Elihu: God Allows the Storm
1 At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of his place.
| 1 At this also my heart is troubled, and moved out of its place. | 1 At this also my heart is troubled, and moved out of its place. |
2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goes out of his mouth.
| 2 Hear a report by the anger of the Lord’s wrath, and a discourse shall come out of his mouth. | 2 Hear a report by the anger of the Lord’s wrath, and a discourse shall come out of his mouth. |
3 He directs it under the whole heaven, and his lightning to the ends of the earth.
| 3 His dominion is under the whole heaven, and his light is at the extremities of the earth. | 3 His dominion is under the whole heaven, and his light is at the extremities of the earth. |
4 After it a voice roars: he thunders with the voice of his excellency; and he won’t stay them when his voice is heard.
| 4 After him shall be a cry with a loud voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice. | 4 After him shall be a cry with a loud voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice. |
5 God thunders marvellously with his voice; great things does he, which we cannot comprehend.
| 5 The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice; for he has done great things which we didn’t know; | 5 The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice; for he has done great things which we didn’t know; |
6 For he says to the snow, Be on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.
| 6 commanding the snow, Be on the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might. | 6 commanding the snow, Be on the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might. |
7 He seals up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
| 7 He seals up the hand of every man, that every man may know his own weakness. | 7 He seals up the hand of every man, that every man may know his own weakness. |
8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
| 8 And the wild beasts come in under the covert, and rest in their lair. | 8 And the wild beasts come in under the covert, and rest in their lair. |
9 Out of the south comes the whirlwind; and cold out of the north.
| 9 Troubles come on out of the secret chambers, and cold from the mountain-tops. | 9 Troubles come on out of the secret chambers, and cold from the mountain-tops. |
10 By the breath of God frost is given; and the breadth of the waters is restricted.
| 10
καὶ
ἀπὸ

δὲ
| 10 And from the breath of the Mighty One he will send frost; and he guides the water in whatever way he pleases. | 10 And from the breath of the Mighty One he will send frost; and he guides the water in whatever way he pleases. |
11 Also by watering he wearies the thick cloud: he scatters his bright cloud.
| 11 And if a cloud obscures what is precious to him, his light will disperse the cloud. | 11 And if a cloud obscures what is precious to him, his light will disperse the cloud. |
12 And it is turned all around by his counsels: that they may do whatever he commands them on the face of the world in the earth.

| 12 And he will carry round the encircling clouds by his governance, to perform their works: whatever he shall command them, | 12 And he will carry round the encircling clouds by his governance, to perform their works: whatever he shall command them, |
13 He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.
| 13 this has been appointed by him on the earth, whether for correction, or for his land, or if he shall find him an object for mercy. | 13 this has been appointed by him on the earth, whether for correction, or for his land, or if he shall find him an object for mercy. |
14 Listen to this, Oh Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
| 14 Listen to this, Oh Job: stand still, and be admonished of the power of the Lord. | 14 Listen to this, Oh Job: stand still, and be admonished of the power of the Lord. |
15 Do you know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
| 15 We know that god has disposed his works, having made light out of darkness. | 15 We know that god has disposed his works, having made light out of darkness. |
16 Do you know how the clouds are balanced, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?
| 16 And he knows the divisions of the clouds, and the signal overthrows of the ungodly. | 16 And he knows the divisions of the clouds, and the signal overthrows of the ungodly. |
17 How your garments are warm, when he quiets the earth by the south wind?
| 17 But your robe is warm, and there is quiet on the land. | 17 But your robe is warm, and there is quiet on the land. |
18 Have you with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
| 18 Will you establish with him foundations for the ancient heavens? They are strong as a molten mirror. | 18 Will you establish with him foundations for the ancient heavens? They are strong as a molten mirror. |
19 Teach us what we shall say to him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
| 19
διὰ
| 19 Why teach me, what shall we say to him? And let’s cease from saying much. | 19 Why teach me, what shall we say to him? And let’s cease from saying much. |
20 Shall it be told him that I speak? If a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.
| 20 Have I a book or a scribe my me, that I may stand and put man to silence? | 20 Have I a book or a scribe my me, that I may stand and put man to silence? |
21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds; but the wind passes, and cleanses them.
| 21 But the light is not visible to all: it shines afar off in the heavens, as what is from him in the clouds. | 21 But the light is not visible to all: it shines afar off in the heavens, as what is from him in the clouds. |
22 Fair weather comes out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
| 22 From the north come the clouds shining like gold: in these great are the glory and honour of the Almighty; | 22 From the north come the clouds shining like gold: in these great are the glory and honour of the Almighty; |
23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he won’t afflict.
| 23 and we don’t find another his equal in strength: as for him who judges justly, do you not think that he listens? | 23 and we don’t find another his equal in strength: as for him who judges justly, do you not think that he listens? |
24 Men do therefore fear him: he doesn’t respect any that are wise of heart.
| 24 Therefore men shall fear him; and the wise also in heart shall fear him. | 24 Therefore men shall fear him; and the wise also in heart shall fear him. |
