Saul’s Search
1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiēl, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
1 And there was a man of the sons of Benjamin, and his name was Kis son of Abiēl son of Sared son of Bachir son of Aphek son of a Jeminite man, a mighty man. | 1 And there was a man of the sons of Benjamin, and his name was Kis son of Abiēl son of Jared son of Bachir son of Aphek son of a Jeminite man, a mighty man. |
2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a good; and there wasn’t among the sons of Israēl a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
2 And to this man, a son; and his name was Saoul, a tall, good man. And there was not among the sons of Israēl better than he; above the shoulder and upward he was taller than all the land. | 2 And to this man, a son; and his name was Saoul, a tall, good man. And there was not among the sons of Israēl better than he; above the shoulder and upward he was taller than all the land. |
3 And the donkeys of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.
3 And the donkeys of Kis, Saoul’s father, were lost, and Kis said to his son Saoul, “Take one of the youths with yourself, and arise, and go, and search for the donkeys.” | 3 And the donkeys of Kis, Saoul’s father, were lost, and Kis said to his son Saoul, “Take one of the youths with yourself, and arise, and go, and search for the donkeys.” |
4 And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not; and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
4 And they passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Selcha and did not find them, and they passed through the land of Easakem, and there was nothing, and they passed through the land of Jakim and did not find them. | 4 And they passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Selcha and did not find them, and they passed through the land of Easakem, and there was nothing, and they passed through the land of Jakim and did not find them. |
5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let’s return; lest my father leave caring for the donkeys, and take thought for us.
5 When they came to Siph, then Saoul said to his youth who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest when my father leaves the donkeys he should worry about us.” | 5 When they came to Siph, then Saoul said to his youth who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest when my father leaves the donkeys he should worry about us.” |
6 And he said to him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a honourable man; all that he says comes surely to pass: now let’s go to that place; perhaps he can show us our way that we should go.
6 And the youth said to him, “Look please! A man of God is in this city, and the man is held in honour; anything, whatever he says, when it comes, it will happen, and now let us go, that he might tell us our expedition on which we have gone forth on it.” | 6 And the youth said to him, “Look please! A man of God is in this city, and the man is held in honour; anything, whatever he says, when it comes, it will happen, and now let us go, that he might tell us our expedition on which we have gone forth on it.” |
7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

7 And Saoul said to his youth with him, “Now look! We will go, and what shall we bring to the man of God? For the bread in our containers is exhausted, and there is nothing more that belongs to us to bring to the man of God.” | 7 And Saoul said to his youth with him, “Now look! We will go, and what shall we bring to the man of God? For the bread in our containers is exhausted, and there is nothing more that belongs to us to bring to the man of God.” |
8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
8 And the youth continued to answer Saoul and said, “Look! a quarter of a shekel of silver is found in my hand, and you will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way” | 8 And the youth continued to answer Saoul and said, “Look! a quarter of a shekel of silver is found in my hand, and you will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way” |
9 (Previously in Israēl, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spoke, Come, and let’s go to the seer; for he who is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
9 And previously in Israēl, everyone when going to inquire of God would say this, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for previously the people used to call the prophet, “the seer.” | 9 And previously in Israēl, everyone when going to inquire of God would say this, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for previously the people used to call the prophet, “the seer.” |
10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said, come, let’s go. So they went to the city where the man of God was.

10 And Saoul said to his youth, “The thing is good; come and let us go.” And they went to the city, there where the man of God was. | 10 And Saoul said to his youth, “The thing is good; come and let us go.” And they went to the city, there where the man of God was. |
11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, Is the seer here?

12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came today to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place.
12 And the girls answered them and say to them, “Look! He is in front of you! He has come because of the day to the city, because there is a sacrifice today for the people at Bama; | 12 And the girls answered them and say to them, “Look! He is in front of you! He has come because of the day to the city, because there is a sacrifice today for the people at Bama; |
13 As soon as you be come into the city, you shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat; for the people won’t eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time you shall find him.
13 as soon as you enter the city, thus you will find him in the city before he goes up to Bama to eat, for the people will not eat until he enters, because he blesses the sacrifice, and after these things the foreigners eat, and now go up, for because of the day you will find him.” | 13 as soon as you enter the city, thus you will find him in the city before he goes up to Bama to eat, for the people will not eat until he enters, because he blesses the sacrifice, and after these things the foreigners eat, and now go up, for because of the day you will find him.” |
14 And they went up into the city; and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

God’s Choice for King
15 Now Yahweh had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
15 And one day before Saoul came to him, the Lord uncovered Samouēl’s ear, saying, | 15 And one day before Saoul came to him, the Lord uncovered Samouēl’s ear, saying, |
16 Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be captain over my people Israēl, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked on my people, because their cry is come to me.
16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be ruler over my people Israēl, and he shall save my people out of the hand of allophyles; because I have looked on the humiliation of my people, because their shout has come to me.” | 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be ruler over my people Israēl, and he shall save my people out of the hand of allophyles; because I have looked on the humiliation of my people, because their shout has come to me.” |
17 And when Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, Behold the man whom I spoke to you of! this same shall reign over my people.
17 And Samouēl saw Saoul; and the Lord answered him, “Look! the man about whom I said to you, ‘This one shall rule among my people.’ ” | 17 And Samouēl saw Saoul; and the Lord answered him, “Look! the man about whom I said to you, ‘This one shall rule among my people.’ ” |
18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, please, where the seer’s house is.
18 And Saoul approached Samouēl in the center of the city and said, “Please tell, which is the house of the seer?” | 18 And Saoul approached Samouēl in the center of the city and said, “Please tell, which is the house of the seer?” |
19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me to the high place; for you shall eat with me today, and tomorrow I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart.
19 And Samouēl answered Saoul and said, “I am he; go up before me to Bama, and eat with me today, and in the morning I will send you off and will tell you all that is in your heart. | 19 And Samouēl answered Saoul and said, “I am he; go up before me to Bama, and eat with me today, and in the morning I will send you off and will tell you all that is in your heart. |
20 And as for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israēl? Is it not on you, and on all your father’s house?

22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among those who were bidden, which were about 30 persons.

24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and what was on it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold what is left! set it before you, and eat; for to this time has it been kept for you since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
