7:1  ἀγνοεῖτε, ἀδελφοὶ, γινώσκουσιν γὰρ νόμον λαλῶ, ὅτι νόμος κυριεύει τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐφ᾿ ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ; 1  ἀγνοεῖτε, ἀδελφοὶ, (γινώσκουσι γὰρ νόμον λαλῶὅτι νόμος κυριεύει τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐφ᾿ ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ;
Or do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the Torah), that the Torah has authority over a person for as much time as he lives? Or do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the Torah), that the Torah has authority over a person for as much time as he lives?
For the married woman is bound by Torah to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the Torah concerning her husband. For the married woman is bound by Torah to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the Torah concerning her husband.
So then, if while her husband is living she is being with another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the Torah, so that she is not an adulteress though she is being with another man. So then, if while her husband is living she is being with another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the Torah, so that she is not an adulteress though she is being with another man.
Therefore, my brothers, you also were caused to die to the Torah through the body of Christ, so that you might be with another, with him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. Therefore, my brothers, you also were caused to die to the Torah through the body of Christ, so that you might be with another, with him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
For while we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were revealed by the Torah, kept working in our members to bear fruit for death. For while we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were revealed by the Torah, kept working in our members to bear fruit for death.
But now we have been released from the Torah, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter. But now we have been released from the Torah, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
7:7 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν;
νόμος ἁμαρτία;
7 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν;
νόμος ἁμαρτία;
What shall we say then? Is the Torah sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I didn't know sin except through the Torah; for I had not known about coveting except the Torah had said, “You shall not covet.”[1] What shall we say then? Is the Torah sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I didn't know sin except through the Torah; for I had not known about coveting except the Torah had said, “You shall not covet.”[1]
But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting; for without the Torah sin is dead. But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting; for without the Torah sin is dead.
I was once alive without the Torah; but when the commandment came, sin became alive, I was once alive without the Torah; but when the commandment came, sin became alive,
then I died. And this commandment that was intended for life, revealed my death; then I died. And this commandment that was intended for life, revealed my death;
for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
So then, the Torah is sacred, and the commandment is sacred and righteous and good. So then, the Torah is sacred, and the commandment is sacred and righteous and good.
7:13 τὸ οὖν ἀγαθὸν ἐμοὶ ἐγένετο θάνατος;
13 τὸ οὖν ἀγαθὸν ἐμοὶ γέγονε θάνατος;
Therefore did what is good become death for me? Certainly not! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become extremely[2] sinful. Therefore did what is good become death for me? Certainly not! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become extremely[2] sinful.
For we know that the Torah is spiritual, but I am of flesh, having been sold under slavery to sin. For we know that the Torah is spiritual, but I am of flesh, having been sold under slavery to sin.
For what I am doing, I don’t understand; for I am not practicing what I want to do, but I am doing what I hate. For what I am doing, I don’t understand; for I am not practicing what I want to do, but I am doing what I hate.
But if I do what I don’t want to do, I agree with the Torah, that it is good. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I agree with the Torah, that it is good.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willingness is present in me, but not the doing of the good. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willingness is present in me, but I don’t find the doing of the good.
For the good that I want, I don’t do, but I practice the very evil that I don’t want. For the good that I want, I don’t do, but I practice the very evil that I don’t want.
But if I am doing the thing I don’t want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. But if I am doing the thing I don’t want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.
For in the inner man, I gladly concur with the Torah of God, For in the inner man, I gladly concur with the Torah of God,
24 ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου; 24 ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου;
Wretched man that I am! Who will free me from the body of this death? Wretched man that I am! Who will free me from the body of this death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the Torah of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the Torah of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
