Chapter 11
Old Greek | Theodotion |
---|
1 Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.
1 In the first year of King Cyrus, he told me to be strong and be courageous. | 1 And I in the first year of Cyrus stood to strengthen and confirm him. |
2 And now will I show you the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all; and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.

καὶ
νῦν
τὴν
σοι.
2 “And now I have come to explain the truth to you. Lo, three kings have risen in opposition in Persia. And the fourth will be rich with great riches beyond all, and when he is empowered by his riches, he will rise up against every king of the Greeks. | 2 And now I will tell you the truth. Behold, there shall yet rise up three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be very far richer than all; and after that he is master of his wealth, he shall rise up against all the kingdoms of the Greeks. |
3 And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.
3 And a mighty king will arise, and he will be lord over a great dominion and will act just as he wishes. | 3 An there shall rise up a mighty king, and he shall be lord of a great empire, and shall do according to his will. |
4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled; for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
4 And when he rises, his kingdom will be broken and distributed toward the four winds of heaven, not according to his strength nor according to his dominion which he dominated, for his kingdom will be removed and he will teach others these things. | 4 And when his kingdom shall stand up, it shall be broken, and shall be divided to the four winds of heaven; but not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled over; for his kingdom shall be plucked up, and given to others beside these. |
5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.
5 “And the king of Egypt will grow strong, and one of the sovereigns will overpower him and will dominate a large domain. | 5 And the king of the south shall be strong; and one of their princes shall prevail against him, and shall obtain a great dominion. |
6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement; but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm; but she shall be given up, and they who brought her, and he who fathered her, and he who strengthened her in these times.
6 And at the completion of the years he will lead them, and the king of Egypt will enter the northern kingdom to ratify an agreement. And he will never prevail, because his arm will not establish strength. And the arm of him and of those associating with him will grow numb, and he will continue for a season. | 6 And after his years they shall associate; and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north, to make agreements with him; but she shall not retain power of arm; neither shall his seed stand; and she shall be delivered up, and they who brought her, and the maiden, and he who strengthened her in these times. |
7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail.
7 “And a plant from his root will arise against himself. And the king of the north will come on his idleness with his strength, and he will cause turmoil and will prevail. | 7 But out of the flower of her root there shall arise one on his place, and shall come against the army, and shall enter into the strongholds of the king of the north, and shall fight against them, and prevail. |
8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.
8 And he will overthrow their gods with their cast images and their crowds with their precious vessels. They will carry off the silver and gold to Egypt in captivity, and the king of the north will have a year. | 8 Yes, he shall carry with a body of captives into Egypt their gods with their molten images, and all their precious vessels of silver and gold; and he shall last longer than the king of the north. |
9 So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.
9 And he will enter into the kingdom of Egypt for days, and he will return to his own land. | 9 And he shall enter into the kingdom of the king of the south, and shall return to his own land. |
10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces; and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then he shall return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.
10
καὶ
ὁ
10 “And his son will both be irritated and will gather a gathering of a great crowd. And he will march against it, ravaging. He will pass through and will return and will be greatly provoked. | 10 And his sons shall gather a multitude among many; and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through, and he shall rest, and collect his strength. |
11 And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north; and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
11 And the king of Egypt will be inflamed and will do battle against the king of the north, and the gathering will be given into his hands. | 11 And the king of the south shall be greatly enraged, and shall come forth, and shall war with the king of the north; and he shall raise a great multitude; but the multitude shall be delivered into his hand. |
12 And when he has taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands; but he shall not be strengthened by it.
12 And he will carry off the gathering, and his heart will be exalted, and he will trouble many, and he will never be afraid. | 12 And he shall take the multitude, and his heart shall be exalted; and he shall cast down many thousands; but he shall not prevail. |
13 For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
13 And the king of the north will return and will gather [from the city] a gathering, greater than the previous, according to the completion of the time of the year. And he will advance into ita with a large crowd and many goods. AI.e. Gathering | 13 For the king of the north shall return, and bring a multitude greater than the former, and at the end of the times of years an invading army shall come with a great force, and with much substance. |
14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of your people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
14 “And in those times thoughts will rise against the king of Egypt. And he will rebuild the fallena of your nation, and he will rise in order to restore prophecy, and they will take offense. | 14 And in those times many shall rise up against the king of the south; and the children of the spoilers of your people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; and they shall fail. |
15 So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities; and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.
15 And the king of the north will attack and will turn his spears and will take the fortified city. And the arms of the king of Egypt will not stand with his mighty ones, and he will not have the strength to oppose him. | 15 And the king of the north shall come in, and cast up a mound, and take strong cities; and the arms of the king of the south shall withstand, and his chosen ones shall rise up, but there shall be no strength to stand. |
16 But he who comes against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him; and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.
