Chapter 10
Old Greek | Theodotion |

1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to Daniēl, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long; and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.
1 In the first year of King Cyrus of the Persians a word was revealed to Daniēl, whose name was called Baltasar. And the word was genuine, and great power and understanding was given to him by the vision. | 1 In the third year of Cyrus king of the Persians a thing was revealed to Daniēl, whose name was called Baltasar; and the thing was true, and great power and understanding in the vision was given to him. |
2 In those days I Daniēl was mourning three full weeks.
2 In those days I, Daniēl, was in mourning. | 2 In those days I Daniēl was mourning three full weeks. |
3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
3 I had not eaten food of desire, and no meat or wine had entered my mouth. I had not anointed myself with oil until I completed three weeks of days. | 3 I ate no pleasant bread, and no flesh or wine entered into my mouth, neither did I anoint myself with oil, until three whole weeks were accomplished. |
4 And in the 24th day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;
4 And it happened on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, and as I was on the bank of the great river, which is the Tigris, | 4 On the 24th day of the first month, I was near the great river, which is Tigris Eddekel. |
5 Then I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz.
5 and I raised my eyes and saw, and lo, there was one person clothed in linen and girded with gold around the waist and a light from his middle. | 5 And I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a man clothed in linen, and his loins were girt with gold of Ōphaz. |
6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished bronze, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
6 And his body was like tharsis, and his face like an appearance of lightning, and his eyes like torches of fire, and his arms and feet like dazzling bronze, and the sound of his talking like the sound of a throng. | 6 and his body was as Tharsis, and his face was a the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his legs as the appearance of shining copper-alloy, and the voice of his words as the voice of a multitude. |
7 And I Daniēl alone saw the vision; for the men who were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell on them, so that they fled to hide themselves.
7 And I, Daniēl, saw this great vision, and the persons who were with me saw this vision, and a mighty fear fell on them, and they ran away in haste. | 7 And I Daniēl only saw the vision; and the men who were with me saw not the vision; but a great amazement fell on them, and they fled in fear. |
8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me; for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.
8 And I remained alone, and I saw this great vision. And no strength remained in me, and I saw a spirit turned toward me in order to corrupt, and I did not prevail. | 8 So I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there was no strength left in me, and my glory was turned into corruption, and I retained no strength. |
9 Yet heard I the voice of his words; and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
9 And as I heard the sound of his talking, I fell on my face to the ground. | 9 Yet I heard the voice of his words; and when I heard him I was pricked in the heart, and I fell with my face to the earth. |
10 And, behold, a hand touched me, which set me on my knees and on the palms of my hands.
10 And lo, he reached out a hand to me and roused me on my knees to the soles of my feet. | 10 And, behold, a hand touched me, and it raised me on my knees. |
11 And he said to me, Oh Daniēl, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for to you am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling.
11
καὶ
μοι
εἶ·
οἷς
ἐγὼ
ἐπὶ
σέ,
καὶ
ἐπὶ
τοῦ
σου,
γὰρ
ἐπὶ
σέ.
11 And he said to me, “Daniēl, you are a person shown mercy. Ponder the ordinances that I am going to speak to you. And stand in your place, for I have just been sent to you.” And while he spoke this decree to me, I stood trembling. | 11 And he said to me, Oh Daniēl, man greatly beloved, understand the words which I speak to you, and stand upright; for I am now sent to you. And when he had spoken to me this word, I stood trembling. |
12 Then said he to me, Don’t fear, Daniēl; for from the first day that you did set your heart to understand, and to chasten yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I am come for your words.
12 And he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniēl, for from the first day that you gave your mind to gain knowledge and to be humble before your Lord, your word has been heeded, and I have come because of your word. | 12 And he said to me, Don’t fear, Daniēl; for from the first day that you did set your heart to understand, and to afflict yourself before the Lord your God, they words were heard, and I am come because of your words. |
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me 21 days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
13 And the general of the king of the Persians opposed me 21 days. Loc, one of the holy angels approached to help me, and I left him there with the general of the king of the Persians.” | 13 But the prince of the kingdom of the Persians withstood me 21 days; and behold, Michael, one of the princes, came to help me; and I left him there with the chief of the kingdom of the Persians. |
14 Now I am come to make you understand what shall befall your people in the latter days; for yet the vision is for many days.
14 And he said to me, “I have come to explain to you that it will come on your people at the end of days, for a vision is yet for days.” | 14 and I have come to inform you of all that shall befall your people in the last days; for the vision is yet for many days. |
15 And when he had spoken such words to me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.
15 And as he spoke with me these decrees, I gave my face toward the ground and was silent. | 15 And when he had spoken with me according to these words, I turned my face to the ground, and was pricked in the heart. |
16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him who stood before me, Oh my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned on me, and I have retained no strength.
16 And lo, as it were a likeness of a human hand touched my lips, and I opened my mouth, and I spoke and said to the one who stood in front of me, “Sir, as the vision turned to me, to my flank, there was not even strength in me. | 16 And, behold, as it were the likeness of a son of man touched my lips; and I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him who stood before me, Oh my lord, at the sight of you my bowels were turned within me, and I had no strength. |
17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? For as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.
17
καὶ
πῶς
ὁ
τοῦ
17 And how will the servant be able to talk with his lord?” And as for me, I became weak, and no strength stayed in me, and no breath remained in me. | 17 And how shall your servant be able, Oh my lord, to speak with this my lord? And as for me, from henceforth strength won’t remain in me, and there is no breath left in me. |
18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,
18 And a specter of a human continued and touched me and gave me strength. | 18 And there touched me again as it were the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, |
19 And said, Oh man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be to you, be strong, yes, be strong. And when he had spoken to me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.
19
καὶ
μοι
εἶ,
μὴ
καὶ
19 And he said to me, “You are a person shown mercy. Do not fear; be well. Be courageous and strong!” And when he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for he has strengthened me.” | 19 and said to me, Don’t fear, man greatly beloved: peace be to you, quit yourself like a man, and be strong. And when he had spoken with me, I received strength, and said, Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me. |
20 Then said he, Know you therefore I come to you? And now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
20
καὶ
πρός
με
τί
20 And he said to me, “Do you understand why I have come to you? And now I will return to contend with the general of the king of the Persians. And I was leaving, and lo, the commander of the Greeks was entering. | 20 And he said, Know you, why I am come to you? And now I will return to fight with the prince of the Persians; and I was going in, and the prince of the Greeks came. |
21 But I will show you what is noted in the scripture of truth; and there is none that holds with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
21 And the more I will explain to you the chief things that are in the register of truth. And there was no one with me who helped concerning these things except Michael, the mighty angel.” | 21 But I will tell you what is ordained in the scripture of truth; and there is no one that holds with me in these matters but Michael your prince. |
