1 King Baltasar made a great feast for his associates.	1 Baltasar the king made a great supper for his thousand nobles, and there was wine before the thousand.

2  Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink in it.

2 And he was drinking wine, and his heart was exalted, and he said to bring the gold and silver vessels of the house of God that his father Nabouchodonosor had brought from Jerousalem and to pour wine in them for his associates.	2 And Baltasar drinking gave orders as he tasted the wine that they should bring the gold and silver vessels, which Nabouchodonosor his father had brought forth from the temple in Jerusalem; that the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, should drink out of them.

3  Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

3 καὶ ἠνέχθη, καὶ ἔπινον ἐν αὐτοῖς	3  καὶ ἠνέχθησαν τὰ σκεύη τὰ χρυσᾶ καὶ τὰ ἀργυρᾶ, ἃ ἐξήνεγκεν ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἔπινον ἐν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ οἱ μεγιστᾶνες αὐτοῦ, καὶ αἱ παλλακαὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ αἱ παράκοιτοι αὐτοῦ.
3 And they were brought, and they were drinking with them.	3 So the gold and silver vessels were brought which Nabouchodonosor had taken out of the temple of God in Jerusalem; and the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, drank out of them.

4  They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

4 καὶ ηὐλόγουν τὰ εἴδωλα τὰ χειροποίητα αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸν θεὸν τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ εὐλόγησαν τὸν ἔχοντα τὴν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτῶν.	4  ἔπινον οἶνον· καὶ ᾔνεσαν τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς χρυσοῦς, καὶ ἀργυροῦς, καὶ χαλκοῦς, καὶ σιδηροῦς, καὶ ξυλίνους, καὶ λιθίνους.
4 And they blessed their handmade idols, and they did not bless the eternal God who had authority over their spirit.	4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, and of copper-alloy, and of iron, and of wood, and of stone.

5  In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

5 ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐξῆλθον δάκτυλοι ὡσεὶ χειρὸς ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἔγραψαν ἐπὶ τοῦ τοίχου τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ κονιάματος κατέναντι τοῦ φωτὸς ἔναντι τοῦ βασιλέως Βαλτασάρ, καὶ εἶδε χεῖρα γράφουσαν	5  ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐξῆλθον δάκτυλοι χειρὸς ἀνθρώπου, καὶ ἔγραφον κατέναντι τῆς λαμπάδος ἐπὶ τὸ κονίαμα τοῦ τοίχου τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐθεώρει τοὺς ἀστραγάλους τῆς χειρὸς τῆς γραφούσης.
5 In that very same hour fingers, as though of a human hand, came forth and wrote on the wall of his house, on the plaster opposite the light, facing King Baltasar. And he saw a hand writing,	5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man᾿s hand, and wrote in front of the lamp on the plaster of the wall of the king᾿s house; and the king saw the knuckles of the hand that wrote.

6  Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

6 καὶ ἡ ὅρασις αὐτοῦ ἠλλοιώθη, καὶ φόβοι καὶ ὑπόνοιαι αὐτὸν κατέσπευδον. ἔσπευσεν οὖν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἐξανέστη καὶ ἑώρα τὴν γραφὴν ἐκείνην, καὶ οἱ συνεταῖροι κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ ἐκαυχῶντο.	6  τότε τοῦ βασιλέως ἡ μορφὴ ἠλλοιώθη, καὶ οἱ διαλογισμοὶ αὐτοῦ συνετάρασσον αὐτόν, καὶ οἱ σύνδεσμοι τῆς ὀσφύος αὐτοῦ διελύοντο, καὶ τὰ γόνατα αὐτοῦ συνεκροτοῦντο.
6 and his appearance was changed, and foreboding pressed him. Therefore, the king hurried and stood up and kept looking at that writing, and his companions spoke loudly around him.	6 Then the king᾿s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one another.

7  The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spoke, and said to the wise men of Babylōn, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me the interpretation of it, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

7 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐφώνησε φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καλέσαι τοὺς ἐπαοιδοὺς καὶ φαρμακοὺς καὶ Χαλδαίους καὶ γαζαρηνοὺς ἀπαγγεῖλαι τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς. καὶ εἰσεπορεύοντο ἐπὶ θεωρίαν ἰδεῖν τὴν γραφήν, καὶ τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς οὐκ ἐδύναντο συγκρῖναι τῷ βασιλεῖ. τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐξέθηκε πρόσταγμα λέγων πᾶς ἀνήρ, ὃς ἄν ὑποδείξῃ τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς, στολιεῖ αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ μανιάκην χρυσοῦν περιθήσει αὐτῷ καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ, ἐξουσία τοῦ τρίτου μέρους τῆς βασιλείας.

