1 And Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
1 And Abimelech son of Jerobaal went to Sikimōn to his mother’s brothers and spoke to them and to the whole family of his mother’s house, saying, | 1 And Abimelech son of Jerobaal went to Sychem to his mother’s brothers and spoke to them and to whole family of his mother’s father’s house, saying, |
2 “Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are 70 persons, reign over you, or that just one reign over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

2 “Please speak in the ears of the men of Sikimōn, ‛Which is better, that seventy men, all sons of Jerobaal, rule over you or that one man be lord over you?’ And remember that I am your flesh and your bone.” | 2 “Please speak in the ears of all the men of Sychem, ‛What is good for you, that seventy men, all sons of Jerobaal, be lord over you or that one man be lord over you?’ And remember that I am your bone and your flesh.” |
3 And his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the ears of all the men of Shechem. And their hearts were inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”
3 And the brothers of his mother spoke all these words about him in the ears of all the men of Sikimōn, and their heart inclined after Abimelech, because they said, “He is our brother.” | 3 And the brothers of his mother spoke all these words about him in the ears of all the men of Sychem, and their heart inclined after Abimelech, because they said, “He is our brother.” |
4 And they gave him 70 pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light persons, who followed him.
4 And they gave him seventy silver coins out of the house of Baal of a covenant, and Abimelech hired vain and alarming men with them, and they walked after him. | 4 And they gave him seventy silver coins out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hired for himself vain and cowardly men, and they walked after him. |
5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, 70 persons, on one stone. However Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, was left; for he hid himself.
5 And he entered into the house of his father at Ephratha and killed his brothers, sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, on one stone, and Jōatham, the youngest son of Jerobaal, was excluded because he hid. | 5 And he entered into the house of his father at Ephratha and killed his brothers, sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, on one stone, and Jōatham, the youngest son of Jerobaal, was left behind because he hid. |
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
6 And all the men of Sikimōn and all the house of Maallōn came together, and they went and made Abimelech for king by the acorn tree of dissension at Sikimōn. | 6 And all the men of Sikimōn and every household of Bethmaalōn came together, and they went and made Abimelech king by the acorn tree by the discovery of dissension at Sikimōn. |
7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and called and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
7 And they told Jōatham, and he went and stood on the top of Mount Garizin and raised his voice and called out and said to them, “Hear me, you men of Sikimōn, and may God hear you. | 7 And it was told to Jōathan, and he went and stood on the top of Mount Garizin and raised his voice and wept and said to them, “Hear me, you men of Sikimōn, and God will hear you. |
8 Once upon a time, the trees went forth to anoint a king over them. And they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign you over us.’
8 While going, the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. And they said to the olive tree, ‛Reign over us.’ | 8 While going out, the trees went out to anoint a king over themselves. And they said to the olive tree, ‛Reign over us.’ |
9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my fatness, by which Elohim and man are honoured, and go to be promoted over the trees?’
9 And the olive tree said to them, ‛Should I neglect my fatness, which God and men praise in me, and go to rule the trees?’ | 9 And the olive tree said to them, ‛Shall I abandon my fatness by which men praise God and go to sway over the trees?’ |
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come you! Reign over us.’
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‛Come, reign over us.’ | 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‛Come, reign over us.’ |
11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I give up my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?’
11 And the fig tree said to them, ‛Should I neglect my sweetness and my good produce and go to rule the trees?’ | 11 And the fig tree said to them, ‛Shall I abandon my sweetness and my good produce and go to sway over the trees?’ |
12 Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come you! Reign over us.’
12 And the trees said to the vine, ‛Come, reign over us.’ | 12 And the trees said to the vine, ‛Come, you reign over us.’ |
13 And the vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my wine, which cheers God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?’
13 And the vine said to them, ‛Should I neglect my wine, the good cheer of men which comes from God, and go to rule the trees?’ | 13 And the vine said to them, ‛Shall I abandon my wine, that cheers God and men, and go to sway over the trees?’ |
14 Then said all the trees to the bramble, ‘Come you! Reign over us.’
14 And the trees said to the bramble, ‛You come; reign over us.’ | 14 And all the trees said to the bramble, ‛You come; reign over us.’ |
