topDaniel ch 4

Chapter 4

Old Greek Theodotion

1 [M 3:31]  Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied to you.

1 TBA 1 King Nabouchodonosor to all nations, tribes, and tongues, who dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied to you.

2 [M 3:32]  I thought it good to show the signs and wonders that the high God has wrought toward me.

2 TBA 2 It seemed good to me to declare to you the signs and wonders which the most high God has wrought with me,

3 [M 3:33]  How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

3 TBA 3 how great and mighty they are: his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his power to all generations.

4 [M 4:1]  I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

4 In the eighteenth year of his reign, Nabouchodonosor said, “I was living at peace in my home and prospering on my throne. 4 I Nabouchodonosor was thriving in my house, and prospering.

5 [M 4:2]  I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

5 I saw a dream, and I was alarmed, and fear fell on me. 5 I saw a vision, and it terrified me, and I was troubled on my bed, and the visions of my head troubled me.

6 [M 4:3]  Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylōn before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

6 TBA 6 And I made a decree to bring in before me all the wise men of Babylōn, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

7 [M 4:4]  Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they didn’t make known to me the interpretation of it.

7 TBA 7 So the enchanters, magicians, soothsayers, and Chaldeans came in; and I told the dream before them; but they didn’t make known to me the interpretation of it;

8 [M 4:5]  But at the last Daniēl came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and before him I told the dream, saying,

8 TBA 8 until Daniēl came, whose name is Baltasar, according to the name of my God, who has within him the Holy Spirit of God; to whom I said,

9 [M 4:6]  Oh Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation of it.

9 TBA 9 Oh Baltasar, chief of the enchanters, of whom I know that the Holy Spirit of God is in you, and no mystery is too hard for you, hear the vision of my dream which I had, and tell me the interpretation of it.

10 [M 4:7]  Thus were the visions of my head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height of it was great.

10 I was sleeping, and lo, a tall tree was growing on the earth. Its appearance was huge, and there was no other like it. 10 I had a vision on my bed; and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.

11 [M 4:8]  The tree grew, and was strong, and the height of it reached to heaven, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth.

11 And its appearance was great. Its crown came close to heaven, and its span to the clouds, filling the area under heaven. The sun and the moon dwelled in it and illuminated the whole earth. 11 The tree grew large and strong, and its height reached to the sky, and its extent to the extremity of the whole earth.

12 [M 4:9]  The leaves of it were fair, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs of it, and all flesh was fed of it.

12 Its branches were about thirty stadia long, and all the animals of the earth found shade under it, and the birds of the air hatched their brood in it. Its fruit was abundant and good, and it sustained all living creatures. 12 its leaves were fair, and its fruit abundant, and in it was meat for all; and under it the wild beasts of the field took shelter, and the birds of the sky lodged in the branches of it, and all flesh was fed of it.

13 [M 4:10]  I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven;

13 I continued looking in my sleep; lo, an angel was sent in power out of heaven. 13 I beheld in the night vision on my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven and cried aloud, and thus he said,

14 [M 4:11]  He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches.

14 And he called and said, ‘Cut it down, and destroy it, for it has been decreed by the Most High to uproot and render it useless.’ 14 Cut down the tree, and pluck off its branches, and shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the wild beasts be removed from under it, and the birds from its branches.

15 [M 4:12]  Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

15 And thus he said, ‘Spare one of its roots in the ground so that hec may feed on grass like an ox with the animals of the earth in the mountains, 15 Only leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and bind it with an iron and copper-alloy band; and it shall lie in the grass that is without and in the dew of heaven, and its portion shall be with the wild beasts in the grass of the field.

16 [M 4:13]  Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given to him; and let seven times pass over him.

16 and his body may be changed from the dew of heaven, and hec may graze with them for seven years 16 His heart shall be changed from that of man, and the heart of a wild beast shall be given to him; and seven times shall pass over him.

17 [M 4:14]  This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the basest of men.

17 until he acknowledges that the Lord of heaven has authority over everything which is in heaven and which is on the earth and does with them whatever he wishes.’ 17 The matter is by the decree of the watcher, and the demand is a word of the holy ones; that the living may known that the Lord is most high over the kingdom of men, and he will give it to whomever he shall please, and will set up over it what is set at nothing of men.

N/A

17a N/A
17a It was cut down before me in one day, and its destruction was in one hour of the day. And its branches were given to every wind, and it was dragged and thrown away. He ate grass with the animals of the earth. And hea was delivered into prison and was bound by them with shackles and bronze manacles. I marveled exceedingly at all these things, and my sleep escaped from my eyes. 17a N/A

18 [M 4:15]  This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now you, Oh Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation of it, since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

18 And when I arose in the morning from my bed, I called Daniēl, the ruler of the savants and the leader of those who decide dreams, and I described the dream for him, and he showed me its entire interpretation. 18 This is the vision which I king Nabouchodonosor saw; and do you, Baltasar, declare the interpretation, for none of the wise men of my kingdom are able to show me the interpretation of it; but you, Daniēl, are able; for the Holy Spirit of God is in you.

