topJudges ch 8

Chapter 8

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And the men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you treated us this way, that you didn’t call us, when you went to fight with the Midianites?” And they contended with him steadily.

1 Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀνὴρ Ἐφραὶμ Τί τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν τοῦ μὴ καλέσαι ἡμᾶς, ὅτε ἐξεπορεύου πολεμῆσαι ἐν τῇ Μαδιάμ;
1 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Γεδεὼν ἀνὴρ Ἐφραίμ· τί τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν τοῦ μὴ καλέσαι ἡμᾶς, ὅτε ἐπορεύθης παρατάξασθαι ἐν Μαδιάμ;
1 And a man of Ephraim said to him,“Why have you done this thing to us, not to call us when you were setting out to fight against Madiam?” And they disputed with him severely. 1 And they said to Gedeōn, a man of Ephraim, “Why have you done this thing to us, not to call us when you set out to deploy against Madiam?” And they argued strongly with him.

2 And he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison to you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

2 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί ἐποίησα νῦν καθὼς ὑμεῖς, οὐχὶ κρείττω ἐπιφυλλίδες Ἐφραὶμ τρυγητὸς Ἀβιεζέρ; 2 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· τί ἐποίησα νῦν καθὼς ὑμεῖς;
οὐχὶ κρεῖσσον ἐπιφυλλὶς Ἐφραὶμ τρυγητὸς Ἀβιεζέρ;
2 And he said to them, “What have I done now just as you? Are not the grape gleanings of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? 2 And he said to them, “What have I done now just as you? Or is not the grape gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 God has delivered into your hands the princes of Midian: Oreb and Zeeb. And what was I able to do in comparison to you?” Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

3 ἐν χειρὶ ὑμῶν παρέδωκεν κύριος τοὺς ἄρχοντας Μαδιάμ, τὸν Ὠρὴβ καὶ τὸν Ζήβ· καὶ τί ἠδυνάσθην ποιῆσαι καθὼς ὑμεῖς;
3 ἐν χειρὶ ὑμῶν παρέδωκεν κύριος τοὺς ἄρχοντας Μαδιάμ, τὸν Ὠρὴβ καὶ τὸν Ζήβ· καὶ τί ἠδυνήθην ποιῆσαι ὡς ὑμεῖς;
3 God has given over in your hand the leaders of Madiam, Ōrēb and Zēb, and what have I been able to do just as you have?” And they refrained. Then their spirit slackened from him, when he spoke this word. 3 God has given over in your hand the leaders of Madiam, Ōrēb and Zēb, and what have I been able to do just as you have?” Then their spirit slackened from him, when he spoke this word.

4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the 300 men who were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

4 And Gedeōn came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men with him, faint and hungry. 4 And Gedeōn came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, hungry and pursuing.

5 And he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give some loaves of bread to the people who follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

5 And he said to the men of Sokchōth, “Please give some loaves to the people who are with me, because they are hungry; but I am pursuing after Zebee and Salmana, kings of Madiam.” 5 And he said to the men of Sokchōth, “Please give some loaves as food for this people who is at my feet, because they are fainting, and look! I am pursuing after Zebee and Selmana, kings of Madiam.”

6 And the princes of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?”

6 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἄρχοντες Σοκχὼθ Μὴ χεὶρ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σαλμανὰ νῦν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ὅτι δώσομεν τῇ στρατιᾷ σου ἄρτους; 6 καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄρχοντες Σοκχώθ· μὴ χεὶρ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σελμανὰ νῦν ἐν χειρί σου;
οὐ δώσομεν τῇ δυνάμει σου ἄρτους;
6 And the leaders of Sokchōth said, “A hand of Zebee and Salmana are not already in your hand, are they; so that we shall give loaves to your army?” 6 And the leaders of Sokchōth said, “A hand of Zebee and Salmana are not already in your hand, are they? We won’t give you loaves under duress, will we?”

7 And Gideon said, “Therefore when Yahweh has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.”

7 And Gedeōn said, “Not so! When the Lord has given Zebee and Salmana in my hand, I will also tear your flesh to shreds with the thorns of the wilderness and with the Barkonnim.” 7 And Gedeōn said, “Therefore, when the Lord has given Zebee and Selmana in my hand, then I will thresh your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with the Barkēnin.”

8 And he went up from there to Penuel, and spoke to them likewise; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

8 And from there he went up to Phanouēl and spoke to them in a similar way, and the men of Phanouēl answered him as the men of Sokchōth had answered him. 8 And from there he went up to Phanouēl and spoke to them likewise, and the men of Phanouēl answered him as the men of Sokchōth had answered.

9 And he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

9 And he said to the men of Phanouēl, saying, “When I come back with peace, I will tear down this tower.” 9 And Gedeōn said to the men of Phanouēl, “On my return with peace, I will tear down this tower.”

