Chapter 7
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |
---|
1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and camped beside the well of Harod; so that the army of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
1 And Jerobaal (he is Gedeōn) rose early, and all the people who were with him, and encamped beside the land of Arōed, and the camp of Madiam and Amalēk was north of him, away from the hill of Abōr, in the valley. | 1 And Jarbal (he is Gedeōn) rose early, and all the people with him, and they encamped by the spring of Arad, and the camp of Madiam was north of him, away from Gabaath Amōra, in the valley. |
2 And Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israēl vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
2 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “The people with you are numerous; so I will not give over Madiam in their hand. Perhaps Israēl would boast against me, saying, ‛My own hand has delivered me.’ ” | 2 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “The people with you are numerous; so I will not give up Madiam in their hand. Perhaps Israēl would boast against me, saying, ‛My own hand has delivered me.’ |
3 Now please proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead.’” And 22,000 of the people returned; and there remained 10,000.

3 And the Lord said to him, “Please proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‛Who is faint-hearted and fearful? Let him return home.’ ” And 22,000 quickly set out from Mount Galaad and returned home from the people, and 10,000 remained. | 3 And please proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‛Who is the one who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him turn around and leave Mount Galaad.’ ” And 22,000 from the people turned around, and 10,000 remained. |
4 And Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. And it shall be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

4 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “The people are still numerous; bring them down into the water, and I will test them for you there. And it will be that anyone of whom I say to you, ‛This one shall go with you,’ he shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‛he shall not go with you,’ he shall not go with you.” | 4 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “The people are still numerous; bring them down to the water, and I will filter them for you there. And it will be that anyone of whom I say to you, ‛This one shall go with you,’ he shall go with you, and every one of whom I say to you, ‛This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go with you. |
5 So he brought down the people to the water. And Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, him you shall set by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”
5 And he brought the people into the water, and the Lord said to Gedeōn, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue as if a dog laps, you shall stand him to one side, and every one who bends on his knees to drink, you shall put him away from them.” | 5 And he brought the people down to the water, and the Lord said to Gedeōn, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue as if a dog laps, you shall sstand him to one side, and so with all those who leans over on their knees to drink.” |
6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were 300 men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water.
6 And the number of those who lapped with their tongue was 300 men, and all the rest of the people bent on their knees to drink water. | 6 And the number of those who lapped with their hand to their mouth was 300 men, and all the remainder of the people leaned on their knees to drink water. |
7 And Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the 300 men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Now let all the other people go, each man to his place.”
7 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “With the 300 men who lapped I will deliver you and give over Madiam in your hand. And let all the people depart, a man to his place.” | 7 And the Lord said to Gedeōn, “With the 300 men who lapped I will deliver you and give Madiam in your hand. And all the people will go, a man to his place.” |
8 So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of Israēl every man to his tent, and retained those 300 men; and the army of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

8 And they took the provisions of the people in their hand, and their horns, and he sent away every man of Israēl, a man to his dwelling, but retained the 300 men. Now the camp of Madiam was below him in the valley. | 8 And they took the provisions of the people in their hand, and their horns, and he sent every man of Israēl away, a man to his tent, and he encouraged the 300 men. And the camp of Madiam was below him in the valley. |
9 And it happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go you down to the army; for I have delivered it into your hand.
9 And it came to be, in that night that the Lord said to him, “Get up, go down quickly from here into the camp, because I have given it over in your hand. | 9 And it came to be, in that night that the Lord said to him, “Get up, and go down in the camp, for I have given it over in your hand. |
10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down with Phurah your servant to the army.
10 But if you fear to go down, you and your young servant Phara go down into the camp, | 10 And if you fear to go down, you and your young servant Phara go down into the camp, |
11 And you shall hear what they say; and afterward shall your hands be strengthened to go down to the army.” Then he went down with Phurah his servant to the outskirts of the armed men who were in the army.

