Israēl Provoked God
1 “Hear, Oh Israēl; you are to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,
1 Hear, Oh Israēl! You are crossing the Jordan today, to enter to dispossess nations larger and stronger than you, cities great and walled up to the sky, | 1 Hear, Oh Israēl! You are crossing the Jordan today, to enter to dispossess nations larger and stronger than you, cities great and walled up to the sky, |
2 a people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, ‘Who can stand before the children of Anak!’
2 a great people, both numerous and tall, sons of Enak, whom you know and of whom you have heard; “Who can stand up against sons of Enak?” | 2 a great people, both numerous and tall, sons of Enak, whom you know and of whom you have heard; “Who can stand up against sons of Enak?” |
3 Understand therefore this day, that Yahweh your Elohim is he who goes over before you. As a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before your face; so you shall drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as Yahweh has said to you.
3 And you shall know today that your Lord God–this one proceeds before you; he is a devouring fire; this one will destroy them utterly, and he will turn them away before you, and you will destroy them, as the Lord has said to you. | 3 And you shall know today that your Lord God–this one proceeds before you; he is a devouring fire; this one will destroy them utterly, and he will turn them away before you, and you will destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you. |
4 After Yahweh your Elohim has cast them out from before you, don’t speak in your heart saying, ‘Because of my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is for the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh drives them out from before you.

4 When your Lord God utterly destroys these nations before you, don’t start to speak in your heart, saying; “Because of my righteousness, the Lord has brought me in to inherit this good land,” but because of the ungodliness of these nations the Lord will utterly destroy them before you. | 4 When your Lord God utterly destroys these nations before you, don’t start to speak in your heart, saying; “Because of my righteousness, the Lord has brought me in to inherit this good land,” |
5 You go to possess their land not because of your righteousness, or because of the uprightness of your heart; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh your Elohim drives them out from before you, and that he may perform the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacōb.
5 It is not because of your righteousness or the virtuousness of your heart that you are entering to inherit their land, but because of the ungodliness of these nations the Lord will utterly destroy them before you, and in order that he may establish his covenant that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham and Isaac and Jacōb. | 5 It is not because of your righteousness or the virtuousness of your heart that you are entering to inherit their land, but because of the ungodliness of these nations the Lord will utterly destroy them before you, and in order that he may establish his covenant that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham and Isaac and Jacōb. |
6 Understand therefore, that Yahweh your Elohim does not give you this good land to possess because of your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people.
6 And you shall know, today, that it is not because of your righteousness your Lord God is giving you this good land to inherit, because you are a stiff-necked people. | 6 And you shall know, today, that it is not because of your righteousness your Lord God is giving you this good land to inherit, because you are a stiff-necked people. |
7 Remember, and don’t forget, how you provoked Yahweh your Elohim to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you departed out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh.
7 Remember, don’t forget how you provoked your Lord God in the wilderness; from the day you came out of Aigypt until you came into this place, you have continued being disobedient regarding things concerning the Lord. | 7 Remember, don’t forget how you provoked your Lord God in the wilderness; from the day you came out of Aigypt until you came into this place, you have continued being disobedient regarding things concerning the Lord. |
8 Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, so that Yahweh was angry with you enough to have destroyed you.
8 Even at Chōrēb you provoked the Lord, and the Lord was angry with you to destroy you utterly, | 8 Even at Chōrēb you provoked the Lord, and the Lord was angry with you to destroy you utterly, |
9 When I had gone up into the mountain to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which Yahweh made with you, then I abode in the mount 40 days and 40 nights, I neither ate bread nor drank water.

10 And Yahweh delivered to me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which Yahweh spoke with you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

10 And the Lord gave me the two stone tablets written with the finger of God, and on them had been written all the words that the Lord had spoken to you at the mountain on the day of the assembly. | 10 And the Lord gave me the two stone tablets written with the finger of God, and on them had been written all the words that the Lord had spoken to you at the mountain on the day of the assembly. |
11 And it happened at the end of 40 days and 40 nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.
11 And it happened, throughout 40 days and 40 nights, that the Lord gave to me the two stone tablets, tablets of covenant. | 11 And it happened, throughout 40 days and 40 nights, that the Lord gave to me the two stone tablets, tablets of covenant. |
12 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Arise, go down quickly from here; for your people whom you have brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’
12 And the Lord said to me, “Get up, go down quickly from here, because your people whom you brought from the land of Aigypt have acted lawlessly. They have deviated quickly from the way that you commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten image.” | 12 And the Lord said to me, “Get up, go down quickly from here, because your people whom you brought from the land of Aigypt have acted lawlessly. They have deviated quickly from the way that you commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten image.” |
13 Furthermore, Yahweh spoke to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