16 And he who comes on him will act according to his will, and no one will oppose him. And heb will stand in cthe land of desiresc, and everything will be completed by his hands. | 16 And he who comes in against him shall do according to his will, and there is no one to stand before him; and he shall stand in the land of beauty, and it shall be consumed by his hand. |
17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus he shall do; and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her; but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
17 And he will give his face to attack all of his work with force, and heb will make an agreement with him. And in order to corrupt him, he will give him a daughter of man, and she will not stand and will not be. | 17 And he shall set his face to come in with the force of his whole kingdom, and shall cause everything to prosper with him; and he shall give him the daughter of women to corrupt her; but she shall not continue, neither be on his side. |
18 After this he shall turn his face to the isles, and shall take many; but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn on him.
18 And he will give his face to the sea and will take many. And he will return wrath for their insult, with an oath, according to his insult. | 18 And he shall turn his face to the islands, and shall take many, and cause princes to cease from their reproach: nevertheless his own reproach shall return to him. |
19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land; but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
19 He will turn his face in order to strengthen his country, and he will stumble and will fall and will not be found. | 19 Then he shall turn back his face to the strength of his own land; but he shall become weak, and fall, and not be found. |
20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom; but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.
20 “And a royal plant will arise from his root for rising up, a man striking the honor of the king. And in the last days he will be broken, and not in anger or in battle. | 20 And there shall arise out of his root one that shall cause a plant of the kingdom to pass over his place, earning kingly glory; and yet in those days he shall be broken, yet not openly, nor in war. |
21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom; but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
21 And a contemptible person will arise in his place, and the royal honor will not be granted to him, and he will come without warning, and the king will prevail by his lot. | 21 One shall stand on his place, who has been set a nothing, and they haven’t put on him the honour of the kingdom; but he shall come in prosperously, and obtain the kingdom by deceitful ways. |
22 And with the arms of a flood they shall be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yes, also the prince of the covenant.
22 And he will break the broken arms before his face. | 22 And the arms of him who overflows shall be washed away as with a flood from before him, and shall be broken, and so shall be the head of the covenant. |
23 And after the league made with him he shall work craftily; for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
23 And he will perpetrate a lie with the covenant and the people drawn up with him and come against a strong nation with a very small nation. | 23 And because of the leagues made with him he shall work deceit; and he shall come up, and overpower them with a small nation. |
24 He shall enter peaceably even on the fattest places of the province; and he shall do what his fathers haven’t done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yes, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.
24 Without warning he will desolate a city and will do what none of his ancestors nor his ancestors’ ancestors had ever done; he will give plunder and spoil and money to them. And he will take thought against the strong city, and his deliberations will be in vain. | 24 And he shall enter with prosperity, and that into fertile districts; and he shall do what his fathers and his fathers’ fathers haven’t done; he shall scatter among them plunder, and spoils, and wealth; and he shall devise plans against Egypt, even for a time. |
25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand; for they shall forecast devices against him.
25 And his power and his heart will be roused against the king of Egypt with a great crowd, and the king of Egypt will be provoked into battle with an exceedingly strong crowd. And he will not succeed, because a plot will be devised against him. | 25 And his strength and his heart shall be stirred up against the king of the south with a great force; and the king of the south shall engage in war with a great and very strong force; but his forces shall not stand, for they shall devise plans against him. |
26 Yes, they who feed of the portion of his food shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow; and many shall fall down slain.
26 And his worries will consume him and will bring him back. And he will depart and will carry off, and many casualties will fall. | 26 and they shall eat his provisions, and shall crush him, and he shall carry away armies as with a flood, and many shall fall down slain. |
27 And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper; for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
27 And the two kings will dine alone [in the same place] and [will eat] at one table and will speak falsely. And they will not prosper, for there is yet a consummation at the appointed time. | 27 And as for both the kings, their hearts are set on mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper; for yet the end is for a fixed time. |
28 Then he shall return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.
28 And he will return to his country with much money, and his heart will be against the covenant of the holy one. He will act and will return to his country | 28 And he shall return to his land with much substance; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall perform great deeds, and return to his own land. |
29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.

29 at a set time. “And he will enter into Egypt, and as the first so the last will not be. | 29 At the set time he shall return, and shall come into the south, but the last expedition shall not be as the first. |
30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him; therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant; so he shall do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with those who forsake the holy covenant.