19 [M 4:16]  Then Daniēl, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke, and said, Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream, or the interpretation of it, trouble you. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to those who hate you, and the interpretation of it to your enemies.

19 But since Daniēl was greatly amazed and since foreboding pressed him and since he was afraid, as trembling seized him and his appearance changed, having shaken his head, having marveled for one hour, he answered me in a quiet voice: ‘O king, may this dream be for those who hate you, and its interpretation come on your enemies! 19 Then Daniēl, whose name is Baltasar, was amazed about one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. And Baltasar answered and said, My lord, let the dream be to those who hate you, and the interpretation of it to your enemies.

20 [M 4:17]  The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven, and the sight of it to all the earth;

20 The tree that was planted in the earth, whose appearance was great—it is you, O king, 20 The tree which you saw, that grew large and strong, whose height reached to the sky and its extent to all the earth;

21 [M 4:18]  Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and on whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation.

21 and all the birds of the air which nest in it. The strength of the earth and the nations and all the languages to the ends of the earth and all countries are slaves to you. 21 and whose leaves were flourishing, and its fruit abundant, (and it was meat for all; under it the wild beasts lodged, and the birds of the sky took shelter in its branches: )

22 [M 4:19]  It is you, Oh king, that are grown and become strong; for your greatness is grown, and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

22 Furthermore, the fact that that tree was exalted and neared heaven and that its span touched the clouds is: You, O king, have been exalted above all humans who are on the face of the whole earth. Your heart was exalted with pride and power vis-à-vis the holy one and his angels. Your works were seen, how you ravaged the house of the living God pertaining to the sins of the consecrated people. 22 is yourself, Oh king; for you are grown great and powerful, and your greatness has increased and reached to heaven, and your dominion to the ends of the earth.

23 [M 4:20]  And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots of it in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

23 And the vision, which you saw, that an angel was sent in power by the Lord and that he said to destroy and cut down the tree: the verdict of the great God will come on you, 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and he said, Strip the tree, and destroy it; only leave the stump of its roots in the ground, and bind it with a band of iron and copper-alloy; and it shall lie in the grass that is without, and in the dew of heaven, and its portion shall be with wild beasts, until seven times have passed over it;

24 [M 4:21]  This is the interpretation, Oh king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come on my lord the king.

24 and the Most High and his angels are pursuing you. 24 this is the interpretation of it, Oh king, and it is a decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king.

25 [M 4:22]  That they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

25 They will take you away to prison and send you away into a desert place. 25 And they shall drive you forth from men, and your dwelling shall be with wild beasts, and they shall feed you with grass as an ox, and you shall have your lodging under the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, until you known that the Most High is Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whom he shall please.

26 [M 4:23]  And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you shall have known that the heavens do rule.

26 And the root of the tree, which was spared, since it was not uprooted: the place of your throne will be kept for you for a season and an hour. Lo, they are being prepared against you, and they will whip you, and they will bring the judgments against you. 26 And whereas they said, Leave the stumps of the roots of the tree; your kingdom abides sure to you from the time that you shall know the power of the heavens.

27 [M 4:24]  Therefore, Oh king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of your tranquillity.

27 The Lord lives in heaven, and his authority is over the whole earth. Entreat him concerning sins, and atone for all your iniquities with almsa so that equity might be given to you and you might be long-lived on the throne of your kingdom and not be destroyed. Gladly receive these words, for my word is accurate and your time is complete.’ ” 27 Therefore, Oh king, let my counsel please you, and atone for your sins by alms, and your iniquities by mercy on the poor: it may be God will be long-suffering to your trespasses.

28 [M 4:25]  All this came on the king Nebuchadnezzar.

28 And at the completion of the words, Nabouchodonosor, as he heard the verdict of the vision, kept the words in his heart. 28 All these things came on king Nabouchodonosor.

29 [M 4:26]  At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylōn.

29 And after twelve months the king was walking on the walls of the city in all his glory and going through its towers, 29 After a twelvemonth, as he walked in his palace in Babylōn,

30 [M 4:27]  The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylōn, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

30 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὕτη ἐστὶ Βαβυλὼν μεγάλη, ἣν ἐγὼ ᾠκοδόμησα, καὶ οἶκος βασιλείας μου ἐν ἰσχύϊ κράτους μου κληθήσεται εἰς τιμὴν τῆς δόξης μου. 30  ἀπεκρίθη βασιλεύς, καὶ εἶπεν, οὐχ αὕτη ἐστὶν Βαβυλὼν μεγάλη, ἣν ἐγὼ ᾠκοδόμησα εἰς οἶκον βασιλείας, ἐν τῷ κράτει τῆς ἰσχύος μου, εἰς τιμὴν τῆς δόξης μου;
30 and answering he said, “This is the great Babylōn, which I have built by the might of my power, and it will be called my royal house.” 30 the king answered and said, Is not this great Babylōn, which I have built for a royal residence, by the might of my power, for the honour of my glory?

