1 I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think on a maid?

בְּרִית כָּרַתִּי לְעֵינָי וּמָה אֶתְבֹּונֵן עַל ־ בְּתוּלָה׃

וּמֶה חֵלֶק אֱלֹוהַּ מִמָּעַל וְנַחֲלַת שַׁדַּי מִמְּרֹמִים׃

4 Doesn’t he see my ways, and count all my steps?

5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hurried to deceit;

אִם ־ הָלַכְתִּי עִם ־ שָׁוְא וַתַּחַשׁ עַל ־ מִרְמָה רַגְלִי׃

6 Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity.

7 εἰ ἐξέκλινεν ὁ πούς μου ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ, εἰ δὲ καὶ τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου, εἰ δὲ καὶ ταῖς χερσίν μου ἡψάμην δώρων,	7 εἰ ἐξέκλινεν ὁ πούς μου ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ, εἰ δὲ καὶ τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου, εἰ δὲ καὶ ταῖς χερσί μου ἡψάμην δώρων,

9 If my heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

11 For this is a heinous crime; yes, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

13 If I did despise the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me;

14 What then shall I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what shall I answer him?

וּמָה אֶעֱשֶׂה כִּי ־ יָקוּם אֵל וְכִי ־ יִפְקֹד מָה אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

אִם ־ אֶמְנַע מֵחֵפֶץ דַּלִּים וְעֵינֵי אַלְמָנָה אֲכַלֶּה׃

17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hasn’t eaten of it;

וְאֹכַל פִּתִּי לְבַדִּי וְלֹא ־ אָכַל יָתֹום מִמֶּנָּה׃

18 ὅτι ἐκ νεότητός μου ἐξέτρεφον ὡς πατὴρ καὶ ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρός μου ὡδήγησα·	18 ὅτι ἐκ νεότητός μου ἐξέτρεφον ὡς πατήρ, καὶ ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρός μου ὡδήγησα·

19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

אִם ־ אֶרְאֶה אֹובֵד מִבְּלִי לְבוּשׁ וְאֵין כְּסוּת לָאֶבְיֹון׃

20 If his loins haven’t blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

20 ἀδύνατοι δὲ εἰ μὴ εὐλόγησάν με, ἀπὸ δὲ κουρᾶς ἀμνῶν μου ἐθερμάνθησαν οἱ ὦμοι αὐτῶν,	20 ἀδύνατοι δὲ εἰ μὴ εὐλόγησάν με, ἀπὸ δὲ κουρᾶς ἀμνῶν μου ἐθερμάνθησαν οἱ ὦμοι αὐτῶν·

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate.

כְּתֵפִי מִשִּׁכְמָה תִפֹּול וְאֶזְרֹעִי מִקָּנָה תִשָּׁבֵר׃

23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I couldn’t endure.

24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, You are my confidence;

25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

25 εἰ δὲ καὶ εὐφράνθην πολλοῦ πλούτου μοι γενομένου, εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπ’ ἀναριθμήτοις ἐθέμην χεῖρά μου,	25 εἰ δὲ καὶ εὐφράνθην πολλοῦ πλούτου μοι γενομένου, εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπ’ ἀναριθμήτοις ἐθέμην χεῖρά μου·

26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27 And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand.

27 καὶ εἰ ἠπατήθη λάθρᾳ ἡ καρδία μου, εἰ δὲ καὶ χεῖρά μου ἐπιθεὶς ἐπὶ στόματί μου ἐφίλησα,	27 καὶ εἰ ἠπατήθη λάθρᾳ ἡ καρδία μου, εἰ δὲ χεῖρά μου ἐπιθεὶς ἐπὶ στόματί μου ἐφίλησα,

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge; for I should have denied the God that is above.

29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him.

29 εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπιχαρὴς ἐγενόμην πτώματι ἐχθρῶν μου καὶ εἶπεν ἡ καρδία μου εὖγε,	29 εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπιχαρὴς ἐγενόμην πτώματι ἐχθρῶν μου καὶ εἶπε ἡ καρδία μου· εὖγε,

30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

וְלֹא ־ נָתַתִּי לַחֲטֹא חִכִּי לִשְׁאֹל בְּאָלָה נַפְשֹׁו׃

31 If the men of my tent didn’t say, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

בַּחוּץ לֹא ־ יָלִין גֵּר דְּלָתַי לָאֹרַח אֶפְתָּח׃

33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom.

אִם ־ כִּסִּיתִי כְאָדָם פְּשָׁעָי לִטְמֹון בְּחֻבִּי עֲוֹנִי׃

34 οὐ γὰρ διετράπην πολυοχλίαν πλήθους τοῦ μὴ ἐξαγορεῦσαι ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν εἰ, δὲ καὶ εἴασα ἀδύνατον ἐξελθεῖν θύραν μου κόλπῳ κενῷ,	34 οὐ γὰρ διετράπην πολυοχλίαν πλήθους τοῦ μὴ ἐξαγορεῦσαι ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν· εἰ δὲ καὶ εἴασα ἀδύνατον ἐξελθεῖν θύραν μου κόλπῳ κενῷ,

מִי יִתֶּן ־ לִי שֹׁמֵעַ לִי הֶן ־ תָּוִי שַׁדַּי יַעֲנֵנִי וְסֵפֶר כָּתַב אִישׁ רִיבִי׃

35 τίς δῴη ἀκούοντά μου χεῖρα δὲ κυρίου εἰ μὴ ἐδεδοίκειν, συγγραφὴν δέ, ἣν εἶχον κατά τινος,	35 τίς δῴη ἀκούοντά μου; χεῖρα δὲ Κυρίου εἰ μὴ ἐδεδοίκειν, συγγραφὴν δέ, ἣν εἶχον κατά τινος,

מִסְפַּר צְעָדַי אַגִּידֶנּוּ כְּמֹו ־ נָגִיד אֲקָרֲבֶנּוּ׃

39 εἰ δὲ καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς ἔφαγον μόνος ἄνευ τιμῆς, εἰ δὲ καὶ ψυχὴν κυρίου τῆς γῆς ἐκβαλὼν ἐλύπησα,	39 εἰ δὲ καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς ἔφαγον μόνος ἄνευ τιμῆς, εἰ δὲ καὶ ψυχὴν κυρίου τῆς γῆς ἔκβαλὼν ἐλύπησα,

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
