Chapter3
The Purifier
1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me. and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in. behold, he shall come, says Yahweh of armies.
1 Look! I am sending out my messenger, and he will look on the way before my face. and suddenly the Lord whom you are seeking will come into the temple, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Look! he is coming, says the Lord Almighty. | 1 Look! I am sending out my messenger, and he will look on the way before my face. and suddenly the Lord whom you are seeking will come into the temple, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Look! he is coming, says the Lord Almighty. |
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap.

2 And who will endure the day of his coming? or who will withstand at his appearing? because he is coming in as the fire of a furnace and as the lye of washing. | 2 And who will endure the day of his coming? or who will withstand at his appearing? because he is coming in as the fire of a furnace and as the lye of washing. |
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver. and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to Yahweh an offering in righteousness.
3 He will sit, melting and purifying as it were silver, and as it were gold. and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver, and they will be bringing to the Lord a sacrifice in righteousness. | 3 He will sit, melting and purifying as it were silver, and as it were gold. and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver, and they will be bringing to the Lord a sacrifice in righteousness. |
4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant to Yahweh, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
4 And the sacrifice of Joudas and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord, just as in the days of the past, and just as in the former years. | 4 And the sacrifice of Joudas and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord, just as in the days of the past, and just as in the former years. |
5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who turn aside the stranger from his right, and don’t fear me, says Yahweh of armies.
5 And I will draw near to you in judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcereresses, and against the adulteresses, and against those who swear falsely by my name, and against those who withhold the wages of the hired man, and those who oppress the widow, and beat up orphans, and who pervert the justice of the stranger, and don’t fear me, says the Lord Almighty. |
6 For I am Yahweh, I change not; therefore you sons of Jacōb are not consumed.
6 Because I am the Lord your God, and I haven’t changed. but you sons of Jacōb are not keeping away | 6 Because I am the Lord your God, and I haven’t changed. |
7 Even from the days of your fathers you are gone away from my ordinances, and haven’t kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says Yahweh of armies. But you said, In what way shall we return?

You Have Robbed God
8 Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed me. But you say, In what way have we robbed you? In tithes and offerings.

9 You are cursed with a curse; for you have robbed me, even this whole nation.
9 While looking, you look and you cheat me. The year is finished. | 9 While looking, you look and you cheat me. The year is finished. |
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and prove me now herewith, says Yahweh of armies, if I won’t open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

10 You have brought all the produce into the storehouses; and its plunder will be in his house. After paying attention to this, says the Lord Almighty, please see if I won’t open to you the torrents of the sky, and pour out my blessing on you, until you are satisfied. | 10 You have brought all the produce into the storehouses; and its plunder will be in his house. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, says Yahweh of armies.

12 And all nations shall call you blessed. for you shall be a delightsome land, says Yahweh of armies.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed. because you will be a desired land, says the Lord Almighty. | 12 And all nations shall call you blessed. because you will be a desired land, says the Lord Almighty. |
13 Your words have been stout against me, says Yahweh. Yet you say, What have we spoken so much against you?
13 You have made your words heavy against me, says the Lord. Yet you said, “In what way have we spoken against you?” | 13 You have made your words heavy against me, says the Lord. Yet you said, “In what way have we spoken against you?” |
14 You have said, It is vain to serve God. and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before Yahweh of armies?
14 You said, “He who serves God is useless. and what have we more by keeping his ordinances, and that we walked as suppliants before the face of the Lord Almighty? | 14 You said, “He who serves God is useless. and what have we more by keeping his ordinances, and that we walked as suppliants before the face of the Lord Almighty? |
15 And now we call the proud happy; yes, they who work wickedness are set up; yes, they who tempt God are even delivered.
15 And now we call strangers blessed; and all they who practice lawlessness are built up; and they have resisted God, and yet have been preserved.” | 15 And now we call strangers blessed; and all they who practice lawlessness are built up; and they are against God, and yet have been preserved.” |
The Book of Remembrance
16 Then they who feared Yahweh spoke often one to another. and Yahweh listened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for those who feared Yahweh, and who thought on his name.
16 The men who feared the Lord spoke these things, each to his neighbour. And the Lord paid attention and listened, and he wrote a book of remembrance before him for those who feared the Lord and reverenced his name. | 16 The men who feared the Lord spoke these things, each to his neighbour. And the Lord paid attention and listened, and he wrote a book of remembrance before him for those who feared the Lord and reverenced his name. |
17 And they shall be mine, says Yahweh of armies, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.
17 And they will be mine, says the Lord Almighty, in the day which I made for a possession; and I will choose them, as a man chooses his son who serves him. | 17 And they will be mine, says the Lord Almighty, in the day which I made for a possession; and I will choose them, as a man chooses his son who serves him. |
18 Then you shall return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.
18 Then you will return, and discern between the righteous and the lawless, and between him who serves God, and him who doesn’t serve. | 18 Then you will return, and discern between the righteous and the lawless, and between him who serves God, and him who doesn’t serve. |