31 [M 4:28]  While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, Oh king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from you.

31 And at the completion of his word, he heard a voice from heaven: “O King Nabouchodonosor, to you it is said, The kingdom of Babylōn has been taken away from you and is being given to another, a contemned person in your house. Lo, I establish him over your kingdom, and he will receive your authority and your glory and your luxury so that you may recognize that the God of heaven has authority in the kingdom of humans and he will give it to whomever he desires. Now, by sunrise, another king will rejoice in your house and will take your glory and your power and your authority. 31 While the word was yet in the king᾿s mouth, there came a voice from heaven, saying, To you, king Nabouchodonosor, they say, The kingdom has departed from you.

32 [M 4:29]  And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make you to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

32 And the angels will pursue you for seven years, and you will never be seen, nor will you ever speak with any person. They will feed you grass like an ox, and your pasture will be from the tender grass of the earth. Lo, instead of your glory they will tie you, and another will have your luxurious house and the kingdom. 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the wild beasts of the field, and they shall feed you with grass as an ox; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High is Lord of the kingdom of men, and he will give it to whomever he shall please.

33 [M 4:30]  The same hour was the thing fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

33 Now, by morning everything will be completed concerning you. O King Nabouchodonosor of Babylōn, and none of all these things will fail.” 33 In the same hour the word was fulfilled on Nabouchodonosor; and he was driven forth from men, and he ate grass as an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hairs were grown like lions’ hairs, and his nails as birds’ claws.

33a “I, Nabouchodonosor, king of Babylōn, was bound seven years. They fed me grass like an ox, and I would eat the tender grass of the earth. And after seven years I gave my soul to supplication, and I petitioned before the Lord, the God of heaven, concerning my sins, and I entreated the great God of gods concerning my ignorance. N/A

33b And my hair became like wings of an eagle, my nails like those of a lion. My flesh and my heart were changed. I would walk about naked with the animals of the field. I saw a dream and forebodings gripped me, and after a while a great sleep overtook me, and drowsiness fell on me. N/A

34 [M 4:31]  And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him who lives forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation.

34 And at the completion of seven years my time of redemption came, and my sins and my ignorances were fulfilled before the God of heaven, and I entreated the great God of gods concerning my ignorances, and lo, one angel called me from heaven: ‘Nabouchodonosor, be subject to the holy God of heaven, and give glory to the Most High. The dominion of your nation is being given back to you.’ 34 And at the end of the time I Nabouchodonosor lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised him who lives forever, and gave him glory; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom lasts to all generations.

35 [M 4:32]  And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What do you?

35 N/A 35  καὶ πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν ὡς οὐδὲν ἐλογίσθησαν· καὶ κατὰ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖ ἐν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῇ κατοικίᾳ τῆς γῆς· καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὃς ἀντιποιήσεται τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ, τί ἐποίησας;
35 N/A 35 and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and there is none who shall withstand his power, and say to him, What has you done?

36 [M 4:33]  At the same time my reason returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honour and brightness returned to me; and my counsellers and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me.

36 “On that day my kingdom was restored to me, and my glory was given back to me. 36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and I came to the honour of my kingdom; and my natural form returned to me, and my princes, and my nobles, sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and more abundant majesty was added to me.

37 [M 4:34]  Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.

37 I acknowledge the Most High, and I praise the one who created the heaven and the earth and the seas and the rivers and everything that is in them. I acknowledge, and I praise, because he is God of gods and Lord of lords and Lord of kings, because he does signs and wonders and changes seasons and times, removing the reign of kings and setting others in their place. 37 Now therefore I Nabouchodonosor praise and greatly exalt and glorify the King of heaven; for all his works are true, and his paths are judgment; and all that walk in pride he is able to abase.

37a From now on I will serve him, and trembling has gripped me from fear of him, and I praise all his holy ones, for the gods of the nations do not have power in them to give away the kingdom of a king to another king and to kill and to make alive and to do signs and great and terrible marvels and to change very great matters as the God of heaven has done with me. And he changed great things about me. I will offer sacrifices to the Most High as an odour of fragrance to the Lord for my life every day of my reign, and I will do what is pleasing before him, I and my people, [my nation] and my lands that are in my authority. And as many as have spoken against the God of heaven and as many as should be caught speaking anything, I will condemn these to death.” 37a N/A

37b Then King Nabouchodonosor wrote a circular letter to all the nations in each place and to countries and languages who live in all the countries, generations and generations. “Praise the Lord, God of heaven. Bring sacrifice and offering to him gloriously. I, the king of kings, acknowledge him gloriously, because he has done thus with me.
