Chapter 14

Israēl’s Taunt
1 For Yahweh will have mercy on Jacōb, and will yet choose Israēl, and set them in their own land; and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cling to the house of Jacōb.
1 And the Lord will have compassion on Jakōb and will yet choose Israēl, and they will rest on their own land, and the resident alien will be added to them; indeed, he will be added to the house of Jakōb. | 1 And the Lord will have compassion on Jakōb and will yet choose Israēl, and they will rest on their own land, and the resident alien will be added to them; indeed, he will be added to the house of Jakōb. |
2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place; and the house of Israēl shall possess them in the land of Yahweh for servants and handmaids; and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
2 And nations will take them and bring them into their place, and they will inherit and will be multiplied on the land of God for male slaves and female slaves, and those who captured them will be captives, and those who dominated them will be dominated. | 2 And nations will take them and bring them into their place, and they will inherit and will be multiplied on the land of God for male slaves and female slaves, and those who captured them will be captives, and those who dominated them will be dominated. |
3 And it will happen in the day that Yahweh shall give you rest from your sorrow, and from your fear, and from the hard bondage in which you were made to serve,
3 And it will be on that day that God will give you rest from your pain and wrath and your hard slavery by which you were subject to them. | 3 And it will be on that day that God will give you rest from your pain and wrath and your hard slavery by which you were subject to them. |
4 That you shall take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How has the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

4 And you will take up this lament against the king of Babylōn, and you will say on that day. How the extortioner has ceased and the taskmaster has ceased! | 4 And you will take up this lament against the king of Babylōn, and you will say on that day. How the extortioner has ceased and the taskmaster has ceased! |
5 Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
5 God has broken the yoke of sinners, the yoke of leaders. | 5 The Lord has broken the yoke of sinners, the yoke of leaders. |
6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he who ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hinders.
6 After striking a nation in wrath with an incurable plague, while striking a nation with a plague of wrath that spared no one, | 6 After striking a nation in wrath with an incurable plague, while striking a nation with a plague of wrath that spared no one, he rested with confidence. |
7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
7
7 he rested with confidence. All the earth shouts with joy; | 7 All the earth shouts with joy; |
8 Yes, the fir trees rejoice at you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since you are laid down, no feller is come up against us.
8 and the trees of Libanon rejoiced over you, even the cedar of Libanon, saying , “From when you fell asleep, the one who is to cut us down hasn’t come up.” | 8 and the trees of Libanon rejoiced over you, even the cedar of Libanon, saying , “From when you fell asleep, the one who is to cut us down hasn’t come up.” |
9 Hell from beneath is moved for you to meet you at your coming: it stirs up the dead for you, even all the chief ones of the earth; it has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
9 Hades from below was embittered after meeting you; all the giants who have ruled the earth rose up together against you, those who have risen from their thrones all the kings of the nations. | 9 Hades from below was embittered after meeting you; all the giants who have ruled the earth rose up together against you, those who have risen from their thrones all the kings of the nations. |
10 All they shall speak and say to you, Are you also become weak as we? Are you become like to us?
10 All will answer and say to you. “You were also taken just as we were, and you were counted among us.” | 10 All will answer and say to you. “You were also taken just as we were, and you were counted among us.” |
11 Your pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of your viols: the worm is spread under you, and the worms cover you.
11 But your glory (your abundant joy) went down to Hades they will spread decay beneath you, and a worm will be your covering. | 11 But your glory (your abundant joy) went down to Hades they will spread decay beneath you, and a worm will be your covering. |
12 How are you fallen from heaven, Oh Lucifer, son of the morning! how are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!

12 Oh how the morning star has fallen from heaven which rises early in the morning! He has been crushed into the earth who used to send light to all the nations. | 12 Oh how the morning star has fallen from heaven which rises early in the morning! He has been crushed into the earth who used to send light to all the nations. |
13 For you have said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.
13 You said in your mind, “I will ascend into heaven; I will set my throne above the stars of heaven; I will sit on a high mountain, on the high mountains toward the north; | 13 You said in your mind, “I will ascend into heaven; I will set my throne above the stars of heaven; I will sit on a high mountain, on the high mountains toward the north; |
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
14 I will ascend above the clouds; I will be like the Most High.” | 14 I will ascend above the clouds; I will be like the Most High.” |
15 Yet you shall be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
15 But now you will descend into Hades and into the foundations of the earth. | 15 But now you will descend into Hades and into the foundations of the earth. |
16 They who see you shall narrowly look on you, and consider you, saying, Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

