Daniel

1 [M 6:2]  It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;

1 καὶ Δαρεῖος πλήρης τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ ἔνδοξος ἐν γήρει· καὶ κατέστησε σατράπας ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτὰ ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ	1 καὶ ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον Δαρείου, καὶ κατέστησεν ἐπὶ τῆς βασιλείας σατράπας ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι, τοῦ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ,
1 And when Darius was full of days and esteemed in old age, he set 127 satraps over his whole kingdom	1 And it pleased Darius, and he set over the kingdom 120 satraps, to be in all his kingdom;

2 [M 6:3]  And over these three presidents; of whom Daniēl was first: that the princes might give accounts to them, and the king should have no damage.

2 καὶ ἐπ᾿ αὐτῶν ἄνδρας τρεῖς ἡγουμένους αὐτῶν, καὶ Δανιὴλ εἷς ἦν τῶν τριῶν ἀνδρῶν	2 καὶ ἐπάνω αὐτῶν τακτικοὺς τρεῖς, ὧν ἦν Δανιὴλ εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν, τοῦ ἀποδιδόναι αὐτοῖς τοὺς σατράπας λόγον, ὅπως ὁ βασιλεὺς μὴ ἐνοχλῆται.
2 and over them three men their leaders, and Daniēl was one of the three men,	2 and over them three governors, of whom one was, Daniēl; for the satraps to give account to them, that the king should not be troubled.

3 [M 6:4]  Then this Daniēl was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

3 ὑπὲρ πάντας ἔχων ἐξουσίαν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ. καὶ Δανιὴλ ἦν ἐνδεδυμένος πορφύραν καὶ μέγας καὶ ἔνδοξος ἔναντι Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως, καθότι ἦν ἔνδοξος καὶ ἐπιστήμων καὶ συνετός, καὶ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ εὐοδούμενος ἐν ταῖς πραγματείαις τοῦ βασιλέως, αἷς ἔπρασσε. τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐβουλεύσατο καταστῆσαι τὸν Δανιὴλ ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς δύο ἄνδρας, οὓς κατέστησε μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, καὶ σατράπας ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτά.

3 καὶ ἦν Δανιὴλ ὑπὲρ αὐτούς, ὅτι πνεῦμα περισσὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐφ᾿ ὅλης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ.

3 since he had authority over everyone in the kingdom. And Daniēl was clothed in purple and was great and esteemed before King Darius, as he was knowledgeable and intelligent and a holy spirit was in him, and he prospered in the affairs of the king that he performed. [Then the king decided to set Daniēl over all his kingdom, and the two men whom he had appointed with him and the 127 satraps.]

3 And Daniēl was over them, for there was an excellent spirit in him; and the king set him over all his kingdom.

4 [M 6:5]  Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniēl concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; since he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

4 ὅτε δὲ ἐβουλεύσατο ὁ βασιλεὺς καταστῆσαι τὸν Δανιὴλ ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ, τότε βουλὴν καὶ γνώμην ἐβουλεύσαντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς οἱ δύο νεανίσκοι πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες, ἐπεὶ οὐδεμίαν ἁμαρτίαν οὐδὲ ἄγνοιαν ηὕρισκον κατὰ τοῦ Δανιὴλ περὶ ἧς κατηγορήσουσιν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα,	4 καὶ οἱ τακτικοὶ καὶ οἱ σατράπαι ἐζήτουν πρόφασιν εὑρεῖν κατὰ Δανιήλ· καὶ πᾶσαν πρόφασιν καὶ παράπτωμα καὶ ἀμβλάκημα οὐχ εὗρον κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι πιστὸς ἦν.
4 Now, when the king decided to appoint Daniēl over all his kingdom, then the two young men, speaking to each other, agreed to a plan and resolve among themselves, since they found neither sin nor ignorance against Daniēl for which they could accuse him to the king.	4 Then the governors and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniēl; but they found against him no occasion, nor trespass, nor error, because he was faithful.

