Bildad Describes the Wicked

1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

1 Then Baldad the Sauchite answered and said, 1 Then Baldad the Sauchite answered and said,

2 How long will it be ere you make an end of words? Mark, and afterwards we will speak.

2 μέχρι τίνος οὐ παύσῃ;
2 μέχρι τίνος οὐ παύσῃ;
2 How long will you continue? Forbear, that we also may speak. 2 How long will you continue? Forbear, that we also may speak.

3 Why are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight?

3 διὰ τί ὥσπερ τετράποδα σεσιωπήκαμεν ἐναντίον σου; 3 διατὶ δὲ ὥσπερ τετράποδα σεσιωπήκαμεν ἐναντίον σου;
3 For why have we been silent before you like brutes? 3 For why have we been silent before you like brutes?

4 He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? And shall the rock be removed out of his place?

τί γάρ;
ἐὰν σὺ ἀποθάνῃς, ἀοίκητος ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;
καταστραφήσεται ὄρη ἐκ θεμελιῶν;
4 κέχρηταί σοι ὀργή· τί γάρ;
ἐὰν σὺ ἀποθάνῃς, ἀοίκητος ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;
καταστραφήσεται ὄρη ἐκ θεμελιῶν;
4 Anger has possessed you; for what if you should die; would the earth under heaven be desolate? Or shall the mountains be overthrown from their foundations? 4 Anger has possessed you; for what if you should die; would the earth under heaven be desolate? Or shall the mountains be overthrown from their foundations?

5 Yes, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

5 But the light of the ungodly shall be quenched, and their flame shall not go up. 5 But the light of the ungodly shall be quenched, and their flame shall not go up.

6 The light shall be dark in his tent, and his candle shall be put out with him.

6 His light shall be darkness in his habitation, and his lamp shall be put out with him. 6 His light shall be darkness in his habitation, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

7 The steps of his strength shall be restricted, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

7 Let the mean of men spoil his goods, and let his counsel deceive him. 7 Let the mean of men spoil his goods, and let his counsel deceive him.

8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks on a snare.

8 His foot also has been caught in a snare, and let it be entangled in a net. 8 His foot also has been caught in a snare, and let it be entangled in a net.

9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.

9 And let snares come on him: he shall strengthen those who thirst for his destruction. 9 And let snares come on him: he shall strengthen those who thirst for his destruction.

10 The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

10 His snare is hid in the earth, and what shall take him is by the path. 10 His snare is hid in the earth, and what shall take him is by the path.

11 Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

11 Let pains destroy him all around, and let many enemies come about him, 11 Let pains destroy him all around, and let many enemies come about him,

12 His strength shall be starved, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

12 vex him with distressing hunger; and a signal destruction has been prepared for him. 12 vex him with distressing hunger; and a signal destruction has been prepared for him.

13 It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.

13 Let the soles of his feet be devoured; and death shall consume his beauty. 13 Let the soles of his feet be devoured; and death shall consume his beauty.

14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

14 And let health be utterly banished from his tent, and let distress seize on him with a charge from the king. 14 And let health be utterly banished from his tent, and let distress seize on him with a charge from the king.

15 It shall dwell in his tent, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered on his habitation.

15 It shall dwell in his tent in his night: his excellency shall be sown with brimstone. 15 It shall dwell in his tent in his night: his excellency shall be sown with brimstone.

16 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.

16 His roots shall be dried up from beneath, and his crop shall fall away from above. 16 His roots shall be dried up from beneath, and his crop shall fall away from above.

17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

17 Let his memorial perish out of the earth, and his name shall be publicly cast out. 17 Let his memorial perish out of the earth, and his name shall be publicly cast out.

18 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

18 Let one drive him from light into darkness. 18 Let one drive him from light into darkness.

19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

19 He shall not be known among his people, nor his house preserved on the earth. 19 He shall not be known among his people, nor his house preserved on the earth.

20 They who come after him shall be astonished at his day, as they who went before were affrighted.

20 But strangers shall dwell in his possessions: the last groaned for him, and wonder seized the first. 20 But strangers shall dwell in his possessions: the last groaned for him, and wonder seized the first.

21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him who doesn’t know God.

21 These are the houses of the unrighteous, and this is the place of those who don’t know the Lord. 21 These are the houses of the unrighteous, and this is the place of those who don’t know the Lord.