11 and you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened, and you shall go down into the camp.” And he went down, he and his young servant Phara within the bounds of the 50 in the camp. | 11 and you shall hear what they will say, and after that your hands shall be strengthened, and you shall go down in the camp.” And he went down, he and his young servant Phara toward the beginning of the 50 who were in the camp. |
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
12 And Madiam and Amalēk and all the sons of the east had encamped in the valley like a grasshopper, in great numbers, and their camels were innumerable, but they were just like the sand on the seashore, in great numbers. | 12 And Madiam and Amalēk and all the sons of the east were thrown in the valley like a grasshopper, in great numbers, and their camels were innumerable, but they were like the sand on a seashore, in great numbers. |
13 And when Gideon came, suddenly, there was a man who told a dream to his fellow, and said, “Listen, I dreamed a dream, and, look, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the army of Midian, and came to a tent, and hit it so that it fell, and overturned it, so that the tent collapsed.”
13 And Gedeōn entered, and look! a man was telling his dream to his companion, and he said, “Look! the dream which I dreamed, and look! a cake of barley bread was tumbling in the camp of Madiam, and it came to the tent of Madiam and struck it and overturned it, and the tent collapsed.” | 13 And Gedeōn arrived, and look! a man telling a dream to his companion, and he said, “A dream, look! I dreamed, and look! a cake of barley bread was spinning round in the camp of Madiam, and it came to the tent and struck it, and it collapsed, and it turned it upside down, and the tent collapsed.” |
14 And his partner answered and said, “This is nothing else except the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israēl; for into his hand Elohim has delivered Midian, and all the camp.”
14 And his companion answered and said, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gedeōn son of Jōas, a man of Israēl; the Lord has given over Madiam and all the camp in his hand.” | 14 And his companion answered and said, “This is nothing if not the sword of Gedeōn son of Jōas, a man of Israēl; God has given over Madiam and all the camp in his hand.” |
15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshipped, and returned into the army of Israēl, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered into your hand the army of Midian.”
15 And it came to be, as Gedeōn heard the story of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshipped the Lord, and he returned into the camp of Israēl and said, “Get up, because the Lord has given the camp of Madiam in your hands.” | 15 And it came to be, as Gedeōn heard the explanation of the dream and its interpretation, that he did obeisance to the Lord, and he returned into the camp of Israēl and said, “Get up, for the Lord has given the camp of Madiam in your hand.” |
16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty jars, and torches within the jars.
16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and gave horns in the hand of all of them and empty jars and torches in the middle of the jars. | 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and gave horns in the hands of all of them and empty jars and torches in the jars. |
17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise; and, look, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.
17 And he said to them, “You will watch me then do the same. And look! I am going into the middle of the camp, and it will be that as I do, so you shall do. | 17 And he said to them, “You will watch me then do the same. And look! I am entering in the head of the camp, and it will be that as I do, so you shall do. |
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, ‘The sword of Yahweh, and of Gideon.’ ”
18 And I shall sound with the horn, I and all those with me, and you also shall sound with your horns around the camp and say, ‛For the Lord and for Gedeōn!’ ” | 18 And I shall sound with the horn for my part, and all you with me shall sound with your horns around the entire camp and say, ‛For the Lord and for Gedeōn!’ ” |
19 So Gideon, and the 100 men who were with him, came to the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had just recently set the watch; and they blew the trumpets, and broke the jars that were in their hands.
19 And Gedeōn and 100 men with him entered in part of the camp at the beginning of the midnight watch; however, he roused the guards with an awakening, and they sounded with the horns and shook off the jars that were in their hands. | 19 And Gedeōn and 100 men with him entered in the head of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, and awakening they awakened the guards, and they sounded with the horns and shook out the jars that were in their hands. |
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the jars, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh, and of Gideon.”
20 And the three companies sounded with the horns and broke the jars and grasped the torches in their left hand, and in their right hand were the horns to sound, and they cried, “A sword by the Lord and by Gedeōn!” | 20 And the three companies sounded with the horns and broke the jars and seized the torches in their left hands, and in their right hands the horns to sound, and they cried, “A sword by the Lord and by Gedeōn!” |
21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and all the army ran, and shouting, and fled.
21 And everyone stood in his place all around the camp, and they ran, all the camp, and they gave signals and fled. | 21 And they stood, a man for himself, all around the camp, and all the camp ran, and they gave signals and fled. |
