Punishment for Wickedness Foretold
1 Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,
1 And a word of the Lord came to me, saying, | 1 And a word of the Lord came to me, saying, |
2 Also, you son of man, thus says Adonai Yahweh to the land of Israēl; An end, the end is come on the four corners of the land.
2 And you, son of man, say, Thus says the Lord to the land of Israēl: An end has come. The end has come on the four corners of the land. | 2 And you, son of man, say, Thus says the Lord to the land of Israēl: An end has come. The end has come on the four corners of the land. |
3 [LXX 7:7] Now is the end come on you, and I will send my anger on you, and will judge you according to your ways, and will recompense on you all your abominations.
3 [LXX 7:7] Now the end is on you, and I will send it on you, and I will punish you for your ways, and I will give all your abominations against you. | 3 [LXX 7:7] Now the end is on you, and I will send it on you, and I will punish you for your ways, and I will give all your abominations against you. |
4 [LXX 7:8] And my eye shall not spare you, neither will I have pity; but I will recompense your ways on you, and your abominations shall be in the midst of you; and you shall know that I am Yahweh.
4 [LXX 7:8] My eye will not spare, nor will I show mercy, because I will give your way against you and your abominations shall be in your midst. And you shall recognize that I am the Lord. | 4 [LXX 7:8] My eye will not spare, nor will I show mercy, because I will give your way against you and your abominations shall be in your midst. And you shall recognize that I am the Lord; |
5 [LXX 7:9] Thus says Adonai Yahweh; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come.
5 [LXX 7:9] because this is what the Lord says. | 5 [LXX 7:9] because this is what the Lord says. |
6 [LXX 7:3] An end is come, the end is come: it watches for you; behold, it is come.
6 [LXX 7:3] The end has come | 6 [LXX 7:3] The end has come |
7 [LXX 7:4] The morning is come to you, Oh you who dwells in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.
7 [LXX 7:4] upon you, the inhabitant of the land. The time has arrived; the day has approached not with noise or with birth-pangs. | 7 [LXX 7:4] upon you, the inhabitant of the land. The time has arrived; the day has approached not with noise or with birth-pangs. |
8 [LXX 7:5] Now will I shortly pour out my fury on you, and accomplish my anger on you; and I will judge you according to your ways, and will recompense you for all your abominations.
8 [LXX 7:5] Now nearby I will pour out my anger on you and will expend my wrath against you, and I will judge you by your ways and will give all your abominations against you. | 8 [LXX 7:5] Now nearby I will pour out my anger on you and will expend my wrath against you, and I will judge you by your ways and will give all your abominations against you. |
9 And my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense you according to your ways and your abominations that are in the midst of you; and you shall know that I am Yahweh that smites.
9 My eye will not relent, nor will I have mercy, for I will give your ways against you and your abominations shall be in your midst, and you shall recognize that it is I, the Lord, who strike. | 9 My eye will not relent, nor will I have mercy, for I will give your ways against you and your abominations shall be in your midst, and you shall recognize that it is I, the Lord, who strike. |
10 Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod has blossomed, pride has budded.
10 Look! the end has come. Look! a day of the Lord. Even if the rod has blossomed, the insolence has arisen. | 10 Look! the end has come. Look! a day of the Lord. Even if the rod has blossomed, the insolence has arisen. |
11 Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be wailing for them.
11 And it shall shatter a support of a lawless one and not with noise or with haste. | 11 And it shall shatter a support of a lawless one and not with noise or with haste. |
12 The time is come, the day draws near: don’t let the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is on all the multitude of it.
12 The time has come, look! the day; don’t let the buyer rejoice, and don’t let the seller mourn. | 12 The time has come, look! the day; don’t let the buyer rejoice, and don’t let the seller mourn. |
13 For the seller shall not return to what is sold, although they were yet alive; for the vision is touching the whole multitude of it, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
13 because the buyer shall never return to the seller, and a man shall not gain control of his life by his eye. | 13 because the buyer shall never return to the seller, and a man shall not gain control of his life by his eye. |
14 They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goes to the battle; for my wrath is on all the multitude of it.
14 Trumpet with a trumpet, and judge all things together. | 14 Trumpet with a trumpet, and judge all things together. |
15 The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he who is in the field shall die with the sword; and he who is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him.
15 War by the sword is from outside, and famine and death from inside. The one on the plain shall come to an end by the sword, while those in the city famine and death shall finish off. | 15 War by the sword is from outside, and famine and death from inside. The one on the plain shall come to an end by the sword, while those in the city famine and death shall finish off. |
16 But they who escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, everyone for his iniquity.
16 And the survivors of them shall survive and shall be on the mountains; I will kill them all, each in his injustices. | 16 And the survivors of them shall survive and shall be on the mountains; I will kill them all, each in his injustices. |
17 All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water.
17 All hands shall grow feeble, and all thighs shall be stained with moisture. | 17 All hands shall grow feeble, and all thighs shall be stained with moisture. |
18 They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be on all faces, and baldness on all their heads.
18 And they shall wrap themselves around with sackcloth, and amazement shall cover them. And shame shall be on every face on them, and baldness on every head. | 18 And they shall wrap themselves around with sackcloth, and amazement shall cover them. And shame shall be on every face on them, and baldness on every head. |
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of Yahweh: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumbling-block of their iniquity.
19 Their silver shall be thrown into the streets, and their gold shall be despised. Their souls shall not be satisfied, and their bellies shall not be filled, because a torture of their injustices has occurred. | 19 Their silver shall be thrown into the streets, and their gold shall be despised. Their souls shall not be satisfied, and their bellies shall not be filled, because a torture of their injustices has occurred. |
20 As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty; but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things in it; therefore have I set it far from them.
20 Choice adornments: they made them into arrogance, and they made from them images of their abominations; therefore I have given them as impurity to them. | 20 Choice adornments: they made them into arrogance, and they made from them images of their abominations; therefore I have given them as impurity to them. |
21 And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it.
21 And I will hand them over into the hands of foreigners to seize them and to the pests of the land as plunder, and they shall profane them. | 21 And I will hand them over into the hands of foreigners to seize them and to the pests of the land as plunder, and they shall profane them. |
22 My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place; for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.
22 And I will turn back my face from them, and they shall defile my visitation. And they will enter into them unguardedly, and they will profane them. | 22 And I will turn back my face from them, and they shall defile my visitation. And they will enter into them unguardedly, and they will profane them. |
23 Make a chain; for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.
23 And they shall make disorder, because the land is full of peoples and the city is full of lawlessness. | 23 And they shall make disorder, because the land is full of peoples and the city is full of lawlessness. |
24 Therefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled.
24 And I will turn back the insolence of their strength, and their holy things shall be defiled. | 24 And I will turn back the insolence of their strength, and their holy things shall be defiled. |
25 Destruction comes; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.
25 Atonement will come, and it will seek peace, and it won’t exist. | 25 Atonement will come, and it will seek peace, and it won’t exist. |
26 Mischief shall come on mischief, and rumour shall be on rumour; then they shall seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.
26 Woe will be on woe, and rumor will be on rumor. And vision will be sought from a prophet, and law will perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders. | 26 Woe will be on woe, and rumor will be on rumor. And vision will be sought from a prophet, and law will perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders. |
27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do to them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am Yahweh.
27 And a ruler will clothe himself in annihilation, and the hands of the people of the land will be disabled. According to their ways I shall deal with them, and by their judgments I shall judge them. And they will know that I am the Lord. | 27 And a ruler will clothe himself in annihilation, and the hands of the people of the land will be disabled. According to their ways I shall deal with them, and by their judgments I shall judge them. And they will know that I am the Lord. |
