Chapter 15

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 Then said Yahweh to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind couldn’t be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

1 And the Lord said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before my face, my soul couldn’t be toward them: dismiss this people, and let them go forth. 1 And the Lord said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before my face, my soul couldn’t be toward them: dismiss this people, and let them go forth.

2 And it will happen, if they say to you, Where shall we go forth? Then you shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.

2 καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν εἴπωσιν πρὸς σέ ποῦ ἐξελευσόμεθα;
2 καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν εἴπωσι πρὸς σέ· ποῦ ἐξελευσόμεθα;
2 And it shall be, if they say to you, Where shall we go forth? Then you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord; As many as are for death, to death; and as many as are for famine, to famine; and as many as are for the sword, to the sword; and as many as are for captivity, to captivity. 2 And it shall be, if they say to you, Where shall we go forth? Then you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord; As many as are for death, to death; and as many as are for famine, to famine; and as many as are for the sword, to the sword; and as many as are for captivity, to captivity.

3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, says Yahweh: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.

3 And I will punish them with four kinds of death, says the Lord, the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the wild beasts of the earth, and the birds of the sky to devour and destroy. 3 And I will punish them with four kinds of death, says the Lord, the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the wild beasts of the earth, and the birds of the sky to devour and destroy.

4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

4 And I will deliver them up for distress to all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasses son of Ezekias king of Juda, for all that he did in Jerusalem. 4 And I will deliver them up for distress to all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasses son of Ezekias king of Juda, for all that he did in Jerusalem.

5 For who shall have pity on you, Oh Jerusalem? Or who shall bemoan you? Or who shall go aside to ask how you do?

5 τίς φείσεται ἐπὶ σοί, Ἱερουσαλήμ;
καὶ τίς δειλιάσει ἐπὶ σοί.; τίς ἀνακάμψει εἰς εἰρήνην σοι;
5 τίς φείσεται ἐπὶ σοί, Ἱερουσαλήμ;
καὶ τίς δειλιάσει ἐπὶ σοί.; τίς ἀνακάμψει εἰς εἰρήνην σοι;
5 Who will spare you, Oh Jerusalem? And who will fear for you? Or who will turn back to ask for your welfare? 5 Who will spare you, Oh Jerusalem? And who will fear for you? Or who will turn back to ask for your welfare?

6 You have forsaken me, says Yahweh, you are gone backward; therefore will I stretch out my hand against you, and destroy you; I am weary with repenting.

6 You have turned away from me, says the Lord, you will go back; therefore I will stretch out my hand, and will destroy you, and will no more spare them. 6 You have turned away from me, says the Lord, you will go back; therefore I will stretch out my hand, and will destroy you, and will no more spare them.

7 And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.

7 And I will completely scatter them; in the gates of my people they are bereaved of children: they have destroyed my people because of their iniquities. 7 And I will completely scatter them; in the gates of my people they are bereaved of children: they have destroyed my people because of their iniquities.

8 Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought on them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall on it suddenly, and terrors on the city.

8 Their widows have been multiplied more than the sand of the sea: I have brought young men against the mother, even distress at noon-day: I have suddenly cast on her trembling and anxiety. 8 Their widows have been multiplied more than the sand of the sea: I have brought young men against the mother, even distress at noon-day: I have suddenly cast on her trembling and anxiety.

9 She who has given birth to seven languishes: she has given up the spirit; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she has been ashamed and confounded; and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, says Yahweh.

9 She who gave birth to seven is spent; her soul has fainted under trouble; her sun is gone down while it is yet noon; she is ashamed and disgraced: I will give the remnant of them to the sword before their enemies. 9 She who gave birth to seven is spent; her soul has fainted under trouble; her sun is gone down while it is yet noon; she is ashamed and disgraced: I will give the remnant of them to the sword before their enemies.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that you have given birth to me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet everyone of them curses me.

10 οἴμμοι ἐγώ, μῆτερ, ὡς τίνα με ἔτεκες;
10 Οἴμοι ἐγὼ μῆτερ, ὡς τίνα με ἔτεκες;
10 Woe is me, my mother! you have born me as some man of strife, and at variance with the whole earth; I haven’t helped others, nor has anyone helped me; my strength has failed among those who curse me. 10 Woe is me, my mother! you have born me as some man of strife, and at variance with the whole earth; I haven’t helped others, nor has anyone helped me; my strength has failed among those who curse me.