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about 15,000 men, all who were left of all the armies of the sons of the east; for there fell 120,000 men who drew sword.

10 And Zebee and Salmana were in Karkar, and their camp was with them, about 15,000, those who were left among all the camp of the sons of the east, and those who had fallen were 120,000 men who had drawn a sword. 10 And Zebee and Selmana were in Karkar, and their camp was with them, about 15,000 men, all those who were left out of all the army of allophyles, and those who had fallen were 120,000 men drawing a sword.

11 And Gideon went up by the way of those who dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the army; for the army felt secure.

11 And Gedeōn went up a road of those who dwell in tents, east of Nabeth, opposite Zebee, and he struck the camp, but the camp was confident. 11 And Gedeōn went up a road of those who camp in tents, to the east of Nabai and Jegebal, and he struck the camp, and the camp was confident.

12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and defeated all the army.

12 And Zebee and Salmana fled, and he pursued after them and seized the two kings of Madiam, Zebee and Salmana, and destroyed all their camp. 12 And Zebee and Selmana fled, and he pursued after them and seized the two kings of Madiam, Zebee and Selmana, and confused all their camp.

13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle before the sun was up,

13 And Gedeōn son of Jōas returned from the war, from the ascent of Ares. 13 And Gedeōn son of Jōas returned from the battle, from above the battle of Ares.

14 and caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and asked him. And he described to him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, 77 men.

14 And they captured a lad out of the men of Sokchōth, and he asked him, and he wrote down for them the leaders of Sokchōth and its elders, 77 men. 14 And he captured a lad from the men of Sokchōth, and he asked him, and he wrote for him the names of the leaders of Sokchōth and their elders, 77 men.

15 And he came to the men of Succoth, and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom you mocked me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?’ ”

15 καὶ παρεγένετο Γεδεὼν πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας Σοκχὼθ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σαλμανά, δι’ οὓς ὠνειδίσατέ με λέγοντες Μὴ χεὶρ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σαλμανὰ νῦν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ὅτι δώσομεν τοῖς ἀνδράσιν σου τοῖς ἐκλελυμένοις ἄρτους; 15 καὶ παρεγένετο Γεδεὼν πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας Σοκχὼθ καὶ εἶπεν· ἰδοὺ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σελμανά, ἐν οἷς ὠνειδίσατέ με λέγοντες· μὴ χεὶρ Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σελμανὰ νῦν ἐν χειρί, σου ὅτι δώσομεν τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς ἐκλείπουσιν ἄρτους;
15 And Gedeōn came to the leaders of Sokchōth and said to them, “Look! Zebee and Salmana, on me whom you taunted, saying, ‛A hand of Zebee and Salmana are not already in your hand so that we shall give loaves to your men who are exhausted?’ ” 15 And Gedeōn came to the rulers of Sokchōth and said, “Look! Zebee and Selmana, on me whom you taunted, saying, ‛Do you perhaps already have in your hand a hand of Zebee and Selmana, that we shall give loaves to the men who are fainting?’ ”

16 And he took the elders of the city, and with thorns of the wilderness and briers, he taught the men of Succoth.

16 And he took the leaders and the elders of the city, and he tore them to shreds with the thorns of the wilderness and the Barakēnim, and he tore the men of Sokchōth to shreds with them. 16 And he took the elders of the city with the thorns of the wilderness and the Barakēnim, and he threshed the men of the city with them.

17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city.

17 And he tore down the tower of Phanouēl and killed the men of the city. 17 And he overthrew the tower of Phanouēl and killed the men of the city.

18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What manner of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” And they answered, “As you are, so were they; each one resembled the sons of a king.”

18 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σαλμανὰ Ποῦ οἱ ἄνδρες, οὓς ἀπεκτείνατε ἐν Θαβώρ;
18 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ζεβεὲ καὶ Σελμανά· ποῦ οἱ ἄνδρες, οὓς ἀπεκτείνατε ἐν Θαβώρ;
18 And he said to Zebee and Salmana, “Where are the men whom you killed at Thabōr?” And they said, “Like you, like them; like the appearance, the form, of kings’ sons.” 18 And he said to Zebee and Selmana, “Where are the men whom you killed at Thabōr?” And they said, “As you are, so they were; for a likeness of a king’s son.

19 And he said, “They were my brothers, even the sons of my mother; as Yahweh lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not slay you.”

19 And Gedeōn said, “They are my brothers and the sons of my mother.” And he swore to them. “The Lord lives; if you had kept them alive, I would not have killed you.” 19 And Gedeōn said, “They were my brothers and the sons of my mother. The Lord lives; if you had brought them to life, I would not have killed you.”