5 [M 6:6]  Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniēl, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

5 καὶ εἶπαν δεῦτε στήσωμεν ὁρισμὸν καθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν ὅτι πᾶς ἄνθρωπος οὐκ ἀξιώσει ἀξίωμα καὶ οὐ μὴ εὔξηται εὐχὴν ἀπὸ παντὸς θεοῦ ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα, ἀλλ᾿ ἢ παρὰ Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως· εἰ δὲ μή, ἀποθανεῖται· ἵνα ἡττήσωσι τὸν Δανιὴλ ἐναντίον τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ῥιφῇ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων. ᾔδεισαν γὰρ ὅτι Δανιὴλ προσεύχεται καὶ δεῖται κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας.	5 καὶ εἶπον οἱ τακτικοί, οὐχ εὑρήσομεν κατὰ Δανιὴλ πρόφασιν, εἰ μὴ ἐν νομίμοις θεοῦ αὐτοῦ.
5 And they said, “Come, let us establish an interdict by ourselves that no one will present a petition and never pray a prayer to any god for thirty days, except from King Darius, otherwise hea will die,” so that they might vanquish Daniēl before the king and he might be cast into the lions’ pit. For they knew that Daniēl prayed to and entreated the Lord, his God, three times a day.	5 And the governors said, We shall not find occasion against Daniēl, except in the ordinances of his God.

6 [M 6:7]  Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, King Darius, live forever.

6 τότε προσήλθοσαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἐκεῖνοι καὶ εἶπαν ἐναντίον τοῦ βασιλέως	6 τότε οἱ τακτικοὶ καὶ οἱ σατράπαι παρέστησαν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Δαρεῖε βασιλεῦ, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ζῆθι.
6 Then those men went and said before the king,	6 Then the governors and satraps stood by the king, and said to him, King Darius, live forever.

7 [M 6:8]  All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellers, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for 30 days, save of you, Oh king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

7 ὁρισμὸν καὶ στάσιν ἐστήσαμεν ὅτι πᾶς ἄνθρωπος, ὃς ἄν εὔξηται εὐχὴν ἢ ἀξιώσῃ ἀξίωμά τι παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα ἀλλ᾿ ἢ παρὰ Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως, ῥιφήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.	7 συνεβουλεύσαντο πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς βασιλείας σου στρατηγοὶ καὶ σατράπαι, ὕπατοι καὶ τοπάρχαι, τοῦ στῆσαι στάσει βασιλικῇ, καὶ ἐνισχῦσαι ὁρισμόν, ὅπως ὃς ἄν αἰτήσῃ αἴτημα παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπου, ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα, ἀλλ᾿ ἢ παρὰ σοῦ βασιλεῦ ἐμβληθήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.
7 “We have established an interdict and stipulation that any person who prays a prayer or requests some request from any god, for thirty days, except from King Darius, will be cast into the lions’ pit.”	7 All who preside over your kingdom, captains and satraps, chiefs and local governors, have taken counsel together, to establish by a royal statue and to confirm a decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of you, Oh king, shall be cast into the den of lions.

8 [M 6:9]  Now, Oh king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it isn’t changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter.

8 καὶ ἠξίωσαν τὸν βασιλέα ἵνα στήσῃ τὸν ὁρισμὸν καὶ μὴ ἀλλοιώσῃ αὐτόν, διότι ᾔδεισαν ὅτι Δανιὴλ προσεύχεται καὶ δεῖται τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας, ἵνα ἡττηθῇ διὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ῥιφῇ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.	8 νῦν οὖν βασιλεῦ στῆσον τὸν ὁρισμόν, καὶ ἔκθες γραφήν, ὅπως μὴ ἀλλοιωθῇ τὸ δόγμα Μήδων καὶ Περσῶν.
8 And they requested the king so that he would establish and not change the interdict (as they knew Daniēl prayed and entreated three times a day) so that he might be vanquished at the hands of the king and thrown into the lions’ pit.	8 Now then, Oh king, establish the decree, and publish a writ, that the decree of the Persians and Medes isn’t changed.

