I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience co-testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, | I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience co-testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, |
that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. | that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. |
For I could wish that I myself were accursed away from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, | For I could wish that I myself were accursed away from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, |
who are Israēlites, who have the adoption, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Torah and the temple service and the promises; | who are Israēlites, who have the adoption, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Torah and the temple service and the promises; |

who are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amēn. | who are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amēn. |
9:6 Οὐχ
δὲ
ὅτι
ὁ
τοῦ
But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israēl who are descended from Israēl; | But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israēl who are descended from Israēl; |
nor are they all descendants because they are Abraham’s children, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.”[1] | nor are they all descendants because they are Abraham’s children, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.”[1] |
That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise who are considered as descendants. | That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise who are considered as descendants. |
For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”[2] | For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”[2] |
And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, who had twins from sexual intercourse with one man, Isaac our father; | And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, who had twins from sexual intercourse with one man, Isaac our father; |
for although they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God might remain according to election, | for although they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God might remain according to election, |
not from works but from the one who calls, it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.”[3] | not from works but from the one who calls, it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.”[3] |
Just as it is written, “Jacōb I loved, but Ēsau I hated.”[4] | Just as it is written, “Jacōb I loved, but Ēsau I hated.”[4] |
9:14 Τί
οὖν
What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? Certainly not! | What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? Certainly not! |
For he says to Mōses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[5] |
For he says to Mōses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[5] |
So then it doesn’t result from the one who is willing or from the one who is running, but from the mercy of God. | So then it doesn’t result from the one who is willing or from the one who is running, but from the mercy of God. |
For the Scripture says to Pharaōh, “For this very reason I raised you up, to demonstrate my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[6] | For the Scripture says to Pharaōh, “For this very reason I raised you up, to demonstrate my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[6] |
So then he has mercy on whom he wants, and he hardens whom he wants. | So then he has mercy on whom he wants, and he hardens whom he wants. |

οὖν,
Τί

οὖν
μοι,
Τί
ἔτι
You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who resists his intention?” | You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who resists his intention?” |
9:20 ὦ

τῷ
On the contrary, who are you, Oh man, to argue with God? The thing moulded will not say to the moulder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? | On the contrary, who are you, Oh man, to argue with God? The thing moulded will not say to the moulder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? |
Or doesn’t the potter have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honourable use and another for dishonourable use? | Or doesn’t the potter have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honourable use and another for dishonourable use? |
What if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? | What if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? |
And in order to make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory, | And in order to make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory, |
even us, whom he also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles. | even us, whom he also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles. |
As he says also in Hōsea, “I will call those who were not my people, ‘My people,’ And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”[7] |
As he says also in Hōsea, “I will call those who were not my people, ‘My people,’ And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”[7] |
“And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not my people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.”[8] |
“And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not my people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.”[8] |
Isaiah calls out concerning Israēl, “Though the number of the sons of Israēl be like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved; | Isaiah calls out concerning Israēl, “Though the number of the sons of Israēl be like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved; |
for the Lord will perform his word upon the earth completely and quickly.”[9] | for the Lord will perform his word in righteousness completely and quickly because the word will be done shortly on the earth.”[9] |
And just as Isaiah predicted, “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.”[10] | And just as Isaiah predicted, “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.”[10] |
9:30 Τί
οὖν
What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who didn’t pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; | What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who didn’t pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; |
but Israēl, pursuing a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at that law. | but Israēl, pursuing a law of righteousness, didn’t arrive at the law of righteousness. |
9:32 διὰ
Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though out of works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, | Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though out of works of the Torah. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, |
just as it is written, “Look! I lay in Ziōn a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence, And he who believes in him will not be disappointed.”[11] | just as it is written, “Look! I lay in Ziōn a stone of stumbling, And everyone who believes in him will not be disappointed.”[11] |
