Chapter 34

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Elihu Vindicates God’s Justice

1 Furthermore Elihu answered and said,

1 And Elius continued, and said, 1 And Elius continued, and said,

2 Hear my words, Oh you wise men; and give ear to me, you who have knowledge.

2 Hear me, you wise men; listen, you who have knowledge. 2 Hear me, you wise men; listen, you who have knowledge.

3 For the ear tries words, as the mouth tastes food.

3 For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat. 3 For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat.

4 Let’s choose to us judgment: let’s know among ourselves what is good.

4 Let’s choose judgment to ourselves: let’s know amount ourselves what is right. 4 Let’s choose judgment to ourselves: let’s know amount ourselves what is right.

5 For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my judgment.

5 For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment. 5 For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment.

6 Should I lie against my right? My wound is incurable without transgression.

6 And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness of mine. 6 And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness of mine.

7 What man is like Job, who drinks up scorning like water?

7 What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water? 7 What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?

8 Which goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men.

8 οὐχ ἁμαρτὼν οὐδὲ ἀσεβήσας ὁδοῦ κοινωνήσας μετὰ ποιούντων τὰ ἄνομα τοῦ πορευθῆναι μετὰ ἀσεβῶν; 8 οὐχ ἁμαρτὼν οὐδὲ ἀσεβήσας ὁδοῦ κοινωνήσας μετὰ ποιούντων τὰ ἄνομα τοῦ πορευθῆναι μετὰ ἀσεβῶν;
8 saying, I haven’t sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly. 8 saying, I haven’t sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.

9 For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

9 For you should not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas there is a visitation on him from the Lord. 9 For you should not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas there is a visitation on him from the Lord.

10 Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

10 Therefore hear me, you who are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the almighty. 10 Therefore hear me, you who are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the almighty.

11 For the work of a man he shall render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

11 Yes, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man’s path he will find him. 11 Yes, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man’s path he will find him.

12 Yes, surely God won’t do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

12 οἴῃ δὲ τὸν κύριον ἄτοπα ποιήσειν;
παντοκράτωρ ταράξει κρίσιν;
12 οἴει δὲ τὸν Κύριον ἄτοπα ποιήσειν;
Παντοκράτωρ ταράξει κρίσιν, ὃς ἐποίησε τὴν γῆν;
12 And think you who the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment? 12 And think you who the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment?

13 Who has given him a charge over the earth? Or who has disposed the whole world?

13 ὃς ἐποίησεν τὴν γῆν· τίς δέ ἐστιν ποιῶν τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν καὶ τὰ ἐνόντα πάντα; 13 τίς δέ ἐστιν ποιῶν τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν καὶ τὰ ἐνόντα πάντας;
13 And who is he who made the whole world under heaven, and all things in it? 13 And who is he who made the whole world under heaven, and all things in it?

14 If he set his heart on man, if he gather to himself his spirit and his breath;

14 For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself; 14 For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;

15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again to dust.

15 all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, from where also he was formed. 15 all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, from where also he was formed.

16 If now you have understanding, hear this: listen to the voice of my words.

16 Take heed lest he rebuke you: hear this, listen to the voice of words. 16 Take heed lest he rebuke you: hear this, listen to the voice of words.

17 Shall even he who hates right govern? And will you condemn him who is most just?

17 Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is forever just. 17 Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is forever just.

18 Is it fit to say to a king, You are wicked? And to princes, You are ungodly?

18 He is ungodly that says to a king, You are a transgressor, that says to princes, Oh most ungodly one. 18 He is ungodly that says to a king, You are a transgressor, that says to princes, Oh most ungodly one.

19 How much less to him who accepts not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of his hands.

19 Such a one as would not reverence the face of a honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected. 19 Such a one as would not reverence the face of a honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.

20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away; and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.

20 But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside from their right. 20 But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside from their right.

21 For his eyes are on the ways of man, and he sees all his goings.

21 For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him. 21 For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.

22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

22 Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves. 22 Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

23 For he won’t lay on man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.

23 For he won’t lay on a man more than right. 23 For he won’t lay on a man more than right.

24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.

24 For the Lord looks down on all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number. 24 For the Lord looks down on all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.

25 Therefore he knows their works, and he overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

25 Who discovers their works, and will bring night about on them, and they shall be brought low. 25 Who discovers their works, and will bring night about on them, and they shall be brought low.

26 He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

26 And he completely destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him. 26 And he completely destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.

27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways.

27 Because they turned aside from the law of God, and didn’t regard his ordinances, 27 Because they turned aside from the law of God, and didn’t regard his ordinances,

28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come to him, and he hears the cry of the afflicted.

28 so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor. 28 so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.

29 When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? And when he hides his face, who then can behold him? Whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only.

29 καὶ αὐτὸς ἡσυχίαν παρέξει, καὶ τίς καταδικάσεται;
καὶ κρύψει πρόσωπον, καὶ τίς ὄψεται αὐτόν;
29 καὶ αὐτὸς ἡσυχίαν παρέξει, καὶ τίς καταδικάσεται;
καὶ κρύψει πρόσωπον, καὶ τίς ὄψεται αὐτόν;
29 And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? And he will hide his face, and who shall see him? Whether it be done against a nation, or against a man also. 29 And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? And he will hide his face, and who shall see him? Whether it be done against a nation, or against a man also.

30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

30 causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people. 30 causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

31 Surely it is meet to be said to God, I have carried chastisement, I won’t offend any more.

31 For there is one that says to the Mighty One, I have received blessings; I won’t take a pledge. 31 For there is one that says to the Mighty One, I have received blessings; I won’t take a pledge.

32 Teach me what I don’t see: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

32 I will see apart from myself: show me if I have done unrighteousness; I won’t do so any more. 32 I will see apart from myself: show me if I have done unrighteousness; I won’t do so any more.

33 Should it be according to your mind? He will recompense it, whether you refuse, or whether you choose; and not I; therefore speak what you know.

33 μὴ παρὰ σου ἀποτείσει αὐτήν;
33 μὴ παρὰ σοῦ ἀποτίσει αὐτήν;
33 Will he take vengeance for it on you, whereas you will put it far from you? For you shall choose, and not I; and what you know, speak you. 33 Will he take vengeance for it on you, whereas you will put it far from you? For you shall choose, and not I; and what you know, speak you.

34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man listen to me.

34 Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word. 34 Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.

35 Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

35 But Job hasn’t spoken with understanding, his words are not uttered with knowledge. 35 But Job hasn’t spoken with understanding, his words are not uttered with knowledge.

36 My desire is that Job may be tried to the end because of his answers for wicked men.

36 However do you learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish. 36 However do you learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish.

37 For he adds rebellion to his sin, he claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.

37 that we add not to our sins; for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if we speak many words before the Lord. 37 that we add not to our sins; for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if we speak many words before the Lord.
