topJob ch 32

Chapter 32

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Elihu Rebukes Job

1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

1 And his three friends also ceased any longer to answer Job; for Job was righteous before them. 1 And his three friends also ceased any longer to answer Job; for Job was righteous before them.

2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

2 Then Elius the son of Barachiel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, of the country of Ausis, was angered; and he was very angry with Job, because he justified himself before the Lord. 2 Then Elius the son of Barachiel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, of the country of Ausis, was angered; and he was very angry with Job, because he justified himself before the Lord.

3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

3 And he was also very angry with his three friends, because they were not able to return answers to Job, yet set him down for an ungodly man. 3 And he was also very angry with his three friends, because they were not able to return answers to Job, yet set him down for an ungodly man.

4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.

4 But Elius had delayed to give an answer to Job, because they were older than he. 4 But Elius had delayed to give an answer to Job, because they were older than he.

5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.

5 And Elius saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men; and he was angered in his wrath. 5 And Elius saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men; and he was angered in his wrath.

6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you are very old; therefore I was afraid, and durst not show you my opinion.

6 And Elius the Buzite the son of Barachiel answered and said, I am younger in age, and you are elder, why I kept silence, fearing to declare to you my own knowledge. 6 And Elius the Buzite the son of Barachiel answered and said, I am younger in age, and you are elder, why I kept silence, fearing to declare to you my own knowledge.

7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

7 And I said, It is not time that speaks, though in many years men know wisdom. 7 And I said, It is not time that speaks, though in many years men know wisdom.

8 But there is a spirit in man; and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding.

8 but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is what teaches. 8 but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is what teaches.

9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

9 The long-lived are not wise as such; neither do the aged know judgment. 9 The long-lived are not wise as such; neither do the aged know judgment.

10 Therefore I said, Listen to me; I also will show my opinion.

10 Why I said, Hear me, and I will tell you what I know. 10 Why I said, Hear me, and I will tell you what I know.

11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, while you searched out what to say.

11 Listen to my words; for I will speak in your hearing, until you shall have tried the matter with words. 11 Listen to my words; for I will speak in your hearing, until you shall have tried the matter with words.

12 Yes, I attended to you, and, behold, there was none of you who convinced Job, or that answered his words.

12 and I shall understand as far as you; and, behold, there was no one of you who answered Job his words in argument, 12 and I shall understand as far as you; and, behold, there was no one of you who answered Job his words in argument,

13 Lest you should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusts him down, not man.

13 lest you should say, We have found that we have added wisdom to the Lord. 13 lest you should say, We have found that we have added wisdom to the Lord.

14 Now he hasn’t directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.

14 And you have commissioned a man to speak such words. 14 And you have commissioned a man to speak such words.

15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.

15 They were afraid, they answered no longer; they gave up their speaking. 15 They were afraid, they answered no longer; they gave up their speaking.

16 When I had waited, (for they spoke not, but stood still, and answered no more;)

16 I waited, (for I hadn’t spoken,) because they stood still, they answered not. 16 I waited, (for I hadn’t spoken,) because they stood still, they answered not.

17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will show my opinion.

17 And Elius continued, and said, I will again speak, 17 And Elius continued, and said, I will again speak,

18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constrains me.

18 for I am full of words, for the spirit of my belly destroys me. 18 for I am full of words, for the spirit of my belly destroys me.

19 Behold, my belly is as wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.

19 And my belly is as a skin of sweet wine, bound up and ready to burst; or as a brazier’s labouring bellows. 19 And my belly is as a skin of sweet wine, bound up and ready to burst; or as a brazier’s labouring bellows.

20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.

20 I will speak, that I may open my lips and relieve myself. 20 I will speak, that I may open my lips and relieve myself.

21 Let me not, please, accept any man’s person, neither let me give flattering titles to man.

21 For truly I won’t be awed because of man, nor indeed will I be confounded before a mortal. 21 For truly I won’t be awed because of man, nor indeed will I be confounded before a mortal.

22 For I don’t know to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

22 For I don’t know how to respect persons; and if otherwise, even the moths would eat me. 22 For I don’t know how to respect persons; and if otherwise, even the moths would eat me.
