Lamentations of Jeremiah

1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

אֲנִי הַגֶּבֶר רָאָה עֳנִי בְּשֵׁבֶט עֶבְרָתֹו׃

2 He has led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

אֹותִי נָהַג וַיֹּלַךְ חֹשֶׁךְ וְלֹא ־ אֹור׃

אַךְ בִּי יָשֻׁב יַהֲפֹךְ יָדֹו כָּל ־ הַיֹּום׃ ס

בִּלָּה בְשָׂרִי וְעֹורִי שִׁבַּר עַצְמֹותָי׃

בָּנָה עָלַי וַיַּקַּף רֹאשׁ וּתְלָאָה׃

בְּמַחֲשַׁכִּים הֹושִׁיבַנִי כְּמֵתֵי עֹולָם׃ ס

גָּדַר בַּעֲדִי וְלֹא אֵצֵא הִכְבִּיד נְחָשְׁתִּי׃

גַּם כִּי אֶזְעַק וַאֲשַׁוֵּעַ שָׂתַם תְּפִלָּתִי׃

דָּרַךְ קַשְׁתֹּו וַיַּצִּיבֵנִי כַּמַּטָּרָא לַחֵץ׃ ס

הֵבִיא בְּכִלְיֹותָי בְּנֵי אַשְׁפָּתֹו׃

הָיִיתִי שְּׂחֹק לְכָל ־ עַמִּי נְגִינָתָם כָּל ־ הַיֹּום׃

הִשְׂבִּיעַנִי בַמְּרֹורִים הִרְוַנִי לַעֲנָה׃ ס

וַיַּגְרֵס בֶּחָצָץ שִׁנָּי הִכְפִּישַׁנִי בָּאֵפֶר׃

17 And you have removed my soul far off from peace: I forgot prosperity.

וַתִּזְנַח מִשָּׁלֹום נַפְשִׁי נָשִׁיתִי טֹובָה׃

18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from Yahweh.

וָאֹמַר אָבַד נִצְחִי וְתֹוחַלְתִּי מֵיְהוָה׃ ס

19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

זְכָר ־ עָנְיִי וּמְרוּדִי לַעֲנָה וָרֹאשׁ׃

20 My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

זָכֹור תִּזְכֹּור וְתָשִׁיחַ עָלַי נַפְשִׁי׃

21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

זֹאת אָשִׁיב אֶל ־ לִבִּי עַל ־ כֵּן אֹוחִיל׃ ס

22 It is of Yahweh’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his mercies fail not.

טֹוב וְיָחִיל וְדוּמָם לִתְשׁוּעַת יְהוָה׃

לְדַכֵּא תַּחַת רַגְלָיו כֹּל אֲסִירֵי אָרֶץ׃

לְהַטֹּות מִשְׁפַּט ־ גָּבֶר נֶגֶד פְּנֵי עֶלְיֹון׃

36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approves not.

לְעַוֵּת אָדָם בְּרִיבֹו אֲדֹנָי לֹא רָאָה׃ ס

37 Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord commands it not?

39 Why does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

מַה ־ יִּתְאֹונֵן אָדָם חָי גֶּבֶר עַל ־ חֶטְאֹו

נַחְפְּשָׂה דְרָכֵינוּ וְנַחְקֹרָה וְנָשׁוּבָה עַד ־ יְהוָה׃

נִשָּׂא לְבָבֵנוּ אֶל ־ כַּפָּיִם אֶל ־ אֵל בַּשָּׁמָיִם׃

42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: you haven’t pardoned.

נַחְנוּ פָשַׁעְנוּ וּמָרִינוּ אַתָּה לֹא סָלָחְתָּ׃ ס

סַכֹּתָה בָאַף וַתִּרְדְּפֵנוּ הָרַגְתָּ לֹא חָמָלְתָּ׃