30 And the Romans will come and will expel him and rebuke him. And he will turn back [and will be angered] against the covenant of the holy one. And he will take action and will turn back and will be minded against them, aI.e. Ruins bI.e. The king of the north cI.e. The land he wanted because they abandoned the covenant of the holy one. | 30 For the Citians issuing forth shall come against him, and he shall be brought low, and shall return, and shall be incensed against the holy covenant; and he shall do thus, and shall return, and have intelligence with those who have forsaken the holy covenant. |
31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate.
31 And arms from him will rise and will defile the sanctuary of fear. And they will remove the sacrifice and will give an abomination of desolation. | 31 And seeds shall spring up out of him, and they shall profane the sanctuary of strength, and they shall remove the perpetual sacrifice, and make the abomination desolate. |
32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt by flatteries; but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
32 And with sins against the covenant they will defile by means of a distributed portion, and the common people who know these things will stand firm and will take action. | 32 And the transgressors shall bring about a covenant by deceitful ways; but a people knowing their God shall prevail, and do valiantly. |
33 And they who understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.
33 And thoughtful ones of the nation will understand for many, and they will stumble by sword and will become old by it and by captivity, and they will be soiled by pillaging for days. | 33 And the intelligent of the people shall understand much: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, and by captivity, and by spoil of many days. |
34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be helped with a little help; but many shall cling to them with flatteries.
34 And when they are broken, they will gather a little strength. And many will be gathered to them [—in the city also many—] as by an allotment. | 34 And when they are weak they shall be helped with a little help; but many shall attach themselves to them with treachery. |
35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
35 And some of the intelligent will be minded to purify themselves and be chosen and be purified until the time of consummation, for there is yet a time. “In that hour | 35 And some of those who understand shall fall, to try them as with fire, and to test them, and that they may be manifested at the time of the end, for the matter is yet for a set time. |
36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished; for that that is determined shall be done.
36 the king will act according to his will. And he will be enraged and will be exalted over every god and will speak strange things against the God of gods. And he will succeed until the wrath is completed, for completion pertaining to him is coming. | 36 And he shall do according to his will, and the king shall exalt and magnify himself against every god, and shall speak great swelling words, and shall prosper until the indignation shall be accomplished; for it is coming to an end. |
37 Neither he shall regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall magnify himself above all.
37 And he will in no way have regard for the gods of his ancestors, and he will give no thought to the desire of a woman. He will be exalted in everything, [and strong nations will be subject to him]. | 37 And he shall not regard any gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, neither shall he regard any deity; for he shall magnify himself above all. |
38 But in his estate he shall honour the God of forces; and a god whom his fathers didn’t know he shall honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

38 And he will honor a strong god in his place; even a god whom his ancestors did not know he will honor with gold and silver and valuable stone. And with desirable things | 38 And he shall honour the god of forces on his place; and a god whom his fathers didn’t know he shall honour with gold, and silver, and precious stones, and desirable things. |
39 Thus he shall do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
39 [of cities] he will act and will come into a strong fortress. With a foreign god whom he acknowledges he will increase honor, and he will rule over it far and wide, and he will divide the area freely. | 39 And he shall do thus in the strong places of refuge with a strange god, and shall increase his glory; and he shall subject many to them, and shall distribute the land in gifts. |
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him; and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
40 “And according to the time of consummation the king of Egypt will lock horns with him. And the king of the north will be angry with him with chariots and with many horses and with many ships. | 40 And at the end of the time he shall conflict with the king of the south; and the king of the north shall come against him with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and they shall enter into the land; and he shall break in pieces, and pass on. |
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
41 And he will advance into my country, | 41 and he shall enter into the land of beauty, and many shall fail; but these shall escape out of his hand, Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. |
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also on the countries; and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
42 and in the country of Egypt And there will be no one that is delivered in it. | 42 And he shall stretch forth his hand over the land; and the land of Egypt shall not escape. |
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
43 And he will seize the place of gold and the place of silver and all the desire of Egypt, and Libyans and Ethiopians will be in his crowd. | 43 And he shall have the mastery over the secret treasures of gold and silver, and over all the desirable possessions of Egypt, and of the Libyans and Ethiopians in their strongholds. |
44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
44 And a rumor from the east and north will alarm him, and he will go out with mighty fury both to annihilate by sword and to kill many. | 44 But rumors and anxieties out of the east and from the north shall trouble him; and he shall come with great wrath to destroy many. |
45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
45 And he will set up his tent then between the seas and the mountain of the will of the holy one. And the hour of his consummation will come, and there will be no one who helps him. | 45 And he shall camp the tent of his palace between the seas in the holy mountain of beauty; but he shall come to his portion, and there is none to deliver him. |