9 [M 6:10]  Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

9 καὶ οὕτως ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος ἔστησε καὶ ἐκύρωσεν.	9 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος ἐπέταξεν γραφῆναι τὸ δόγμα.
9 And thus King Darius established and confirmed it.	9 Then king Darius commanded the decree to be written.

10 [M 6:11]  Now when Daniēl knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

10 ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ Δανιὴλ τὸν ὁρισμόν, ὃν ἔστησε κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ, θυρίδας ἤνοιξεν ἐν τῷ ὑπερῴῳ αὐτοῦ κατέναντι Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ ἔπιπτεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας, καθὼς ἐποίει ἔμπροσθεν, καὶ ἐδεῖτο.	10 καὶ Δανιὴλ ἡνίκα ἔγνω ὅτι ἐνετάγη τὸ δόγμα, εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ· καὶ αἱ θυρίδες ἀνεῳγμέναι αὐτῷ ἐν τοῖς ὑπερῴοις αὐτοῦ κατέναντι Ἱερουσαλήμ, καὶ καιροὺς τρεῖς τῆς ἡμέρας ἦν κάμπτων ἐπὶ τὰ γόνατα αὐτοῦ, καὶ προσευχόμενος καὶ ἐξομολογούμενος ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ, καθὼς ἦν ποιῶν ἔμπροσθεν.
10 But although Daniēl was aware of the interdict, which they established against him, he opened windows in his upper room opposite Jerousalem and would fall on his face thrice a day, just as he had been doing previously and kept entreating.	10 And when Daniēl knew that the decree was ordered, he went into his house; and his windows were opened in his chambers toward Jerusalem, and three times in the day he knelt on his knees, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he used to do before.

11 [M 6:12]  Then these men assembled, and found Daniēl praying and making supplication before his God.

11 καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐτήρησαν τὸν Δανιὴλ καὶ κατελάβοσαν αὐτὸν εὐχόμενον τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν.	11 τότε οἱ ἄνδρες ἐκεῖνοι παρετήρησαν, καὶ εὗρον τὸν Δανιὴλ ἀξιοῦντα καὶ δεόμενον τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ.
11 And they watched Daniēl and caught him praying three times a day each day.	11 Then these men watched, and found Daniēl praying and supplicating to his God.

12 [M 6:13]  Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree; Have you not signed a decree, that every man who shall ask a petition of any God or man within 30 days, save of you, Oh king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which alters not.

12 τότε οὗτοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἐνέτυχον τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ εἶπαν Δαρεῖε βασιλεῦ, οὐχ ὁρισμὸν ὡρίσω ἵνα πᾶς ἄνθρωπος μὴ εὔξηται εὐχὴν μηδὲ ἀξιώσῃ ἀξίωμα παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα ἀλλὰ παρὰ σοῦ, βασιλεῦ· εἰ δὲ μή, ῥιφήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων; ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἀκριβὴς ὁ λόγος, καὶ μενεῖ ὁ ὁρισμός.	12 καὶ προσελθόντες λέγουσιν τῷ βασιλεῖ, βασιλεῦ, οὐχ ὁρισμὸν ἔταξας, ὅπως πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἄν αἰτήσῃ παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπου αἴτημα, ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα, ἀλλ᾿ ἢ παρὰ σοῦ βασιλεῦ, ἐμβληθήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων; καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς, ἀληθινὸς ὁ λόγος, καὶ τὸ δόγμα Μήδων καὶ Περσῶν οὐ παρελεύσεται.
12 Then these men met with the king and said, “O King Darius, did you not make an interdict that no person will pray a prayer nor request a request from any god for thirty days, except from you, O king, otherwise the person will be cast into the lions’ pit?” Then, the king answered and said to them, “The word is accurate, and the interdict will remain.”	12 And they came and said to the king, Oh king, has you not made a decree, that whatever man shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, but of you, Oh king, shall be cast into the den of lions? And the king said, The word is true, and the decree of the Medes and Persians shall not pass.

