Assyria Is God’s Instrument

1 Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;

1 Woe to those who write evil! For while they write, they write evil, 1 Woe to those who write evil! For while they write, they write evil,

2 To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

2 turning away the cause of the poor, seizing justice from the needy among my people so that a widow becomes their spoil and an orphan their plunder. 2 turning away the cause of the poor, seizing justice from the needy among my people so that a widow becomes their spoil and an orphan their plunder.

3 And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your glory?

3 καὶ τί ποιήσουσιν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς;
γὰρ θλῖψις ὑμῖν πόρρωθεν ἥξει· καὶ πρὸς τίνα καταφεύξεσθε τοῦ βοηθηθῆναι;
3 καὶ τί ποιήσουσιν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς;
γὰρ θλῖψις ὑμῖν πόρρωθεν ἥξει· καὶ πρὸς τίνα καταφεύξεσθε τοῦ βοηθηθῆναι;
3 What will they do on the day of visitation? For the affliction will come to you from far away. And to whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your glory, 3 What will they do on the day of visitation? For the affliction will come to you from far away. And to whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your glory,

4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

4 τοῦ μὴ ἐμπεσεῖν εἰς ἐπαγωγήν;
4 τοῦ μὴ ἐμπεσεῖν εἰς ἐπαγωγήν;
4 so as not to fall into distress? For all this, the wrath has not turned away, but his hand is still uplifted. 4 so as not to fall into distress? For all this, the wrath has not turned away, but his hand is still uplifted.

5 Oh Assyrian, the rod of my anger, and the staff in their hand is my indignation.

5 Woe to the Assyrians! The rod of my wrath and anger is in their hands. 5 Woe to the Assyrians! The rod of my wrath and anger is in their hands.

6 I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

6 I will send my anger against a lawless nation, and I will order my people to take spoils and plunder and to trample down the cities and turn them into dust. 6 I will send my anger against a lawless nation, and I will order my people to take spoils and plunder and to trample down the cities and turn them into dust.

7 However he doesn’t mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

7 But he didn’t plan thus, nor has he reasoned thus in his soul, but his mind will change, and to devastate nations not a few. 7 But he didn’t plan thus, nor has he reasoned thus in his soul, but his mind will change, and to devastate nations not a few.

8 For he says, Are not my princes altogether kings?

8 And if they say to him, “You alone are ruler,” 8 And if they say to him, “You alone are ruler,”

9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

9 καὶ ἐρεῖ οὐκ ἔλαβον τὴν χώραν τὴν ἐπάνω Βαβυλῶνος καὶ Χαλάννη, οὗ πύργος ᾠκοδομήθη;
9 καὶ ἐρεῖ· οὐκ ἔλαβον τὴν χώραν τὴν ἐπάνω Βαβυλῶνος καὶ Χαλάνης, οὗ πύργος ᾠκοδομήθη;
9 then he will say, “Didn’t I take the country above Babylōn and Chalannē, where the tower was built? And I took Arabia and Damascus and Samaria. 9 then he will say, “Didn’t I take the country above Babylōn and Chalannē, where the tower was built? And I took Arabia and Damascus and Samaria.

10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose carved images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

10 In the manner, I took these in my hand, I will also take all the rulers. Howl, you carved images in Jerousalēm and in Samaria! 10 In the manner, I took these in my hand, I will also take all the rulers. Howl, you carved images in Jerousalēm and in Samaria!

11 Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

11 For as I did to Samaria and to her handcrafted things, thus I will also do to Jerousalēm and to her idols.” 11 For as I did to Samaria and to her handcrafted things, thus I will also do to Jerousalēm and to her idols.”

12 Therefore it will happen, that when the Lord has performed his whole work on mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

12 And it shall be that when the Lord has finished doing all the things on the mountain of Siōn and in Jerousalēm, he will bring punishment on the great mind, the leader of the Assyrians, and against the height of the glory of his eyes. 12 And it shall be that when the Lord has finished doing all the things on the mountain of Siōn and in Jerousalēm, he will bring punishment on the great mind, the leader of the Assyrians, and against the height of the glory of his eyes.

13 For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent; and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.

13 For he said. “By my strength I will do it, and by the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the borders of nations, and I will plunder their strength and I will shake inhabited cities. 13 For he said. “By my strength I will do it, and by the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the borders of nations, and I will plunder their strength.

14 And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people; and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

14 and with my hand, I will seize with the whole inhabited world like a nest and seize its inhabitants like eggs that have been forsaken, and there is none who will escape from me or dispute with me.” 14 and I will shake inhabited cities. and with my hand, I will seize with the whole inhabited world like a nest and seize its inhabitants like eggs that have been forsaken, and there is none who will escape from me or dispute with me.”

15 Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him who shakes it? As if the rod should shake itself against those who lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

15 μὴ δοξασθήσεται ἀξίνη ἄνευ τοῦ κόπτοντος ἐν αὐτῇ;
ὑψωθήσεται πρίων ἄνευ τοῦ ἕλκοντος αὐτόν;
15 μὴ δοξασθήσεται ἀξίνη ἄνευ τοῦ κόπτοντος ἐν αὐτῇ;
ὑψωθήσεται πρίων ἄνευ τοῦ ἕλκοντος αὐτόν;
15 Shall an axe be glorified without the one who cuts with it or a saw be exalted without the one who pulls it? Just like it would be if someone were to lift a rod or a log. 15 Shall an axe be glorified without the one who cuts with it or a saw be exalted without the one who pulls it? Just like it would be if someone were to lift a rod or a log.

