Authority of Jesus Questioned
(Matt 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33)
And it happened on one of the days while he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes along with the elders confronted him, | And it happened on one of those days while he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes along with the elders confronted him, |
and they spoke, saying to him, “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?” | and they spoke, saying to him, “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?” |
And in response, he said to them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: | And in response, he said to them, “I will also ask you one question, and you tell me: |
Was the baptism of Jōhn from heaven or from men?” | Was the baptism of Jōhn from heaven or from men?” |
They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ | They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ |
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that Jōhn was a prophet.” | But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that Jōhn was a prophet.” |
So they answered that they didn’t know where it came from. | So they answered that they didn’t know where it came from. |
And Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” | And Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” |
Parable of the Vineyard and the Tenants
(Matt 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12)
And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a trip for a long time. | And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a trip for a long time. |
At the season, he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but after beating him, the vine-growers sent him away empty. | At the season, he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but after beating him, the vine-growers sent him away empty. |
And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. |
And he proceeded to send a third; and after wounding this one also, they cast him out. | And he proceeded to send a third; and after wounding this one also, they cast him out. |
δὲ
ὁ
τοῦ
τί
The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect this one.’ | The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps after seeing this one, they will respect him.’ |
But after seeing him, the vine-growers reasoned with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will become ours.’ | But after seeing him, the vine-growers reasoned with themselves, saying, ‘Come! This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will become ours.’ |
20:15 καὶ
ἔξω
τοῦ

So after throwing him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? | So after throwing him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? |

He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” After hearing it, they said, “Certainly not!” | He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” After hearing it, they said, “Certainly not!” |
But after looking at them, he said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone[1]’? |
But after looking at them, he said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone[1]’? |
Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken apart; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” | Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken apart; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” |
The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that he spoke this parable against them. | The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that he spoke this parable against them. |
Paying Taxes to Caesar
(Matt 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17)
So after watching him, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch him in a statement, so that they could deliver him to the rule and the authority of the governor. | So after watching him, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch him in a statement, so that they could deliver him to the rule and the authority of the governor. |
They asked him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you are not prejudiced, but teach the way of God in truth. | They asked him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you are not prejudiced, but teach the way of God in truth. |
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” | Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” |
But after perceiving their craftiness, he said to them, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, “Why do you tempt me? |
μοι

“Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” | Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” In response, they said, “Caesar’s.” |
And he said to them, “Then deliver to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.” | And he said to them, “Then deliver to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.” |
And they were unable to catch him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at his answer, they kept silent. | And they were unable to catch him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at his answer, they kept silent. |
Question about the Resurrection
(Matt 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27)
Now after approaching, some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), asked him, | Now after approaching, some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), asked him, |
saying, “Teacher, Mōsēs wrote to us that if someone’s brother dies, having a wife, and this one is childless, his brother should take his wife and raise up children to his brother.[2] | saying, “Teacher, Mōsēs wrote to us that if someone’s brother dies, having a wife, and this one dies childless, his brother should take his wife and raise up children to his brother.[2] |
Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless; | Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless; |
and the third took her; and likewise also the seven, they died, leaving no children. | and the third took her; and likewise also the seven, they died, leaving no children. |
Afterward the woman died too. | Afterward all died and the woman. |
20:33 ἡ
οὖν
ἐν
τῇ

In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will the woman be? For all seven had her as wife.” | In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife.” |
Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, | And in response, Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, |
but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; | but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; |
for they are not even able to die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. | for they are not even able to die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. |
But that the dead are raised, even Mōsēs showed, in the passage of the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and God of Isaac, and God of Jacōb.[3] | But that the dead are raised, even Mōsēs showed, in the passage of the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacōb.[3] |
Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to him.” | Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to him.” |
In response, some of the scribes said, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” | In response, some of the scribes said, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” |
For they did not dare to question him any longer about anything. | But they did not dare to question him any longer about anything. |
Then he said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son? | Then he said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son? |
For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, | For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, |
Until I put your enemies for a footstool of your feet.”’[4] | Until I put your enemies for a footstool of your feet.”’[4] |
Therefore David calls him ‘Lord,’ and how is he his son?” | Therefore David calls him ‘Lord,’ and how is he his son?” |

And while all the people were listening, he said to his disciples, | And while all the people were listening, he said to his disciples, |