13 [M 6:14]  Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniēl, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, doesn’t regard you, Oh king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.

13 καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ ὁρκίζομέν σὲ τοῖς Μήδων καὶ Περσῶν δόγμασιν, ἵνα μὴ ἀλλοιώσῃς τὸ πρόσταγμα μηδὲ θαυμάσῃς πρόσωπον καὶ ἵνα μὴ ἐλαττώσῃς τι τῶν εἰρημένων καὶ κολάσῃς τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ὃς οὐκ ἐνέμεινε τῷ ὁρισμῷ τούτῳ. καὶ εἶπεν οὕτως ποιήσω καθὼς λέγετε, καὶ ἕστηκέ μοι τοῦτο.	13 τότε ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ λέγουσιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως, Δανιήλ, ὁ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας τῆς Ἰουδαίας, οὐχ ὑπετάγη τῷ δόγματί σου· περὶ τοῦ ὁρισμοῦ οὗ ἔταξας καὶ καιροὺς τρεῖς τῆς ἡμέρας αἰτεῖ παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ τὰ αἰτήματα αὐτοῦ.
13 And they said to him, “We adjure you; swear by the decrees of the Medes and Persians that you not change the matter nor that you respect the person nor that you reduce anything of the things said and you punish the person who did not abide by the this interdict.” And he said, “Thus I will do as you say, and this has been established for me.”	13 Then they answered and said before the king, Daniēl of the children of the captivity of Judea, hasn’t submitted to your decree; and three times in the day he makes his requests of his God.

13a καὶ εἶπαν ἰδοὺ εὕρομεν Δανιὴλ τὸν φίλον σου εὐχόμενον καὶ δεόμενον τοῦ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ αὐτοῦ τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας.	N/A
13a And they said, “Lo, we have found Daniēl, your friend, praying and entreating the face of his God thrice a day.	N/A

14 [M 6:15]  Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniēl to deliver him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

14 καὶ λυπούμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν ῥιφῆναι τὸν Δανιὴλ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων κατὰ τὸν ὁρισμόν, ὃν ἔστησε κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ. τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς σφόδρα ἐλυπήθη ἐπὶ τῷ Δανιὴλ καὶ ἐβοήθει τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι αὐτὸν ἕως δυσμῶν ἡλίου ἀπὸ τῶν χειρῶν τῶν σατραπῶν	14 τότε ὁ βασιλεύς, ὡς τὸ ῥῆμα ἤκουσεν, πολὺ ἐλυπήθη ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ, καὶ περὶ τοῦ Δανιὴλ ἠγωνίσατο τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι αὐτόν, καὶ ἕως ἑσπέρας ἦν ἀγωνιζόμενος τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι αὐτόν.
14 And grieving, the king said that Daniēl be cast into the lions’ pit according to the interdict, [which he established against him]. Then the king grieved exceedingly for Daniēl, and he kept assisting to deliver him until sunset from the hands of the satraps.	14 Then the king, when he heard the saying, was much grieved for Daniēl and he greatly exerted himself for Daniēl to deliver him; and he exerted himself till evening to deliver him.

15 [M 6:16]  Then these men assembled to the king, and said to the king, Know, Oh king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed.

15 καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἐξελέσθαι αὐτὸν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν.	15 τότε οἱ ἄνδρες ἐκεῖνοι λέγουσιν τῷ βασιλεῖ, γνῶθι βασιλεῦ, ὅτι δόγμα Μήδοις καὶ Πέρσαις, τοῦ πᾶν ὁρισμὸν καὶ στάσιν ἣν ἄν ὁ βασιλεὺς στήσῃ, οὐ δεῖ παραλλάξαι.
15 And he was unable to deliver him from them.	15 Then those men said to the king, Know, Oh king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is that we must not change any decree of statue which the king shall make.

16 [M 6:17]  Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniēl, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spoke and said to Daniēl, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.