13 And the Lord said to me, “I have spoken to you once and twice, saying; I have seen this people, and look, it is a stiff-necked people. | 13 And the Lord said to me, “I have spoken to you once and twice, saying; I have seen this people, and look, it is a stiff-necked people. |
14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’
14 Allow me to destroy them utterly, and I will blot out their name from beneath the sky, and I will make of you a nation great and strong and more numerous than this one.” | 14 Allow me to destroy them utterly, and I will blot out their name from beneath the sky, and I will make of you a nation great and strong and more numerous than this one.” |
15 So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
15 And after I had turned, I went down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets were in my two hands. | 15 And after I had turned, I went down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets were in my two hands. |
16 And I looked, and, indeed, you had sinned against Yahweh your Elohim, and had made you a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly out of the way which Yahweh had commanded you.
16 And when I saw that you had sinned against your Lord God and had made for yourselves a molten image and had deviated from the way that the Lord had commanded you, | 16 And when I saw that you had sinned against your Lord God and had made for yourselves a molten image and had deviated from the way that the Lord had commanded you, |
17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.
17 then after seizing the two tablets, I threw them from my two hands and smashed them before you. | 17 then after seizing the two tablets, I threw them from my two hands and smashed them before you. |
18 And I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, 40 days and 40 nights; I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which you sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger.
18 And I pleaded before the Lord a second time as also the first, 40 days and 40 nights; I didn’t eat bread, and I didn’t drink water on account of all your sins that you had sinned, by doing what was evil before your Lord God, to provoke him. | 18 And I pleaded before the Lord a second time as also the first, 40 days and 40 nights; I didn’t eat bread, and I didn’t drink water on account of all your sins that you had sinned, by doing what was evil before your Lord God, to provoke him. |
19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which Yahweh was wroth against you to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me at that time also.
19 And I was terrified on account of the wrath and the anger, because the Lord had been provoked against you to destroy you utterly. And the Lord listened to me this time also. | 19 And I was terrified on account of the wrath and the anger, because the Lord had been provoked against you to destroy you utterly. And the Lord listened to me this time also. |
20 And Yahweh was very angry with Aaron enough to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.
20 And the Lord was very angry against Aarōn to destroy him utterly, and I prayed also on behalf of Aaron at that time. | 20 And the Lord was very angry against Aarōn to destroy him utterly, and I prayed also on behalf of Aaron at that time. |
21 And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust; and I cast the dust of it into the brook that descended out of the mountain.
21 And your sin which you had made, the calf, I took it and burned it with fire and cut it apart, grinding thoroughly, until it became small and it was as dust, and I threw the dust into the rushing stream that runs down from the mountain. | 21 And your sin which you had made, the calf, I took it and burned it with fire and cut it apart, grinding thoroughly, until it became small and it was as dust, and I threw the dust into the rushing stream that runs down from the mountain. |
22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you provoked Yahweh to wrath.
22 And at The Burning also and at The Temptation and at The Graves of Lust, you were provoking your Lord God. | 22 And at The Burning also and at The Temptation and at The Graves of Lust, you were provoking your Lord God. |
23 Likewise when Yahweh sent you from Kedesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you’; then you rebelled against the command of Yahweh your Elohim, and you didn’t believe him, nor listened to his voice.
23 And when the Lord sent you from Kadēs Barnē, saying, “Go up, and inherit the land that I am giving you,” then you disobeyed the word of your Lord God and didn’t trust him and didn’t listen to his voice. | 23 And when the Lord sent you from Kadēs Barnē, saying, “Go up, and inherit the land that I am giving you,” then you disobeyed the word of your Lord God and didn’t trust him and didn’t listen to his voice. |
24 You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you.
24 You were disobedient regarding things concerning the Lord from the day he knew you. | 24 You were disobedient regarding things concerning the Lord from the day he knew you. |
25 Thus I fell down before Yahweh 40 days and 40 nights, as I fell down at the first; because Yahweh had said he would destroy you.

26 I prayed therefore to Yahweh, and said, ‘Oh Adonai Yahweh, don’t destroy your people and your inheritance, which you have redeemed through your greatness, which you have brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