15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‛If in good faith, you anoint me to rule over you, come and trust in my shade and if not, may fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ | 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‛If in good faith you anoint me to rule over you, come, and endure in my shade, and if not, let fire come from me and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ |
16 Now therefore, if you have done truly and sincerely, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands;
16 And now, if you acted in good faith and in perfection and made Abimelech king and if you dealt well with Jerobaal and with his house and if you have done to him according to the recompense of his hand, | 16 And now, if you acted in good faith and perfection and made Abimelech king and if you have acted with goodness with Jerobaal and his house and if you have done to him according to the recompense of his hand, |
17 (For my father fought for you, and risked his life, and saved you from the hand of Midian.
17 since my father fought for you and threw his life in opposition and rescued you from the hand of Madiam, | 17 since my father deployed troops for you and threw out his life in opposition and delivered you from the hand of Madiam, |
18 And you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, 70 persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
18 and you have risen up against the house of my father today and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Sikimōn, because he is your brother | 18 and you have risen up against the house of my father today and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Sikimōn, because he is your brother |
19 If you therefore have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
19 and if you acted in good faith and perfection with Jerobaal and his house this day, may you be blessed today and may you rejoice in Abimelech and may he also rejoice in you, | 19 and if you have acted in good faith and perfection with Jerobaal and with his house this day, then may you rejoice in Abimelech and may he indeed also rejoice over you, |
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.”
20 and if not, may fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Sikimōn and the house of Maallōn, and if not, may fire come from the men of Sikimōn and out of the house of Maallōn and devour Abimelech. | 20 but if not, may fire come from Abimelech and devour the men of Sikimōn and the house of Bethmaallōn, and let fire come from the men of Sikimōn and out from the house of Bethmaallōn and devour Abimelech. |
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
21 And Joatham ran away and went on a road and fled into Rhara and lived there away from before his brother Abimelech. | 21 And Joathan fled and ran away and went as far as Baiēr and lived there away from before his brother Abimelech. |
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israēl,
22 And Abimelech ruled over Israēl three years. | 22 And Abimelech ruled over Israēl three years. |
23 then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and between the men of Sikimōn, and the men of Sikimōn broke faith with the house of Abimelech, | 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and between the men of Sikimōn, and the men of Sikimōn broke faith with the house of Abimelech, |
24 so that the cruelty done to the 70 sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them; and on the men of Shechem, who aided him in the killing of his brothers.
24 to bring the injustice against the seventy sons of Jerobaal, to lay their blood on their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and on the men of Sikimōn, who strengthened his hands so that he killed his brothers. | 24 to bring the injustice against the seventy sons of Jerobaal and to lay their shed blood on their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and on the men of Sikimōn, because they strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. |
25 And the men of Shechem set men in ambush for him on the top of the mountains, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.
25 And the men of Sikimōn set ambushes against him on the mountain tops, and they would kidnap all who passed by them along that road, and it was reported to Abimelech. | 25 And the men of Sikimōn set an ambush against him on the mountain tops, and they would plunder everyone who was passing by them along that road, and it was reported to King Abimelech. |
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
26 And Gaal son of Abed and his brothers came into Sikimōn, and the men of Sikimōn had put confidence in him. | 26 And Gaal son of Jōbēl and his brothers came, and they entered Sikimōn, and the men of Sikimōn put their hope in him. |
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trampled the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
27 And they went into the field and gathered grapes from their vineyards and were trampling them and did dances. And they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and were cursing Abimelech. | 27 And they went out into the field and gathered grapes from their vineyards and trod them and made festival days and brought them into the house of their god and ate and drank and cursed Abimelech. |
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? And isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him?

29 If only this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” And he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army, and come out.”

49 And all the people did likewise. Each man cut down a branch and followed Abimelech. They laid them on the cellar and set fire on them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about 1000 men and women.