17 Who made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities of it; who opened not the house of his prisoners?
17 The one who made the whole inhabited world desolate and overthrew the cities has not released those who are in distress. | 17 The one who made the whole inhabited world desolate and overthrew the cities has not released those who are in distress. |
18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, everyone in his own house.
18 All the kings of the nations have fallen asleep in honour, a man in his own house, | 18 All the kings of the nations have fallen asleep in honour, a man in his own house, |
19 But you are cast out of your grave like an abominable branch, and as the clothing of those who are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcass trodden under feet.

20
You shall not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, and slain your people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
20 so neither will you be clean; because you have destroyed my land, and killed my people. You won’t remain for eternal time, evil offspring! | 20 so neither will you be clean; because you have destroyed my land, and killed my people. You won’t remain for eternal time, evil offspring! |
21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they don’t rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
21 Prepare your children to be slaughtered for the sins of your father in order that they won’t arise and inherit the earth and fill the earth with cities. | 21 Prepare your children to be slaughtered for the sins of your father in order that they won’t arise and inherit the earth and fill the earth with wars. |
22 For I will rise up against them, says Yahweh of armies, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, says Yahweh.
22 And I will rise up against them, says the Lord Sabaōth, and will destroy their name and remnant and offspring. And I will rise up against them, says the Lord of armies, and I will destroy their name, and remnant, and offspring. thus says the Lord. | 22 And I will rise up against them, says the Lord Sabaōth, and will destroy their name and remnant and offspring. And I will rise up against them, says the Lord of armies, and I will destroy their name, and remnant, and offspring. thus says the Lord. |
23 I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water; and I will s weep it with the besom of destruction, says Yahweh of armies.
23 And I will make Babylōn desolate so that hedgehogs will dwell there, and it will become nothing, and I will make it a clay pit for destruction. | 23 And I will make Babylōn desolate so that hedgehogs will dwell there, and it will become nothing, and I will make it a clay pit for destruction. |
Judgment on Assyria
24 Yahweh of armies has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.
24 This is what the Lord Sabaōth says. As I have said, so shall it be, and as I have planned, so shall it remain; | 24 This is what the Lord Sabaōth says. As I have said, so shall it be, and as I have planned, so shall it remain; |
25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and on my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
25 to destroy the Assyrians from my land and from my mountains, and they shall be trampled, and their yoke shall be removed from them, and their fame shall be removed from their shoulders. | 25 to destroy the Assyrians from my land and from my mountains, and they shall be trampled, and their yoke shall be removed from them, and their fame shall be removed from their shoulders. |
26 This is the purpose that is purposed on the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out on all the nations.
26 This is the plan that the Lord has planned against the whole inhabited world, and this is the hand that is raised up against all the nations of the inhabited world. | 26 This is the plan that the Lord has planned against the whole inhabited world, and this is the hand that is raised up against all the nations of the inhabited world. |
27 For Yahweh of armies has purposed, and who shall disannul it? And his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

Judgment on Philistia
29 Don’t rejoice, whole Palestina, because the rod of him who smote you is broken; for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.
29 May you not rejoice, all you allophyles, for the yoke of him who struck you is broken, for from the offspring of snakes will come forth the posterity of snakes, and their posterity will come forth as flying snakes. | 29 May you not rejoice, all you allophyles, for the yoke of him who struck you is broken, for from the offspring of snakes will come forth the posterity of snakes, and their posterity will come forth as flying snakes. |
30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety; and I will kill your root with famine, and he shall slay your remnant.
30 And the poor will be fed by him, and poor men will rest in peace, but he will wipe out your offspring with famine, and he will destroy your remnant. | 30 And the poor will be fed by him, and poor men will rest in peace, but he will wipe out your offspring with famine, and he will destroy your remnant. |
31 Howl, Oh gate; cry, Oh city; you, whole Palestina, are dissolved; for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.
31 Howl, Oh city gates; let the cities be troubled and cry out, all the allophyles! Because smoke comes out of the north, and there is none to be. | 31 Howl, Oh city gates; let the cities be troubled and cry out, all the allophyles! Because smoke comes out of the north, and there is none to be. |
32 What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.