11 Yahweh said, Verily it shall be well with your remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat you well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

11 Be it so, Lord, in their prosperity; surely I stood before you in the time of their calamities, and in the time of their affliction, for their good against the enemy. 11 Be it so, Lord, in their prosperity; surely I stood before you in the time of their calamities, and in the time of their affliction, for their good against the enemy.

12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel?

12 εἰ γνωσθήσεται σίδηρος;
12 εἰ γνωσθήσεται σίδηρος;
12 Will iron be known? Whereas your strength is a copper-alloy covering. 12 Will iron be known? Whereas your strength is a copper-alloy covering.

13 Your substance and your treasures will I give to the spoil without price, and that for all your sins, even in all your borders.

13 Yes, I will give your treasures for a spoil as a recompense, because of all your sins and that in all your borders. 13 Yes, I will give your treasures for a spoil as a recompense, because of all your sins and that in all your borders.

14 And I will make you to pass with your enemies into a land which you didn’t know,; for a fire is kindled in my anger, which shall burn on you.

14 And I will enslave you to your enemies all around, in a land which you haven’t known; for a fire has been kindled out of my wrath; it shall burn on you. 14 And I will enslave you to your enemies all around, in a land which you haven’t known; for a fire has been kindled out of my wrath; it shall burn on you.

15 Oh Yahweh, you know: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in your longsuffering: know that for your sake I have suffered rebuke.

15 Oh Lord, remember me, and visit me, and vindicate me before those who persecute me; don’t bear long with them; know how I have met with reproach for your sake, from those who set at nothing your words; 15 Oh Lord, remember me, and visit me, and vindicate me before those who persecute me; don’t bear long with them; know how I have met with reproach for your sake, from those who set at nothing your words;

16 Your words were found, and I ate them; and your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by your name, Oh Yahweh Elohim of armies.

16 consume them; and your word shall be to me for the joy and gladness of my heart; for your name has been called on me, Oh Lord Almighty. 16 consume them; and your word shall be to me for the joy and gladness of my heart; for your name has been called on me, Oh Lord Almighty.

17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of your hand; for you have filled me with indignation.

17 I haven’t sat in the assembly of them as they mocked, but I feared because of your power: I sat alone, for I was filled with bitterness. 17 I haven’t sat in the assembly of them as they mocked, but I feared because of your power: I sat alone, for I was filled with bitterness.

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you be altogether to me as a liar, and as waters that fail?

18 ἵνα τί οἱ λυποῦντές με κατισχύουσίν μου;
πληγή μου στερεά, πόθεν ἰαθήσομαι;
18 ἵνα τί οἱ λυποῦντές με κατισχύουσί μου;
πληγή μου στερεά, πόθεν ἰαθήσομαι;
18 Why do they who grieve me prevail against me? My wound is severe; from which shall I be healed? It is indeed become to me as deceitful water, that has no faithfullness. 18 Why do they who grieve me prevail against me? My wound is severe; from which shall I be healed? It is indeed become to me as deceitful water, that has no faithfullness.

19 Therefore thus says Yahweh, If you return, then will I bring you again, and you shall stand before me; and if you take forth the precious from the vile, you shall be as my mouth: let them return to you; but return not you to them.

19 Therefore thus says the Lord, If you will return, then will I restore you, and you shall stand before my face; and if you will bring forth the precious from the worthless, you shall be as my mouth; and they shall return to you; but you shall not return to them. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord, If you will return, then will I restore you, and you shall stand before my face; and if you will bring forth the precious from the worthless, you shall be as my mouth; and they shall return to you; but you shall not return to them.

20 And I will make you to this people a fenced bronze wall; and they shall fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you; for I am with you to save you and to deliver you, says Yahweh.

20 And I will make you to this people as a strong copper-alloy wall; and they shall fight against you, but they shall by no means prevail against you; 20 And I will make you to this people as a strong copper-alloy wall; and they shall fight against you, but they shall by no means prevail against you;

21 And I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible.

21 for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you out of the hand of wicked men; and I will ransom you out of the hand of pestilent men. 21 for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you out of the hand of wicked men; and I will ransom you out of the hand of pestilent men.