16 ἀναβοήσας δὲ Δαρεῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπε τῷ Δανιὴλ ὁ θεός σου, ᾧ σὺ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς τρὶς τῆς ἡμέρας, αὐτὸς ἐξελεῖταί σὲ ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν λεόντων· ἕως πρωῒ θάρρει.	16 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν· καὶ ἤγαγον τὸν Δανιήλ, καὶ ἐνέβαλον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Δανιήλ, ὁ θεός σου, ᾧ σὺ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς, αὐτὸς ἐξελεῖταί σε.
16 Now Darius the king cried out and said to Daniēl, “Your God, whom you continually serve thrice a day, he will deliver you from the power of lions! Have courage until morning.”	16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniēl, and cast him into the den of lions. But the king said to Daniēl, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.

17 [M 6:18]  And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniēl.

17 τότε Δανιὴλ ἐρρίφη εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων, καὶ ἠνέχθη λίθος καὶ ἐτέθη εἰς τὸ στόμα τοῦ λάκκου, καὶ ἐσφραγίσατο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς δακτθλίοις τῶν μεγιστάνων αὐτοῦ, ὅπως μὴ ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν ἀρθῇ ὁ Δανιὴλ ἢ ὁ βασιλεὺς αὐτὸν ἀνασπάσῃ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου.	17 καὶ ἤνεγκαν λίθον, καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα τοῦ λάκκου, καὶ ἐσφραγίσατο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ τῶν μεγιστάνων αὐτοῦ, ὅπως μὴ ἀλλοιωθῇ πρᾶγμα ἐν τῷ Δανιήλ.
17 Then Daniēl was thrown into the lions’ pit, and a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the pit, and the king sealed it with his signet and with the signets of his nobles so that Daniēl might not be removed by them or the king pull him up from the pit.	17 And they brought a stone, and put it on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his ring, and with the ring of his nobles; that the case might not be altered with regard to Daniēl.

18 [M 6:19]  Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him; and his sleep went from him.

18 τότε ὑπέστρεψεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὰ βασίλεια αὐτοῦ καὶ ηὐλίσθη νῆστις καὶ ἦν λυπούμενος περὶ τοῦ Δανιήλ. τότε ὁ θεὸς τοῦ Δανιὴλ πρόνοιαν ποιούμενος αὐτοῦ ἀπέκλεισε τὰ στόματα τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐ παρηνώχλησαν τῷ Δανιήλ.	18 καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἄδειπνος, καὶ ἐδέσματα οὐκ εἰσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ· καὶ ὁ ὕπνος ἀπέστη ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἀπέκλεισεν ὁ θεὸς τὰ στόματα τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐ παρηνώχλησαν τῷ Δανιήλ.
18 Then the king returned to his palace and passed the night without eating and was grieving for Daniēl. But the God of Daniēl, having taken forethought for him, shut the mouths of the lions, and they did not bother Daniēl.	18 And the king departed to his house, and lay down fasting, and they brought him no food; and his sleep departed from him. But God shut the mouths of the lions, and they not molest Daniēl.

19 [M 6:20]  Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste to the den of lions.

19 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος ὤρθρισε πρωῒ καὶ παρέλαβε μεθ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ τοὺς σατράπας καὶ πορευθεὶς ἔστη ἐπὶ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ λάκκου τῶν λεόντων.	19 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀνέστη τὸ πρωῒ ἐν τῷ φωτί, καὶ ἐν σπουδῇ ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.
19 And King Darius rose early in the morning and took the satraps with him. And he went and stood at the opening of the lions’ pit.	19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and came in have to the den of lions.

20 [M 6:21]  And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice to Daniēl; and the king spoke and said to Daniēl, Oh Daniēl, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?

