The Golden Calf
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what is become of him.”
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered together before Aarōn and say to him, “Get up, and make us gods who will go before us. For this Moses, the man who brought us out of Aigypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.” | 1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered together before Aarōn and say to him, “Get up, and make us gods who will go before us. For this Moses, the man who brought us out of Aigypt’s land, we don’t know what has happened to him.” |
2 And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me.”
2 And Aarōn says to them, “Remove the gold earrings in the ears of your wives and daughters, and bring to me.” | 2 And Aarōn says to them, “Remove the gold earrings in the ears of your wives and daughters, and bring to me.” |
3 And all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.
3 And all the people removed the gold earrings in their ears and brought to Aarōn. | 3 And all the people removed the gold earrings in their ears and brought to Aarōn. |
4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, after he had made it a molten calf; and they said, “These are your gods, Oh Israēl, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
4 And he received from their hands and shaped them with an engraving tool and made them a molten calf and said, “These are your gods, Israēl, who brought you up from Aigypt’s land.” | 4 And he received from their hands and shaped them with an engraving tool and made them a molten calf and said, “These are your gods, Israēl, who brought you up from Aigypt’s land.” |
5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to Yahweh.”
5 And when Aarōn saw, he built an altar before it, and Aarōn proclaimed, saying, “The Lord’s feast is tomorrow.” | 5 And when Aarōn saw, he built an altar before it, and Aarōn proclaimed, saying, “The Lord’s feast is tomorrow.” |
6 And they rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
6 And after arising on the next day, he brought up whole burnt offerings and offered a sacrifice of deliverance, and the people sat down to eat and drink, and they arose to play. | 6 And after arising on the next day, he brought up whole burnt offerings and offered a sacrifice of deliverance, and the people sat down to eat and drink, and they arose to play. |
7 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go, get down; for your people, which you brought out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.
7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Go! Descend quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Aigypt’s land have acted lawlessly. | 7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Go! Descend quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Aigypt’s land have acted lawlessly. |
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, ‘These are your gods, Oh Israēl, which have brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’ ”
8 They quickly turned away from the way that you commanded them. They made for themselves a calf and did obeisance to it and offered sacrifices to it, and they said, These are your gods, Israēl, who brought you up from Aigypt’s land. | 8 They quickly turned away from the way that you commanded them. They made for themselves a calf and did obeisance to it and offered sacrifices to it, and they said, |
9 And Yahweh said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
9 N/A | 9 ‛These are your gods, Israēl, who brought you up from Aigypt’s land.’ |
10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.”
10 And now allow me, and, after being enraged with anger against them, I will get rid of them and make you into a great nation.” | 10 And now allow me, and, after being enraged with anger against them, I will get rid of them and make you into a great nation.” |
Moses’ Entreaty
11 And Moses besought Yahweh his God, and said, “Yahweh, why does your wrath wax hot against your people, which you have brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
11 And Moses prayed before the Lord his God and said, “Why, Lord, are you enraged with anger against your people whom you brought out of Aigypt’s land with great power and with your uplifted arm? | 11 And Moses prayed before the Lord his God and said, “Why, Lord, are you enraged with anger against your people whom you brought out of Aigypt’s land with great power and with your uplifted arm? |
12 Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against your people.