20 And he said to Jether his firstborn, “Up, and slay them.” But the youth didn’t draw his sword; for he was afraid, because he was still a youth.

20 And he said to Jether his firstborn, “Get up, and kill them!” And the lad didn’t draw his dagger, because he was afraid, because he was too young. 20 And Jether said to his firstborn, “Get up, and kill them!” And the lad didn’t draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still too young.

21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself and fall on us; as for the man so is his strength.” And Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

21 And Zebee and Salmana said, “Please get up then and face us, because as a man is his power. And Gedeōn got up and killed Zebee and Salmana, and he took the crescents that were on the necks of their camels. 21 And Zebee and Selmana said, “Get up and face us, because your power is like a man’s.” And Gedeōn got up and killed Zebee and Selmana, and he took the crescents that were on the necks of their camels.

22 Then the men of Israēl said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you and your son, and your son’s son also; for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian.”

22 And a man of Israēl said to Gedeōn, “Rule among us, you and your sons, because you have delivered us out of Madiam’s hand.” 22 And they said, a man of Israēl, to Gedeōn, “Sir, rule us, both you and your son, because you were the one who delivered us out of adiam’s hand.”

23 And Gideon said to them, “I won’t rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you; Yahweh shall rule over you.”

23 And Gedeōn said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.” 23 And Gedeōn said to them, “I will not rule, and my son will not rule, among you; the Lord will rule over you.”

24 And Gideon said to them, “I have a request for you, that each of you would give me the earrings from his plunder.” (For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

24 And Gedeōn said to them, “I will request a request of you, and each man of you, give me an earring from his booty.” Because they had many golden earrings, because they were Ismaēlites. 24 And Gedeōn said to them, “I will request a request of you, and each man of you, give me an earring out of his booty.” Because they had golden earrings, because they were Ismaēlites.

25 And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a garment, and every man threw in it the earrings of his plunder.

25 And they said, “By giving we will give them.” And he spread his garment, and each man threw a golden earring of his booty there. 25 And they said, “By giving we will give them.” And he spread his garment, and each man threw a golden earring of his booty there.

26 And the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 1700 shekels of gold; besides ornaments, and collars, and purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were around their camels’ necks.

26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1700 shekels of gold (apart from the jewels and the small necklaces pendants and the purple cloaks that were on the kings of Madiam and apart from the golden collars that were on the necks of their camels). 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1500 pieces of gold (apart from the crescents and the ornaments and the cloaks and purple garments that were on the kings of Madiam and except for the bands that were on the necks of their camels).

27 And Gideon made an ephod of it, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah; and all Israēl went to that place prostituting themselves after it; which object became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.

27 And Gedeōn made it into an ephoud and stood it in his city, in Ephratha, and all Israēl prostituted themselves after it there, and it became for an obstacle to Gedeōn and to his house. 27 And Gedeōn made it into an ephod and stood it in his city, Ephratha, and all Israēl prostituted themselves after it there, and it became for a hindrance to Gedeōn and to his house.

28 Thus was Midian subdued before the sons of Israēl, so that none of them lifted up their heads anymore. And the country was in quietness 40 years in the days of Gideon.

28 And Madiam was humbled before the sons of Israēl, and they didn’t continue to lift up their head. 30 And Gideon had 70 sons fathered of his body; for he had many wives.

30 And Gedeōn had 70 sons who came from his thighs, because he had many wives. 30 And Gedeōn had 70 sons who had come from his thighs, because he had many wives.

31 And his concubine who was in Shechem, also gave birth to a son by him. He called his name Abimelech.

31 And his concubine who was in Sikimōn, she indeed also bore him a son, and he named his name Abimelech. 31 And his concubine was in Sychem, and she indeed also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

32 And Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 And it happened, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the sons of Israēl turned again, and prostituted themselves after the Baals, and made Baalberith their god.

33 And it came to be, as Gedeōn died that the sons of Israēl turned away and prostituted themselves after the Baals and placed for themselves Baal-Berith for a covenant that he should be for a god to them. 33 And it came to be, just as Gedeōn died that the sons of Israēl reverted and prostituted themselves after the Baals, and they made a covenant for themselves with Baal that he should be for a god to them.

34 And the sons of Israēl didn’t remember Yahweh their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side.

34 And the sons of Israēl didn’t remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hand of all their enemies all around them, 34 And the sons of Israēl didn’t remember the Lord God, who had rescued them from the hand of all who oppressed them all around,

35 Neither did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed to Israēl.

35 and they didn’t do mercy with the house of Jerobaal Gedeōn in return for all the goodness that he had done with Israēl. 35 and they didn’t do mercy with the house of Jerobaal (he is Gedeōn) in return for all the good things that he had done with Israēl.
