Job Feels Insulted

1 Then Job answered and said,

1 Then Job answered and said, 1 Then Job answered and said,

2 How long will you vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?

2 ἕως τίνος ἔγκοπον ποιήσετε ψυχήν μου καὶ καθαιρεῖτε με λόγοις; 2 ἕως τίνος ἔγκοπον ποιήσετε ψυχήν μου καὶ καθαιρεῖτέ με λόγοις;
2 How long will you vex my soul, and destroy me with words? Only know that the Lord has dealt with me thus. 2 How long will you vex my soul, and destroy me with words? Only know that the Lord has dealt with me thus.

3 These ten times have you reproached me: you are not ashamed that you make yourselves strange to me.

3 You speak against me; you don’t feel for me, but bear hard on me. 3 You speak against me; you don’t feel for me, but bear hard on me.

4 And be it indeed that I have erred, my error remains with myself.

4 Yes verily, I have erred in truth, (but the error abides with myself) in having spoken words which it wasn’t right to speak; and my words err, and are unreasonable. 4 Yes verily, I have erred in truth, (but the error abides with myself) in having spoken words which it wasn’t right to speak; and my words err, and are unreasonable.

5 If indeed you will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach.

5 But alas! for you magnify yourselves against me, and insult me with reproach. 5 But alas! for you magnify yourselves against me, and insult me with reproach.

6 Know now that God has overthrown me, and has surrounded me with his net.

6 Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled me, and has raised his bulwark against me. 6 Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled me, and has raised his bulwark against me.

Job: Everything is Against Me

7 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.

7 Behold, I laugh at reproach; I won’t speak: or I will cry out, but there is nowhere judgment. 7 Behold, I laugh at reproach; I won’t speak: or I will cry out, but there is nowhere judgment.

8 He has fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness in my paths.

8 I am fenced all around, and can by no means escape: he has set darkness before my face. 8 I am fenced all around, and can by no means escape: he has set darkness before my face.

9 He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

9 And he has stripped me of my glory, and has taken the crown from my head. 9 And he has stripped me of my glory, and has taken the crown from my head.

10 He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone; and my hope has he removed like a tree.

10 He has torn me aall around, and I am gone; and he has cut off my hope like a tree. 10 He has torn me aall around, and I am gone; and he has cut off my hope like a tree.

11 He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me to him as one of his enemies.

11 And he has dreadfully handled me in anger, and has counted me for an enemy. 11 And he has dreadfully handled me in anger, and has counted me for an enemy.

12 His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp all around my tent.

12 His troops also came on me with one accord, liars in wait surrounded my ways. 12 His troops also came on me with one accord, liars in wait surrounded my ways.

13 He has put my brothers far from me, and my acquaintance are verily estranged from me.

13 My brothers have stood aloof from me; they have recognized strangers rather than me; and my friends have become pitiless. 13 My brothers have stood aloof from me; they have recognized strangers rather than me; and my friends have become pitiless.

14 My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.

14 My nearest of kin haven’t acknowledged me, and they who knew my name, have forgotten me. 14 My nearest of kin haven’t acknowledged me, and they who knew my name, have forgotten me.

15 They who dwell in my house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.

15 As for my household, and my maid-servants, I was a stranger before them. 15 As for my household, and my maid-servants, I was a stranger before them.

16 I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I entreated him with my mouth.

16 I called my servant, and he didn’t listen; and my mouth entreated him. 16 I called my servant, and he didn’t listen; and my mouth entreated him.

17 My breath is strange to my wife, though I entreated for the children’s sake of my own body.

17 And I besought my wife, and earnestly entreated the sons of my concubines. 17 And I besought my wife, and earnestly entreated the sons of my concubines.

18 Yes, young children despised me; I arose, and they spoke against me.

18 But they rejected me forever; whenever I rise up, they speak against me. 18 But they rejected me forever; whenever I rise up, they speak against me.

19 All my inward friends abhorred me; and they whom I loved are turned against me.

19 They who saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me. 19 They who saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me.

20 My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

20 My flesh is corrupt under my skin, and my bones are held in my teeth. 20 My flesh is corrupt under my skin, and my bones are held in my teeth.

21 Have pity on me, have pity on me, Oh you my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

21 Pity me, pity me, Oh friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me. 21 Pity me, pity me, Oh friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me.

22 Why do you persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

22 διὰ τί δέ με διώκετε ὥσπερ καὶ κύριος, ἀπὸ δὲ σαρκῶν μου οὐκ ἐμπίπλασθε; 22 διατί με διώκετε ὥσπερ καὶ Κύριος;
ἀπὸ δὲ σαρκῶν μου οὐκ ἐμπίπλασθε;
22 Why do you persecute me as also the Lord does, and are not satisfied with my flesh? 22 Why do you persecute me as also the Lord does, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

Job: My Redeemer Lives

23 Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!

23 τίς γὰρ ἄν δῴη γραφῆναι τὰ ῥήματά μου, τεθῆναι δὲ αὐτὰ ἐν βιβλίῳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα 23 τίς γὰρ ἄν δοίη γραφῆναι τὰ ῥήματά μου, τεθῆναι δὲ αὐτὰ ἐν βιβλίῳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα;
23 For oh that my words were written, and that they were recorded in a book forever, 23 For oh that my words were written, and that they were recorded in a book forever,

24 That they were engraven with an iron pen and lead in the rock forever!

24 ἐν γραφείῳ σιδηρῷ καὶ μολίβῳ ἐν πέτραις ἐγγλυφῆναι; 24 ἐν γραφείῳ σιδηρῷ καὶ μολίβῳ ἐν πέτραις ἐγγλυφῆναι;
24 with an iron pen and lead, or engraven in the rocks! 24 with an iron pen and lead, or engraven in the rocks!

25 For I know that my redeemer lives, and that he shall stand at the latter day on the earth.

25 For I know that he is eternal who is about to deliver me, 25 For I know that he is eternal who is about to deliver me,

26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.

26 and to raise up on the earth my skin that endures these sufferings; for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord; 26 and to raise up on the earth my skin that endures these sufferings; for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord;

27 Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my insides be consumed within me.

27 which I am conscious of in myself, which my eye has seen, and not another, but all have been fulfilled to me in my bosom. 27 which I am conscious of in myself, which my eye has seen, and not another, but all have been fulfilled to me in my bosom.

28 But you should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?

28 εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐρεῖτε τί ἐροῦμεν ἔναντι αὐτοῦ;
28 εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐρεῖτε· τί ἐροῦμεν ἔναντι αὐτοῦ;
28 But if you shall also say, What shall we say before him, and so find the root of the matter in him? 28 But if you shall also say, What shall we say before him, and so find the root of the matter in him?

29 Be afraid of the sword; for wrath brings the punishments of the sword, that you may know there is a judgment.

29 Do you also beware of deceit; for wrath will come on transgressors; and then shall they know where their substance is. 29 Do you also beware of deceit; for wrath will come on transgressors; and then shall they know where their substance is.
