| 1 καὶ λυπηθεὶς ἔκλαυσα καὶ προσευξάμην μετ᾿ ὀδύνης λέγων | 1 καὶ περίλυπος γενόμενος τῇ ψυχῇ καὶ στενάξας ἔκλαυσα καὶ ἠρξάμην προσεύχεσθαι μετὰ στεναγμῶν |
| 1 Then being grieved I wept, and in my sorrow prayed, saying, | Then being grief-stricken in spirit and groaning, I wept, and I began to pray with sighs: |
| 2 δίκαιος εἶ, κύριε, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοί σου ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ ἀλήθεια, καὶ κρίσιν ἀληθινὴν καὶ δικαίαν σὺ κρίνεις εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. | 2 δίκαιος εἶ κύριε καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου δίκαια καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοί σου ἐλεημοσύνη καὶ ἀλήθεια σὺ κρίνεις τὸν αἰῶνα |
| 2 “Oh Lord, You are just, and all your works and all your ways are mercy and truth, and you judge truly and justly for ever. | “You are righteous, O Lord, and all your deeds are righteous, and all your ways are mercy and truth; you judge the age. |
| 3 μνήσθητί μου καὶ ἐπίβλεψον ἐπ᾿ ἐμέ· μή με ἐκδικήσῃς ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις μου καὶ τοῖς ἀγνοήμασίν μου καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου, ἃ ἥμαρτον ἐνώπιόν σου· | 3 καὶ νῦν σύ κύριε μνήσθητί μου καὶ ἐπίβλεψον καὶ μή με ἐκδικήσῃς ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις μου καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀγνοήμασίν μου καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου οἷς ἥμαρτον ἐναντίον σου |
| 3 Remember me, and look on me, punish me not for my sins and ignorances, and the sins of my fathers, who have sinned before you: | And now you, O Lord, remember me, and look down. And do not punish me for my sins and for my unwitting offenses and those of my ancestors; they sinned before you, |
| 4 παρήκουσαν γὰρ τῶν ἐντολῶν σου. ἔδωκας ἡμᾶς εἰς διαρπαγὴν καὶ αἰχμαλωσίαν καὶ θάνατον καὶ παραβολὴν ὀνειδισμοῦ πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἐν οἷς ἐσκορπίσμεθα. | 4 καὶ παρήκουσα τῶν ἐντολῶν σου καὶ ἔδωκας ἡμᾶς εἰς ἁρπαγὴν καὶ αἰχμαλωσίαν καὶ θάνατον καὶ εἰς παραβολὴν καὶ λάλημα καὶ ὀνειδισμὸν ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐν οἷς ἡμᾶς διεσκόρπισας |
| 4 For they obeyed not your commandments: therefore you have delivered us for a spoil, and unto captivity, and unto death, and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed. | and they disobeyed your commandments. And you gave us over to plunder and exile and death and for an illustration and byword and reproach among all the nations among which you have scattered us. |
| 5 καὶ νῦν πολλαὶ αἱ κρίσεις σου εἰσιν ἀληθιναὶ ἐξ ἐμοῦ ποιῆσαι περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου, ὅτι οὐκ ἐποιήσαμεν τὰς ἐντολάς σου· οὐ γὰρ ἐπορεύθημεν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ἐνώπιόν σου. | 5 καὶ νῦν πολλαί σου αἱ κρίσεις ὑπάρχουσιν ἀληθιναὶ ποιῆσαι ἐξ ἐμοῦ περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου ὅτι οὐκ ἐποιήσαμεν τὰς ἐντολάς σου καὶ οὐκ ἐπορεύθημεν ἀληθινῶς ἐνώπιόν σου |
| 5 And now your judgments are many and true: deal with me according to my sins and my fathers’: because we have not kept your commandments, neither have walked in truth before you. | And now your many judgments are true in doing with me according to my sins, because we did not keep your commandments and did not walk truthfully before you. |
