Chapter 3

NASTextRec
3:1 Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου τίς ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς; 1 Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου, τίς ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς;
Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Much in every sense. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. Much in every sense. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
3:3 τί γὰρ;
εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες, μὴ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ θεοῦ καταργήσει;
3 τί γάρ, εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες;
μὴ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ θεοῦ καταργήσει;
For what? If some didn’t believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? For what, if some didn’t believe? Their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?
Certainly not! Rather, let God be true, but every man a liar, just as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words,
And prevail when you are judged.”[1]
Certainly not! Rather, let God be true, but every man a liar, just as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words,
And prevail when you are judged.”[1]
3:5 εἰ δὲ ἀδικία ἡμῶν θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην συνίστησιν, τί ἐροῦμεν;
μὴ ἄδικος θεὸς ἐπιφέρων τὴν ὀργήν;
5 εἰ δὲ ἀδικία ἡμῶν θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην συνίστησι, τί ἐροῦμεν;
μὴ ἄδικος θεὸς ἐπιφέρων τὴν ὀργήν;
But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking from a human perspective.) But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking from a human perspective.)
3:6 μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον; 6 μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον;
Certainly not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world? Certainly not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world?
3:8 καὶ μὴ καθὼς βλασφημούμεθα καὶ καθώς φασίν τινες ἡμᾶς λέγειν ὅτι ποιήσωμεν τὰ κακά, ἵνα ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά;
8 καὶ μὴ καθὼς βλασφημούμεθα, καὶ καθώς φασί τινες ἡμᾶς λέγειν, ὅτι ποιήσωμεν τὰ κακά, ἵνα ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά;
And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and just as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Their condemnation is just. And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and just as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.

None are righteous

3:9 Τί οὖν; προεχόμεθα;
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have previously charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have previously charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one;
There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
All have turned away,
together they have become corrupted;
There is none who does good,
There is not even one.”[2]
All have turned away,
together they have become corrupted;
There is none who does good,
There is not even one.”[2]
“Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”[3]
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;[4]
“Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”[3]
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;[4]
“Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;[5] “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;[5]
“Their feet are swift to shed blood, “Their feet are swift to shed blood,
And they didn’t know the path of peace.”[6] And they didn’t know the path of peace.”[6]
Now we know that whatever the Torah says, it speaks to those who are under the Torah, so that every mouth may be silenced and all the world may become answerable to God; Now we know that whatever the Torah says, it speaks to those who are under the Torah, so that every mouth may be silenced and all the world may become answerable to God;
because by the works of the Torah no flesh will be justified in his sight; for from the Torah is the knowledge of sin. because by the works of the Torah no flesh will be justified in his sight; for from the Torah is the knowledge of sin.

Righteousness comes by faith

But now without the Torah the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Torah and the Prophets, But now without the Torah the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Torah and the Prophets,
even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all and upon all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
for all sinned and are falling short of the glory of God, for all sinned and are falling short of the glory of God,
being justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in his blood through faith for a proof of his righteousness because of the remission of the previously committed sins; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in his blood through faith for a proof of his righteousness because of the remission of the previously committed sins;
for the proof, I say, of his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. for the proof, I say, of his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
3:27 Ποῦ οὖν καύχησις;
διὰ ποίου νόμου;
τῶν ἔργων;
27 Ποῦ οὖν καύχησις;
διὰ ποίου νόμου;
τῶν ἔργων;
Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.
For we conclude that a man is justified by faith without works of the Torah. For we conclude that a man is justified by faith without works of the Torah.
3:29  Ἰουδαίων θεὸς μόνον;
οὐχὶ καὶ ἐθνῶν;
29  Ἰουδαίων θεὸς μόνον;
οὐχὶ δὲ καὶ ἐθνῶν;
Or is God only of the Jews? Is he not also of Gentiles? Yes, of Gentiles also, Or is God only of the Jews? Is he not also of Gentiles? Yes, of Gentiles also,
since God is one who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. since God is one who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
3:31 νόμον οὖν καταργοῦμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως;
31 νόμον οὖν καταργοῦμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως;
Do we then cancel the Torah through faith? Certainly not! But, we establish the Torah. Do we then cancel the Torah through faith? Certainly not! But, we establish the Torah.