7  καὶ ἐβόησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν ἰσχύϊ, τοῦ εἰσαγαγεῖν μάγους, Χαλδαίους, γαζαρηνούς· καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς σοφοῖς Βαβυλῶνος, ὃς ἄν ἀναγνῷ τὴν γραφὴν ταύτην, καὶ τὴν σύγκρισιν γνωρίσῃ μοι, πορφύραν ἐνδύσεται, καὶ ὁ μανιάκης ὁ χρυσοῦς ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τρίτος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου ἄρξει.

7 And the king called in a loud voice that the enchanters and sorcerers and Chaldeans and Gazarenes be summoned to tell the meaning of the writing. And they came to the spectacle to see the writing, and they were unable to interpret the meaning of the writing for the king. Then the king published a declaration, saying: Anyone who can explain the meaning of the writing—he will dress him in purple, and the gold torque he will put on him, and authority over a third of the kingdom will be given to him.

7 And the king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; and he said to the wise men of Babylōn, Whoever shall read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation, shall be clothed with scarlet, and there shall be a golden chain on his neck, and he shall be the third ruler in my kingdom.

8  Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they couldn’t read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation of it.

8 καὶ εἰσεπορεύοντο οἱ ἐπαοιδοὶ καὶ φαρμακοὶ καὶ γαζαρηνοί, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο οὐδεὶς τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς ἀπαγγεῖλαι.	8  καὶ εἰσεπορεύοντο πάντες οἱ σοφοὶ τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο τὴν γραφὴν ἀναγνῶναι, οὐδὲ τὴν σύγκρισιν γνωρίσαι τῷ βασιλεῖ.
8 And the enchanters and sorcerers and Gazarenes came in, and none was able to tell the meaning of the writing.	8 Then came in all the king᾿s wise men; but they couldn’t read the writing, nor make known the interpretation to the king.

9  Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonished.

9 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐκάλεσε τὴν βασίλισσαν περὶ τοῦ σημείου καὶ ὑπέδειξεν αὐτῇ, ὡς μέγα ἐστί, καὶ ὅτι πᾶς ἄνθρωπος οὐ δύναται ἀπαγγεῖλαι τῷ βασιλεῖ τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς.	9  καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Βαλτασὰρ πολὺ ἐταράχθη, καὶ ἡ μορφὴ αὐτοῦ ἠλλοιώθη ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ, καὶ οἱ μεγιστᾶνες αὐτοῦ συνεταράσσοντο.
9 Then the king summoned the queen about the sign, and he explained to her how large it was and that no person was able to tell the king the meaning of the writing.	9 And king Baltasar was troubled, and his countenance changed on him, and his nobles were troubled with him.

10  Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house; and the queen spoke and said, Oh king, live forever: don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance be changed.

10 τότε ἡ βασίλισσα ἐμνήσθη πρὸς αὐτὸν περὶ τοῦ Δανιήλ, ὃς ἦν ἐκ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας τῆς Ἰουδαίας,	10  καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἡ βασίλισσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πότου, καὶ εἶπεν, βασιλεῦ, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ζῆθι· μὴ ταρασσέτωσάν σὲ οἱ διαλογισμοί σου, καὶ ἡ μορφή σου μὴ ἀλλοιούσθω.
10 Then the queen reminded him concerning Daniēl who was among the captives of Judea.	10 Then the queen came into the banquet house, and said, Oh king, live forever: don’t let your thoughts trouble you, and don’t let your countenance be changed.

11  There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

11 καὶ εἶπε τῷ βασιλεῖ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐπιστήμων ἦν καὶ σοφὸς καὶ ὑπερέχων πάντας τοὺς σοφοὺς Βαβυλῶνος,	11  ἔστιν ἀνὴρ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου, ἐν ᾧ πνεῦμα θεοῦ· καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τοῦ πατρός σου, γρηγόρησις καὶ σύνεσις εὑρέθη ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ναβουχοδονόσορ ὁ πατήρ σου ἄρχοντα ἐπαοιδῶν, μάγων, Χαλδαίων, γαζαρηνῶν, κατέστησεν αὐτόν,
11 And she said to the king, “That person was prudent and wise and surpassed all the sages of Babylōn,	11 There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the Spirit of God; and in the days of your father watchfullness and understanding were found in him; and king Nabouchodonosor your father made him chief of the enchanters, magicians, Chaldeans, and soothsayers.