| 6 καὶ νῦν κατὰ τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιόν σου ποίησον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ· ἐπίταξον ἀναλαβεῖν τὸ πνεῦμά μου, ὅπως ἀπολυθῶ καὶ γένωμαι γῆ· διότι λυσιτελεῖ μοι ἀποθανεῖν ἢ ζῆν, ὅτι ὀνειδισμοὺς ψευδεῖς ἤκουσα, καὶ λύπη ἐστὶν πολλὴ ἐν ἐμοί· ἐπίταξον ἀπολυθῆναί με τῆς ἀνάγκης ἤδη εἰς τὸν αἰώνιον τόπον, μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ. | 6 καὶ νῦν κατὰ τὸ ἀρεστόν σου ποίησον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐπίταξον ἀναλαβεῖν τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὅπως ἀπολυθῶ ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς καὶ γένωμαι γῆ διὸ λυσιτελεῖ μοι ἀποθανεῖν μᾶλλον ἢ ζῆν ὅτι ὀνειδισμοὺς ψευδεῖς ἤκουσα καὶ λύπη πολλὴ μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ κύριε ἐπίταξον ὅπως ἀπολυθῶ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνάγκης ταύτης ἀπόλυσόν με εἰς τὸν τόπον τὸν αἰώνιον καὶ μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου κύριε ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ διὸ λυσιτελεῖ μοι ἀποθανεῖν μᾶλλον ἢ βλέπειν ἀνάγκην πολλὴν ἐν τῇ ζωῇ μου καὶ μὴ ἀκούειν ὀνειδισμούς |
| 6 Now therefore deal with me as seems best unto you, and command my spirit to be taken from me, that I may be dissolved, and become earth: for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and have much sorrow: command therefore that I may now be delivered out of this distress, and go into the everlasting place: turn not your face away from me.” | So now according to what is pleasing to you do with me, and command my spirit to be taken up from me, that I may be set free from the face of the earth and become earth. For it is better for me to die than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and great is the grief with me. O Lord, command that I be set free from this distress; set me free into the place everlasting, and do not turn away your face, O Lord, from me. For it is better for me to die than to see great distress in my life, and better not to hear reproaches.” |
| 7 ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ συνέβη τῇ θυγατρὶ Ῥαγουὴλ Σάρρα ἐν Ἐκβατάνοις τῆς Μηδίας καὶ ταύτην ὀνειδισθῆναι ὑπὸ παιδισκῶν πατρὸς αὐτῆς, | 7 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ συνέβη Σάρρα τῇ θυγατρὶ Ῥαγουὴλ τοῦ ἐν Ἐκβατάνοις τῆς Μηδίας καὶ αὐτὴν ἀκοῦσαι ὀνειδισμοὺς ὑπὸ μιᾶς τῶν παιδισκῶν τοῦ πατρὸς ἑαυτῆς |
| 7 It came to pass the same day, that in Ecbatane a city of Mēdia Sarra the daughter of Ragouēl was also reproached by her father’s maids; | On that day, it happened to Sarra daughter of Ragouēl at Ecbatana in Mēdia that she also heard reproaches from one of her father’s maids. |
| 8 ὅτι ἦν δεδομένη ἀνδράσιν ἑπτά, καὶ Ἀσμόδαυς τὸ πονηρὸν δαιμόνιον ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτοὺς πρὶν ἢ γενέσθαι αὐτοὺς μετ᾿ αὐτῆς ὡς ἐν γυναιξίν. καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῇ οὐ συνίεις ἀποπνίγουσά σου τοὺς ἄνδρας; ἤδη ἑπτὰ ἔσχες καὶ ἑνὸς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠνάσθης. | 8 διότι ἦν ἐκδεδομένη ἀνδράσιν ἑπτά καὶ Ἀσμοδαῖος τὸ δαιμόνιον τὸ πονηρὸν ἀπέκτεννεν αὐτοὺς πρὶν ἢ γενέσθαι αὐτοὺς μετ᾿ αὐτῆς καθάπερ ἀποδεδειγμένον ἐστὶν ταῖς γυναιξίν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ἡ παιδίσκη σὺ εἶ ἡ ἀποκτέννουσα τοὺς ἄνδρας σου ἰδοὺ ἤδη ἀπεκδέδοσαι ἑπτὰ ἀνδράσιν καὶ ἑνὸς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠνομάσθης |
| 8 Because she had been married to seven husbands, whom Asmodeus the evil spirit had killed, before they had lain with her. “Do you not know,” said they, “that you have strangled your husbands? you have had already seven husbands, neither were you named after any of them. | For she had been given to seven husbands, and Asmodeus the wicked demon had killed them before they had been with her as is prescribed for wives. So the maid said to her, “You are the one who kills your husbands! Behold, already you have been given to seven husbands, and you have not borne the name of one of them. |