16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of armies, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

16 And not so! But the Lord Sabaōth will send dishonour on your honour, and a burning fire will burn on your glory. 16 And not so! But the Lord Sabaōth will send dishonour on your honour, and a burning fire will burn on your glory.

17 And the light of Israēl shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

17 The light of Israēl will become a fire, and it will sanctify him with a burning fire and devour the forest like grass. On that day 17 The light of Israēl will become a fire, and it will sanctify him with a burning fire and devour the forest like grass.

18 And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a standard-bearer faints.

18 the mountains and the hills and the forests will be extinguished, and it will consume them from the soul to the flesh, and the one who flees will be like the one who flees from a burning flame. 18 On that day, the mountains and the hills and the forests will be extinguished, and it will consume them from the soul to the flesh, and the one who flees will be like the one who flees from a burning flame.

19 And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

19 And those who are left from them will be a number, and a child will write them down. 19 And those who are left from them will be a number, and a child will write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 And it will happen in that day, that the remnant of Israēl, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacōb, shall no more again stay on him who smote them; but shall stay on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israēl, in truth.

20 And it shall be on that day that those of Israēl who remain will no longer be added, and those of Jakōb who have been saved will no more trust in those who have wronged them but will trust in God, the Holy One of Israēl, in truth. 20 And it shall be on that day that those of Israēl who remain will no longer be added, and those of Jakōb who have been saved will no more trust in those who have wronged them but will trust in God, the Holy One of Israēl, in truth.

21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacōb, to the mighty God.

21 And those who remain of Jakōb will be on the mighty God. 21 And those who remain of Jakōb will be on the mighty God.

22 For though your people Israēl be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

22 And if the people of Israēl become like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved, for while he is fulfilling his word, he is limiting righteousness. 22 And if the people of Israēl become like the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved, for while he is fulfilling his word, he is limiting righteousness.

23 For Adonai Yahweh of armies shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

23 because God will perform his word shortly in the whole inhabited world. 23 because the Lord will perform his word shortly in the whole inhabited world.

24 Therefore thus says Adonai Yahweh of armies, Oh my people that dwells in Zion, don’t be afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite you with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Egypt.

24 Therefore this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. Oh my people, who live in Siōn, don’t be afraid of the Assyrians, because he will strike you with a rod, for I am bringing a stroke on you so that you may see the way of Egypt. 24 Therefore this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. Oh my people, who live in Siōn, don’t be afraid of the Assyrians, because he will strike you with a rod, for I am bringing a stroke on you so that you may see the way of Egypt.

25 For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and my anger in their destruction.

25 For yet a little while and the anger will cease, but my wrath will be on their plan. 25 For yet a little while and the anger will cease, but my wrath will be on their plan.

26 And Yahweh of armies shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and as his rod was on the sea, so he shall lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

26 God will awaken against them, according to the stroke of Madiam at the place of affliction, and his wrath will be by the way of the sea, on the way toward Egypt. 26 God will awaken against them, according to the stroke of Madiam at the place of affliction, and his wrath will be by the way of the sea, on the way toward Egypt.

27 And it will happen in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

27 And it shall be on that day that the fear of him will be removed from you, and his yoke from your shoulder, and the yoke will be destroyed from your shoulders. 27 And it shall be on that day that the fear of him will be removed from you, and his yoke from your shoulder, and the yoke will be destroyed from your shoulders.

28 He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he has laid up his carriages.

28 For he will come to the city of Aggai and shall pass on to Magedō, and shall put his supplies in Machmas. 28 For he will come to the city of Aggai

29 They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

29 and he will go by the valley and come to Aggai; fear will grip Rhama, the city of Saoul. 29 and shall pass on to Maggedō, and shall put his supplies in Machmas. and he will go by the valley and come to Aggai; fear will grip Rhama, the city of Saoul.

30 Lift up your voice, Oh daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard to Laish, Oh poor Anathoth.

30 The daughter of Gallim will flee; Laisa will listen; Anathōth will listen. 30 The daughter of Galleim will flee; Laisa will listen; Anathōth will listen.

31 Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.

31 Madebēna is startled; also the inhabitants of Gibbir. 31 Madebēna is startled; also the inhabitants of Gibbir.

32 As yet he shall remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

32 Encourage Siōn today to remain in the way; with the hand, encourage the mountain, the daughter of Siōn, and the hills that are in Jerousalēm, 32 Encourage Siōn today to remain in the way; with the hand, encourage the mountain, the daughter of Siōn, and the hills that are in Jerousalēm,

33 Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of armies, shall lop the bough with terror; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

33

33 For look! the Sovereign, the Lord Sabaōth, will confound the most honourable with strength, and the lofty will be crushed in their insolence, and the lofty will be brought low. 33 For look! the Sovereign, the Lord Sabaōth, will confound the most honourable with strength, and the lofty will be crushed in their insolence, and the lofty will be brought low.

34 And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

34 and the lofty ones shall fall by the sword, and the Libanon shall fall with his lofty ones. 34 and the lofty ones shall fall by the sword, and the Libanon shall fall with his lofty ones.
