οἱ ἄρτοι ἐκλελοίπασιν ἐκ τῶν ἀγγείων ἡμῶν, καὶ πλεῖον οὐκ ἔστιν μεθ’ ἡμῶν εἰσενεγκεῖν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τοῦ θεοῦ τὸ ὑπάρχον ἡμῖν.	7 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ τῷ μετ’ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἰδοὺ πορευσόμεθα, καὶ τί οἴσομεν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ; ὅτι οἱ ἄρτοι ἐκλελοίπασιν ἐκ τῶν ἀγγείων ἡμῶν, καὶ πλεῖον οὐκ ἔστι μεθ’ ἡμῶν εἰσενεγκεῖν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸ ὑπάρχον ἡμῖν.
7 And Saoul said to his youth with him, “Now look! We will go, and what shall we bring to the man of God? For the bread in our containers is exhausted, and there is nothing more that belongs to us to bring to the man of God.”	7 And Saoul said to his youth with him, “Now look! 8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

9 (Previously in Israēl, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spoke, Come, and let’s go to the seer; for he who is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

9 καὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ τάδε ἔλεγεν ἕκαστος ἐν τῷ πορεύεσθαι ἐπερωτᾶν τὸν θεόν δεῦρο πορευθῶμεν πρὸς τὸν βλέποντα· ὅτι τὸν προφήτην ἐκάλει ὁ λαὸς ἔμπροσθεν ὁ βλέπων.	9 καὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ τάδε ἔλεγεν ἕκαστος ἐν τῷ πορεύεσθαι ἐπερωτᾶν τὸν Θεόν· δεῦρο καὶ πορευθῶμεν πρὸς τὸν βλέποντα· ὅτι τὸν προφήτην ἐκάλει ὁ λαὸς ἔμπροσθεν Ὁ βλέπων.

10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said, come, let’s go. So they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, Is the seer here?

12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came today to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place.

12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τὰ κοράσια αὐτοῖς καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτοῖς ἔστιν, ἰδοὺ κατὰ πρόσωπον ὑμῶν· νῦν διὰ τὴν ἡμέραν ἥκει εἰς τὴν πόλιν, ὅτι θυσία σήμερον τῷ λαῷ ἐν Βαμά·	12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τὰ κοράσια αὐτοῖς καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτοῖς· ἐστιν, ἰδοὺ κατὰ πρόσωπον ὑμῶν· νῦν διὰ τὴν ἡμέραν ἥκει εἰς τὴν πόλιν, ὅτι θυσία σήμερον τῷ λαῷ ἐν Βαμᾷ·
12 And the girls answered them and say to them, “Look! He is in front of you! 13 As soon as you be come into the city, you shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat; for the people won’t eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time you shall find him.

13 ὡς ἄν εἰσέλθητε τὴν πόλιν, οὕτως εὑρήσετε αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ πόλει πρὶν ἀναβῆναι αὐτὸν εἰς Βαμὰ τοῦ φαγεῖν, ὅτι οὐ μὴ φάγῃ ὁ λαὸς ἕως τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτόν, ὅτι οὗτος εὐλογεῖ τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐσθίουσιν οἱ ξένοι· καὶ νῦν ἀνάβητε, ὅτι διὰ τὴν ἡμέραν εὑρήσετε αὐτόν.	13 ὡς ἄν εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν πόλιν, οὕτως εὑρήσετε αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ πόλει πρὶν ἀναβῆναι αὐτὸν εἰς Βαμᾶ τοῦ φαγεῖν· ὅτι οὐ μὴ φάγῃ ὁ λαὸς ἕως τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτόν, ὅτι οὗτος εὐλογεῖ τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐσθίουσιν οἱ ξένοι· καὶ νῦν ἀνάβητε, ὅτι διὰ τὴν ἡμέραν εὑρήσετε αὐτόν.

14 And they went up into the city; and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

15 Now Yahweh had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

16 Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be captain over my people Israēl, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked on my people, because their cry is come to me.

16 ὡς ὁ καιρὸς αὔριον ἀποστελῶ πρὸς σὲ ἄνδρα ἐκ γῆς Βενιαμίν, καὶ χρίσεις αὐτὸν εἰς ἄρχοντα ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν μου Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σώσει τὸν λαόν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ἀλλοφύλων· ὅτι ἐπέβλεψα ἐπὶ τὴν ταπείνωσιν τοῦ λαοῦ μου, ὅτι ἦλθεν βοὴ αὐτῶν πρός με.	16 ὡς ὁ καιρός, αὔριον ἀποστελῶ πρός σε ἄνδρα ἐκ γῆς Βενιαμίν, καὶ χρίσεις αὐτὸν εἰς ἄρχοντα ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν μου Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σώσει τὸν λαόν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ἀλλοφύλων· ὅτι ἐπέβλεψα ἐπὶ τὴν ταπείνωσιν τοῦ λαοῦ μου, ὅτι ἦλθε βοὴ αὐτῶν πρός με.

17 And when Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, Behold the man whom I spoke to you of! this same shall reign over my people.

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, please, where the seer’s house is.

19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me to the high place; for you shall eat with me today, and tomorrow I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart.

19 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Σαμουὴλ τῷ Σαοὺλ καὶ εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰμι αὐτός· ἀνάβηθι ἔμπροσθέν μου εἰς Βαμὰ καὶ φάγε μετ’ ἐμοῦ σήμερον, καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ σὲ πρωῒ καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου ἀπαγγελῶ σοι·	19 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Σαμουὴλ τῷ Σαοὺλ καὶ εἶπε· ἐγώ εἰμι αὐτός· ἀνάβηθι ἔμπροσθέν μου εἰς Βαμᾶ καὶ φάγε μετ’ ἐμοῦ σήμερον, καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ σε πρωῒ καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου ἀπαγγελῶ σοι·

20 And as for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israēl? Is it not on you, and on all your father’s house?

21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israēl? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? therefore then speak you so to me?

25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul on the top of the house.
