Abraham’s example

4:1 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν εὑρηκέναι Ἀβραὰμ τὸν προπάτορα ἡμῶν κατὰ σάρκα; 1 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν Ἀβραὰμ τὸν πατέρα ἡμῶν εὑρηκέναι κατὰ σάρκα;
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? What then shall we say that Abraham, our father according to the flesh, has found?
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has a boast, but not before God. For if Abraham was justified by works, he has a boast, but not before God.
4:3 τί γὰρ γραφὴ λέγει;
3 τί γὰρ γραφὴ λέγει;
For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.”[1] For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.”[1]
Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favour, but according to debt. Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favour, but according to debt.
But to the one who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, But to the one who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness without works: just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness without works:
“Blessed are those whose iniquities have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered. “Blessed are those whose iniquities have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered.
“Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”[2] “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”[2]
4:9  μακαρισμὸς οὖν οὗτος ἐπὶ τὴν περιτομὴν καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ἀκροβυστίαν;
9  μακαρισμὸς οὖν οὗτος ἐπὶ τὴν περιτομὴν, καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ἀκροβυστίαν;
Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”[3] Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”[3]
4:10 πῶς οὖν ἐλογίσθη;
ἐν περιτομῇ ὄντι ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ;
10 πῶς οὖν ἐλογίσθη;
ἐν περιτομῇ ὄντι, ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ;
How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe though uncircumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe though uncircumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the footprints of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised. and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the footprints of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Promise comes through faith

For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Torah, but through the righteousness of faith. For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Torah, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if those who are of the Torah are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is abolished; For if those who are of the Torah are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is abolished;
for the Torah produces wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation. for the Torah produces wrath, for where there is no law, there also is no violation.
Because of this, it is by faith, in order that it may be according to grace, so that the promise will be a guarantee to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Torah, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, Because of this, it is by faith, in order that it may be according to grace, so that the promise will be a guarantee to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Torah, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
(just as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”)[4] in the presence of him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence what doesn’t exist. (just as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”)[4] in the presence of him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence what doesn’t exist.
In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to what had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”[5] In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to what had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”[5]
After not being weak in faith, he considered his own body, now dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; After not being weak in faith, he considered his own body, now dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb;
but with regard to the promise of God, he didn’t waver in unbelief but was empowered in faith, giving glory to God, but with regard to the promise of God, he didn’t waver in unbelief but was empowered in faith, giving glory to God,
and being convinced that what had been promised, he was able also to do. and being convinced that what had been promised, he was able also to do.
Therefore it was also credited to him as righteousness. Therefore it was also credited to him as righteousness.
Now it was not only written for his sakes that it was credited to him, Now it was not only written for his sakes that it was credited to him,
but also for our sake, to whom it is about to be credited, as those who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, but also for our sake, to whom it is about to be credited, as those who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
who was delivered up because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. who was delivered up because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