| 9 τί ἡμᾶς μαστιγοῖς; εἰ ἀπέθαναν, βάδιζε μετ᾿ αὐτῶν· μὴ ἴδοιμέν σου υἱὸν ἢ θυγατέρα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. | 9 τί ἡμᾶς μαστιγοῖς περὶ τῶν ἀνδρῶν σου ὅτι ἀπέθανον βάδιζε μετ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ μὴ ἴδοιμεν υἱόν σου μηδὲ θυγατέρα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα |
| 9 Why do you beat us for them? if they are dead, go your ways after them, let us never see a son or daughter of yours.” | Why do you beat us concerning your husbands? Because they are dead? Go with them! And may we never see a son or a daughter of yours!” |
| 10 ταῦτα ἀκούσασα ἐλυπήθη σφόδρα ὥστε ἀπάγξασθαι. καὶ εἶπεν μία μέν εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου· ἐὰν ποιήσω τοῦτο, ὄνειδος αὐτῷ ἐστιν, καὶ τὸ γῆρας αὐτοῦ κατάξω μετ᾿ ὀδύνης εἰς ᾅδου. | 10 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐλυπήθη ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν καὶ ἀναβᾶσα εἰς τὸ ὑπερῷον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς ἠθέλησεν ἀπάγξασθαι καὶ πάλιν ἐλογίσατο καὶ λέγει μήποτε ὀνειδίσωσιν τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ ἐροῦσιν αὐτῷ μία σοὶ ὑπῆρχεν θυγάτηρ ἀγαπητὴ καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπήγξατο ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν καὶ κατάξω τὸ γῆρας τοῦ πατρός μου μετὰ λύπης εἰς ᾅδου χρησιμώτερόν μοί ἐστιν μὴ ἀπάγξασθαι ἀλλὰ δεηθῆναι τοῦ κυρίου ὅπως ἀποθάνω καὶ μηκέτι ὀνειδισμοὺς ἀκούσω ἐν τῇ ζωῇ μου |
| 10 When she heard these things, she was very sorrowful, so that she thought to have strangled herself; and she said, “I am the only daughter of my father, and if I do this, it shall be a reproach unto him, and I shall bring his old age with sorrow unto the grave.” | On that day she was grieved in spirit and wept. And going up into the upper room of her father, she wished to hang herself. But she thought again and said, “Never may they reproach my father and say to him, ‘You had only one beloved daughter, but she hanged herself because of her troubles.’ And I shall bring down my father’s old age with grief into Hades. It is better for me not to hang myself, but to pray the Lord that I may die and no longer hear reproaches in my life.” |
| 11 καὶ ἐδεήθη πρὸς τῇ θυρίδι καὶ εἶπεν εὐλογητὸς εἶ, κύριε ὁ θεός μου, καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ἔντιμον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· εὐλογήσαισάν σὲ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. | 11 ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ διαπετάσασα τὰς χεῖρας πρὸς τὴν θυρίδα ἐδεήθη καὶ εἶπεν εὐλογητὸς εἶ θεὲ ἐλεήμων καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας καὶ εὐλογησάτωσάν σὲ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα |
| 11 Then she prayed toward the window, and said, “Blessed are you, Oh Lord my God, and Your holy and glorious name is blessed and honourable for ever: let all your works praise you for ever. | At that same time, stretching out her hands toward the window, she prayed and said, “Blessed are you, merciful God! And blessed is your name forever, and let all your works praise you forever. |
| 12 καὶ νῦν, κύριε, τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου εἰς σὲ δέδωκα· | 12 καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ σὲ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου ἀνέβλεψα |
| 12 And now, Oh Lord, I set I my eyes and my face toward you, | And now my face is toward you, and I lift up my eyes. |