12  Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniēl, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniēl be called, and he will show the interpretation.

12 καὶ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐν αὐτῷ ἐστι, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τοῦ πατρός σου τοῦ βασιλέως συγκρίματα ὑπέρογκα ὑπέδειξε Ναβουχοδονόσορ τῷ πατρί σου.	12  ὅτι πνεῦμα περισσὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ φρόνησις καὶ σύνεσις συγκρίνων ἐνύπνια, καὶ ἀναγγέλλων κρατούμενα, καὶ λύων συνδέσμους, Δανιήλ· καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπέθηκεν αὐτῷ ὄνομα, Βαλτασάρ· νῦν οὖν κληθήτω, καὶ τὴν σύγκρισιν αὐτοῦ ἀναγγελεῖ σοι.
12 and a holy spirit is in him. And in the days of your father the king he explained difficult meanings to Nabouchodonosor your father.”	12 For there is an excellent spirit in him, and sense and understanding in him, interpreting dreams as he does, and answering hard questions, and solving difficulties: it is Daniēl, and the king gave him the name of Baltasar: now then let him be called, and he shall tell you the interpretation of the writing.

13  Then was Daniēl brought in before the king. And the king spoke and said to Daniēl, Are you who Daniēl, which are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

13 τότε Δανιὴλ εἰσήχθη πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ	13  τότε Δανιὴλ εἰσήχθη ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Δανιήλ, σὺ εἶ Δανιήλ, ὁ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας τῆς Ἰουδαίας, ἧς ἤγαγεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ὁ πατήρ μου;
13 Then Daniēl was brought in to the king. And answering the king said to him,	13 Then Daniēl was brought in before the king; and the king said to Daniēl, Are you Daniēl, of the children of the captivity of Judea, which the king my father brought?

14  I have even heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in you.

16  And I have heard of you, that you can make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if you can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, you shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

16 ὦ Δανιήλ, δύνῃ μοι ὑποδεῖξαι τὸ σύγκριμα τῆς γραφῆς; καὶ στολιῶ σὲ πορφύραν καὶ μανιάκην χρυσοῦν περιθήσω σοι, καὶ ἕξεις ἐξουσίαν τοῦ τρίτου μέρους τῆς βασιλείας μου.	16  καὶ ἐγὼ ἤκουσα περὶ σοῦ, ὅτι δύνασαι κρίματα συγκρῖναι· νῦν οὖν ἐὰν δυνηθῇς τὴν γραφὴν ἀναγνῶναι, καὶ τὴν σύγκρισιν αὐτῆς γνωρίσαι μοι, πορφύραν ἐνδύσῃ, καὶ ὁ μανιάκης ὁ χρυσοῦς ἔσται ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλόν σου, καὶ τρίτος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου ἄρξεις.
16 “O Daniēl, are you able to explain to me the interpretation of the writing? And I shall dress you in purple, and a gold torque I shall put on you, and you will have authority over a third part of my kingdom.” King Baltasar made a great dinner for a thousand of his nobles, and the wine was before the thousand.	16 And I have heard concerning you, that you are able to make interpretations: now then if you shall be able to read the writing, and to make known to me the interpretation of it, you shall be clothed with purple, and there shall be a golden chain on your neck, and you shall be third ruler in my kingdom.

17  Then Daniēl answered and said before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

17 τότε Δανιὴλ ἔστη κατέναντι τῆς γραφῆς καὶ ἀνέγνω καὶ οὕτως ἀπεκρίθη τῷ βασιλεῖ αὕτη ἡ γραφή ἠρίθμηται, κατελογίσθη, ἐξῆρται· καὶ ἔστη ἡ γράψασα χείρ. καὶ αὕτη ἡ σύγκρισις αὐτῶν.	17  τότε ἀπεκρίθη Δανιὴλ καὶ εἶπεν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως, τὰ δόματά σου σοὶ ἔστω, καὶ τὴν δωρεὰν τῆς οἰκίας σου ἑτέρῳ δός, ἐγὼ δὲ τὴν γραφὴν ἀναγνώσομαι, τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ τὴν σύγκρισιν αὐτῆς γνωρίσω σοι,
17 Then Daniēl stood in front of the writing and read, and thus he answered the king, “This is the writing: it has been numbered; it has been reckoned; it has been taken away. And the writing hand ceased, and this is their interpretation.	17 And Daniēl said, before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give the present of your house to another; but I will read the writing, and will make known to you the interpretation of it.