12 Perhaps the Aigyptians should speak, saying, ‛With an evil intention, he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the earth,’ Refrain from the anger of your rage, and become propitious on the evil of your people, | 12 Perhaps the Aigyptians should speak, saying, ‛With an evil intention, he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the earth,’ Refrain from the anger of your rage, and become propitious on the evil of your people, |
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israēl, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give to your seed, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”
13 remembering Abraham and Isaac and Jakōb, your servants, to whom you swore by invoking yourself and spoke to them, saying, ‛I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the sky in number, and all this land that you said you would give to their descendants, and they will possess it forever.’ ” | 13 remembering Abraham and Isaac and Jakōb, your servants, to whom you swore by invoking yourself and spoke to them, saying, ‛I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the sky in number, and all this land that you said you would give to their descendants, and they will possess it forever.’ ” |
14 And Yahweh repented of the evil which he thought to do to his people.
14 And the Lord was propitiated concerning the damage that he said he would do to his people. | 14 And the Lord was propitiated concerning the damage that he said he would do to his people. |
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand. The tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of witness were in his hands, stone tablets written on both their sides; they were written on this side and on that side. | 15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of witness were in his hands, stone tablets written on both their sides; they were written on this side and on that side. |
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraven on the tables.
16 And the tablets were God’s work, and the writing, God’s writing, was carved on the tablets. | 16 And the tablets were God’s work, and the writing, God’s writing, was carved on the tablets. |
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”
17 And when Jēsous heard the noise of the people shouting, he says to Moses, “The noise of war is in the camp!” | 17 And when Jēsous heard the noise of the people shouting, he says to Moses, “The noise of war is in the camp!” |
18 And he said, “It is not the voice of those who shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing do I hear.”
18 And he says, “It is not the noise of those leading by force or the noise of those leading in a rout, but the noise of those leading in wine I hear.” | 18 And he says, “It is not the noise of those leading by force or the noise of those leading in a rout, but the noise of those leading in wine I hear.” |
Moses’ Anger
19 And it happened, as soon as he came near to the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing; and Moses’ anger grew hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mount.
19 Now when he was approaching toward the camp, he sees the calf and the dancing, and being enraged with anger, Moses threw the two tablets from his hands and shattered them beneath the mountain. | 19 Now when he was approaching toward the camp, he sees the calf and the dancing, and being enraged with anger, Moses threw the two tablets from his hands and shattered them beneath the mountain. |
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and threw it on the water, and made the sons of Israēl drink of it.
20 And after he took the calf that they made, he burned it with fire and ground it fine and scattered it on the water and made the sons of Israēl drink it. | 20 And after he took the calf that they made, he burned it with fire and ground it fine and scattered it on the water and made the sons of Israēl drink it. |
21 And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought so great a sin on them?”
21 And Moses said to Aarōn, “What did this people do to you that you brought great sin on them?” | 21 And Moses said to Aarōn, “What did this people do to you that you brought great sin on them?” |
22 And Aaron said, “Don’t let the anger of my lord wax hot: you know the people, that they are set on mischief.
22 And Aarōn said to Moses, “Don’t be enraged, lord. For you know the impulsiveness of this people. | 22 And Aarōn said to Moses, “Don’t be enraged, lord. For you know the impulsiveness of this people. |
23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what is become of him.’
23 For they say to me, ‛Make gods for us who will go before us. For this Moses, the man who brought us out of Aigypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ | 23 For they say to me, ‛Make gods for us who will go before us. For this Moses, the man who brought us out of Aigypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ |
24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.”

25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked to their shame among their enemies:)

27 And he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, ‘Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.’ ”
27 And he says to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israēl, says, ‛Each one, put his own sword on his thigh, and go through, and return from gate to gate through the camp, and each one kill his brother, and each one his neighbour, and each one the one nearest to him.’ ” | 27 And he says to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israēl, says, ‛Each one, put his own sword on his thigh, and go through, and return from gate to gate through the camp, and each one kill his brother, and each one his neighbour, and each one the one nearest to him.’ ” |
28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about 3000 men.

29 And Moses said to them, “You filled your hands today for the Lord, each one by the son or by the brother, to give a blessing on you.” | 29 And Moses said to them, “You filled your hands today for the Lord, each one by the son or by the brother, to give a blessing on you.” |
30 And it happened on the next day, that Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to Yahweh; perhaps I shall make an atonement for your sin.”
30 And it happened on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin, and now I will go up to God in order that I might make atonement concerning your sin.” | 30 And it happened on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin, and now I will go up to God in order that I might make atonement concerning your sin.” |
31 And Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
31 Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, this people has sinned a great sin and made for themselves gold gods. | 31 Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, this people has sinned a great sin and made for themselves gold gods. |
32 Yet now, if you will forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, please, out of your book which you have written.”
32 And now, if you shall forgive them the sin, forgive. But if not, erase me out of your book that you have written.” | 32 And now, if you shall forgive them the sin, forgive. But if not, erase me out of your book that you have written.” |
33 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
33 And the Lord said to Moses, “If anyone has sinned before me, I will erase him out of my book. | 33 And the Lord said to Moses, “If anyone has sinned before me, I will erase him out of my book. |
34 Therefore now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you: behold, my Angel shall go before you: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin on them.”
34 But go now, descend and lead this people to the place that I told you. Look! my angel will go before your face. But on whatever day I concern myself, I will bring on them their sin.” | 34 But go now, descend and lead this people to the place that I told you. Look! my angel will go before your face. But on whatever day I concern myself, I will bring on them their sin.” |
35 And Yahweh plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.
35 And the Lord struck the people for the making of the calf that Aarōn made. | 35 And the Lord struck the people for the making of the calf that Aarōn made. |
