I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience co-testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience co-testifies with me in the Holy Spirit,
For I could wish that I myself were accursed away from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, For I could wish that I myself were accursed away from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh,

But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israēl who are descended from Israēl; But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israēl who are descended from Israēl;
nor are they all descendants because they are Abraham’s children, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.”[1] nor are they all descendants because they are Abraham’s children, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.”[1]

And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, who had twins from sexual intercourse with one man, Isaac our father; And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, who had twins from sexual intercourse with one man, Isaac our father;
for although they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God might remain according to election, for although they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God might remain according to election,
not from works but from the one who calls, it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.”[3] not from works but from the one who calls, it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.”[3]

and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[5]

9:19 Ἐρεῖς μοι οὖν, Τί [οὖν] ἔτι μέμφεται;
τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκεν;
19 Ἐρεῖς οὖν μοι, Τί ἔτι μέμφεται;
τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκε;

9:20  ἄνθρωπε, μενοῦνγε σὺ τίς εἶ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ;
μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι, Τί με ἐποίησας οὕτως;
20 μενοῦνγε, ἄνθρωπε, σὺ τίς εἶ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ;
μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι, Τί με ἐποίησας οὕτως;
On the contrary, who are you, Oh man, to argue with God? The thing moulded will not say to the moulder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? On the contrary, who are you, Oh man, to argue with God? The thing moulded will not say to the moulder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it?
9:21  οὐκ ἔχει ἐξουσίαν κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος ποιῆσαι μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν; 21  οὐκ ἔχει ἐξουσίαν κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ, ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος ποιῆσαι μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος, δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν;
Or doesn’t the potter have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honourable use and another for dishonourable use? Or doesn’t the potter have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honourable use and another for dishonourable use?
What if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? What if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?
9:23 καὶ ἵνα γνωρίσῃ τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σκεύη ἐλέους προητοίμασεν εἰς δόξαν; 23 καὶ ἵνα γνωρίσῃ τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σκεύη ἐλέους, προητοίμασεν εἰς δόξαν;
And in order to make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory, And in order to make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory,
even us, whom he also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles. even us, whom he also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles.
As he says also in Hōsea, “I will call those who were not my people, ‘My people,’
And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”[7]
As he says also in Hōsea, “I will call those who were not my people, ‘My people,’
And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”[7]
“And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not my people,’
There they shall be called sons of the living God.”[8]
“And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not my people,’
There they shall be called sons of the living God.”[8]
Isaiah calls out concerning Israēl, “Though the number of the sons of Israēl be like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved; Isaiah calls out concerning Israēl, “Though the number of the sons of Israēl be like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved;
for the Lord will perform his word upon the earth completely and quickly.”[9] for the Lord will perform his word in righteousness completely and quickly because the word will be done shortly on the earth.”[9]
And just as Isaiah predicted, “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.”[10] And just as Isaiah predicted, “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.”[10]
9:30 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν;
30 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν;
What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who didn’t pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who didn’t pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith;
but Israēl, pursuing a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at that law. but Israēl, pursuing a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at the law of righteousness.
9:32 διὰ τί;
32 διατί;
Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though out of works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though out of works of the Torah. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,
just as it is written, “Look! I lay in Ziōn a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence, And he who believes in him will not be disappointed.”[11] just as it is written, “Look! I lay in Ziōn a stone of stumbling, And everyone who believes in him will not be disappointed.”[11]