18  Oh you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour.

19 TBA	19 and by reason of the majesty which he gave to him, all nations, tribes, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed; and whom he would he smote; and whom he would he exalted; and whom he would he abased.

20  But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

21  And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appoints over it whomever he will.

23  But have lifted up yourself against Yahweh of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you, and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine in them; and you have praised the gods of silver, and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you haven’t glorified.

23 βασιλεῦ, σὺ ἐποιήσω ἑστιατορίαν τοῖς φίλοις σου καὶ ἔπινες οἶνον, καὶ τὰ σκεύη τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἠνέχθη σοι, καὶ ἐπίνετε ἐν αὐτοῖς σὺ καὶ οἱ μεγιστᾶνές σου καὶ ᾐνέσατε πάντα τὰ εἴδωλα τὰ χειροποίητα τῶν ἀνθρώπων· καὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ ζῶντι οὐκ εὐλογήσατε, καὶ τὸ πνεῦμά σου ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὸ βασίλειόν σου αὐτὸς ἔδωκέ σοι, καὶ οὐκ εὐλόγησας αὐτὸν οὐδὲ ᾔνεσας αὐτῷ.

23  καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὑψώθης, καὶ τὰ σκεύη τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ ἤνεγκαν ἐνώπιόν σου, καὶ σὺ καὶ οἱ μεγιστᾶνές σου, καὶ αἱ παλλακαί σου, καὶ αἱ παράκοιτοί σου οἶνον ἐπίνετε ἐν αὐτοῖς· καὶ τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς χρυσοῦς, καὶ ἀργυροῦς, καὶ χαλκοῦς, καὶ σιδηροῦς, καὶ ξυλίνους, καὶ λιθίνους, οἳ οὐ βλέπουσιν, καὶ οὐκ ἀκούουσιν, καὶ οὐ γινώσκουσιν, ᾔνεσας, καὶ τὸν θεόν οὗ ἡ πνοή σου ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοί σου, αὐτὸν οὐκ ἐδόξασας.

23 O King, you made a feast for your Friends, and you were drinking wine, and the vessels of the house of the living God were brought to you, and you were drinking with them, you and your nobles. And you praised all the idols made by human hands, and you did not bless the living God. And your spirit is in his hand, and he himself gave to you your reign, and you did not bless him nor praise him.

23 And you have been exalted against the Lord God of heaven; and they have brought before you the vessels of his house, and you, and your nobles, and your mistresses, and your concubines, have drunk wine out of them; and you have praised the gods of gold, and silver, and copper-alloy, and iron, and wood, and stone, which don’t see, and which don’t hear, and don’t know; and the God in whose hand are your breath, and all your ways has you not glorified.

24  Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

29  Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniēl with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

29 τότε Βαλτασὰρ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐνέδυσε τὸν Δανιὴλ πορφύραν καὶ μανιάκην χρυσοῦν περιέθηκεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἔδωκεν ἐξουσίαν αὐτῷ τοῦ τρίτου μέρους τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ.	29  καὶ εἶπεν Βαλτασάρ, καὶ ἐνέδυσαν τὸν Δανιὴλ πορφύραν, καὶ τὸν μανιάκην τὸν χρυσοῦν περιέθηκαν περὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκήρυξεν περὶ αὐτοῦ, εἶναι αὐτὸν ἄρχοντα τρίτον ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ.
29 Then Baltasar the king clothed Daniēl in purple, and he put a gold torque on him, and he gave him authority over a third part of his kingdom.	29 Then Baltasar commanded, and they clothed Daniēl with scarlet, and put the golden chain about his neck, and proclaimed concerning him that he was the third ruler in the kingdom.

30  In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

30 καὶ τὸ σύγκριμα ἐπῆλθε Βαλτασὰρ τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ τὸ βασίλειον ἐξῆρται ἀπὸ τῶν Χαλδαίων καὶ ἐδόθη τοῖς Μήδοις καὶ τοῖς Πέρσαις.	30  ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ νυκτὶ ἀναιρέθη Βαλτασὰρ ὁ βασιλεὺς ὁ Χαλδαίων,
30 And the meaning came on Baltasar the king, and the rule was taken away from the Chaldeans and was given to the Medes and to the Persians,	30 In the same night was Baltasar the Chaldean king slain.

31 καὶ Ἀρταξέρξης ὁ τῶν Μήδων παρέλαβε τὴν βασιλείαν.	31  καὶ Δαρεῖος ὁ Μῆδος παρέλαβεν τὴν βασιλείαν ὢν ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα δύο.