20 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐκάλεσε τὸν Δανιὴλ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ λέγων ὦ Δανιήλ, εἰ ἄρα ζῇς, καὶ ὁ θεός σου, ᾧ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς, σέσωκέ σὲ ἀπὸ τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐκ ἠχρείωκάν σε;	20 καὶ ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν αὐτὸν τῷ λάκκῳ, ἐβόησεν φωνῇ ἰσχυρᾷ, Δανιήλ, ὁ δοῦλος τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος, ὁ θεός σου ᾧ σὺ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς, εἰ ἠδυνήθη ἐξελέσθαι σὲ ἐκ στόματος τῶν λεόντων;
20 Then the king called Daniēl in a loud voice with wailing, saying, “O Daniēl, are you still alive, and has your God whom you continually serve saved you from the lions, and have they not injured you?”	20 And when he drew near to the den, he cried with a loud voice, Daniēl, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lion᾿s mouth?

21 [M 6:22]  Then said Daniēl to the king, Oh king, live forever.

21 τότε Δανιὴλ ἐπήκουσε φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεῦ, ἔτι εἰμὶ ζῶν,	21 καὶ εἶπεν Δανιὴλ τῷ βασιλεῖ, βασιλεῦ, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ζῆθι.
21 Then Daniēl heeded the loud voice and said,	21 And Daniēl said to the king, Oh king, live forever.

22 [M 6:23]  My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, that they haven’t hurt me: since before him innocency was found in me; and also before you, Oh king, have I done no hurt.

22 καὶ σέσωκέ με ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ τῶν λεόντων, καθότι δικαιοσύνη ἐν ἐμοὶ εὑρέθη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐναντίον δὲ σοῦ, βασιλεῦ, οὔτε ἄγνοια οὔτε ἁμαρτία εὑρέθη ἐν ἐμοί· σὺ δὲ ἤκουσας ἀνθρώπων πλανώντων βασιλεῖς καὶ ἔρριψάς με εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων εἰς ἀπώλειαν.	22 ὁ θεός μου ἀπέστειλεν τὸν ἄγγελον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνέφραξεν τὰ στόματα τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐκ ἐλυμήναντό με, ὅτι κατέναντι αὐτοῦ εὐθύτης ηὑρέθη μοι, καὶ ἐνώπιον δὲ σοῦ βασιλεῦ παράπτωμα οὐκ ἐποίησα.
22 “O king, I am still alive, and the Lord has saved me from the lions, because righteousness was found in me in his presence, and also in your presence, O king, neither ignorance nor sin was found in me. But you listened to people who deceive kings, and you cast me into the lions’ pit for destruction.”	22 My God has sent his angel, and stopped the lions’ mouths, and they haven’t hurt me; for uprightness was found in me before him; and moreover before you, Oh king, I have committed no trespass.

23 [M 6:24]  Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniēl up out of the den. So Daniēl was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found on him, because he believed in his God.

23 τότε συνήχθησαν πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις καὶ εἶδον τὸν Δανιήλ, ὡς οὐ παρηνώχλησαν αὐτῷ οἱ λέοντες.	23 τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς πολὺ ἠγαθύνθη ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ, καὶ τὸν Δανιὴλ εἶπεν ἀνενέγκαι ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου· καὶ ἀνηνέχθη Δανιὴλ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου· καὶ πᾶσα διαφθορὰ οὐχ εὑρέθη ἐν αὐτῷ, ὅτι ἐπίστευσεν ἐν τῷ θεῷ αὐτοῦ.
23 Then all the authorities gathered and saw Daniēl, how the lions had not bothered him.	23 Then the king was very glad for him, and he commanded to bring Daniēl out of the den. So Daniēl was brought out of the den, and there was found no hurt on him, because he believed in his God.

24 [M 6:25]  And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniēl, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.

24 τότε οἱ δύο ἄνθρωποι ἐκεῖνοι οἱ καταμαρτυρήσαντες τοῦ Δανιήλ, αὐτοὶ καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν, ἐρρίφησαν τοῖς λέουσι, καὶ οἱ λέοντες ἀπέκτειναν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἔθλασαν τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν.	24 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ ἠγάγοσαν τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς διαβαλόντας τὸν Δανιήλ, καὶ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων ἐνεβλήθησαν αὐτοί, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν· καὶ οὐκ ἔφθασαν εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος τοῦ λάκκου, ἕως οὗ ἐκυρίευσαν αὐτῶν οἱ λέοντες, καὶ πάντα τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν ἐλέπτυναν.
24 Then these two men who testified falsely against Daniēl—they and their wives and their children were cast to the lions. And the lions killed them and shattered their bones, and Daniēl was appointed over the whole kingdom of Darius.	24 And the king commanded, and they brought the men who had accused Daniēl, and they were cast into the den of lions, they, and their children, and their wives; and they didn’t reach the bottom of the den before the lions had the mastery of them, and utterly broke to pieces all their bones.

25 [M 6:26]  Then king Darius wrote to all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied to you.

25 τότε Δαρεῖος ἔγραψε πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι καὶ χώραις καὶ γλώσσαις, τοῖς οἰκοῦσιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ αὐτοῦ λέγων	25 τότε Δαρεῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔγραψεν πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς, φυλαῖς, γλώσσαις, τοῖς οἰκοῦσιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ· εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πληθυνθείη.
25 Then Darius wrote to all nations and countries and languages who inhabited his whole earth, saying.	25 Then king Darius wrote to all nations, tribes, and languages, who dwell in all the earth, saying, Peace be multiplied to you.

26 [M 6:27]  I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniēl; for he is the living God, and steadfast forever, and his kingdom what shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even to the end.

26 πάντες οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ὄντες ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου ἔστωσαν προσκυνοῦντες καὶ λατρεύοντες τῷ θεῷ τοῦ Δανιήλ, αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστι θεὸς μένων καὶ ζῶν εἰς γενεὰς γενεῶν ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος·	26 ἐκ προσώπου μου ἐτέθη δόγμα τοῦ ἐν πάσῃ ἀρχῇ τῆς βασιλείας μου, εἶναι τρέμοντας καὶ φοβουμένους ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ Δανιήλ, ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν θεὸς ζῶν, καὶ μένων εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ οὐ διαφθαρήσεται, καὶ ἡ κυριεία αὐτοῦ ἕως τέλους.
26 “Let all people who are in my kingdom do obeisance and worship Daniēl’s God, for he is an enduring and living God for generations and generations, forever.	26 This decree has been set forth by me in every dominion of my kingdom, that men tremble and fear before the God of Daniēl; for he is the living and eternal God, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his dominion is forever.

27 [M 6:28]  He delivers and rescues, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered Daniēl from the power of the lions.

27 ἐγὼ Δαρεῖος ἔσομαι αὐτῷ προσκυνῶν καὶ δουλεύων πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας μου, τὰ γὰρ εἴδωλα τὰ χειροποίητα οὐ δύνανται σῶσαι, ὡς ἐλυτρώσατο ὁ θεὸς τοῦ Δανιὴλ τὸν Δανιήλ.	27 ἀντιλαμβάνεται καὶ ῥύεται, καὶ ποιεῖ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅστις ἐξείλατο τὸν Δανιὴλ ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν λεόντων.
27 I, Darius, will do obeisance and be subject to him all my days, for the handmade idols are not able to save as God redeemed Daniēl.”	27 He helps and delivers, and works signs and wonders in the heaven and on the earth, who has rescued Daniēl from the power of the lions.

28 [M 6:29]  So this Daniēl prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

28 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος προσετέθη πρὸς τὸ γένος αὐτοῦ, καὶ Δανιὴλ κατεστάθη ἐπὶ τῆς βασιλείας Δαρείου· καὶ Κῦρος ὁ Πέρσης παρέλαβε τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ.	28 καὶ Δανιὴλ κατεύθυνεν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ Δαρείου, καὶ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ Κύρου τοῦ Πέρσου.
28 And King Darius was added to his fathers, and Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom. Until the evening he kept agonizing to deliver him.	28 And Daniēl prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