| 13 εἰπὸν ἀπολῦσαί με ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ μὴ ἀκοῦσαί με μηκέτι ὀνειδισμόν. | 13 εἰπὸν ἀπολυθῆναί με ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ μὴ ἀκούειν με μηκέτι ὀνειδισμούς |
| 13 And say, ‘Take me out of the earth, that I may hear no more the reproach.’ | Command that I be set free from the earth and that I hear reproaches no more. |
| 14 σὺ γινώσκεις, κύριε, ὅτι καθαρά εἰμι ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας ἀνδρὸς | 14 σὺ γινώσκεις δέσποτα ὅτι καθαρά εἰμι ἀπὸ πάσης ἀκαθαρσίας ἀνδρὸς |
| 14 You know, Lord, that I am pure from all sin with man, | You know, O Master, that I am pure from all impurity with a man |
| 15 καὶ οὐκ ἐμόλυνα τὸ ὄνομά μου οὐδὲ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρός μου ἐν τῇ γῇ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας μου. μονογενής εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου, καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχει αὐτῷ παιδίον, ὃ κληρονομήσει αὐτόν, οὐδὲ ἀδελφὸς ἐγγὺς οὐδὲ ὑπάρχων αὐτῷ υἱός, ἵνα συντηρήσω ἐμαυτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα. ἤδη ἀπώλοντό μοι ἑπτά· ἵνα τί μοι ζῆν; καὶ εἰ μὴ δοκεῖ σοὶ ἀποκτεῖναί με, ἐπίταξον ἐπιβλέψαι ἐπ᾿ ἐμὲ καὶ ἐλεῆσαί με καὶ μηκέτι ἀκοῦσαί με ὀνειδισμόν. | 15 καὶ οὐχὶ ἐμόλυνά μου τὸ ὄνομα καὶ οὐδὲ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρός μου ἐν τῇ γῇ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας μου μονογενής εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχει αὐτῷ ἕτερον τέκνον ἵνα κληρονομήσῃ αὐτόν οὐδὲ ἀδελφὸς αὐτῷ ἐγγὺς οὔτε συγγενὴς αὐτῷ ὑπάρχει ἵνα συντηρήσω ἐμαυτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα ἤδη ἀπώλοντό μοι ἑπτά καὶ ἵνα τί μοί ἐστιν ἔτι ζῆν καὶ εἰ μή σοὶ δοκεῖ ἀποκτεῖναί με κύριε νῦν εἰσάκουσον ὀνειδισμόν μου |
| 15 And that I never polluted my name, nor the name of my father, in the land of my captivity: I am the only daughter of my father, neither has he any child to be his heir, neither any near kinsman, nor any son of his alive, to whom I may keep myself for a wife: my seven husbands are already dead; and why should I live? but if it please not you that I should die, command some regard to be had of me, and pity taken of me, that I hear no more reproach. Take me out of the earth, that I may hear no more the reproach.” | and that I did not defile my name or my father’s name in the land of my captivity. I am my father’s only begotten, and he has no other child to be his heir, nor has he a near kinsman or other relative that I should keep myself as wife for him. Seven of mine have already died. So why should I still live? But if it does not please you to kill me, O Lord, hear now my reproach.” |
| 16 καὶ εἰσηκούσθη ἡ προσευχὴ ἀμφοτέρων ἐνώπιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ, | 16 ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ εἰσηκούσθη ἡ προσευχὴ ἀμφοτέρων ἐνώπιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ |
| 16 So the prayers of them both were heard before the majesty of the great God. | At that very moment, the prayer of both was heard in the presence of the glory of God. |
| 17 καὶ ἀπεστάλη Ῥαφαὴλ ἰάσασθαι τοὺς δύο, τοῦ Τωβὶτ λεπίσαι τὰ λευκώματα καὶ Σάρραν τὴν τοῦ Ῥαγουὴλ δοῦναι Τωβία τῷ υἱῷ Τωβὶτ γυναῖκα καὶ δῆσαι Ἀσμόδαυν τὸ πονηρὸν δαιμόνιον, διότι Τωβία ἐπιβάλλει κληρονομῆσαι αὐτήν. ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπιστρέψας Τωβὶτ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ Σάρρα ἡ τοῦ Ῥαγουὴλ κατέβη ἐκ τοῦ ὑπερῴου αὐτῆς. | 17 καὶ ἀπεστάλη Ῥαφαὴλ ἰάσασθαι τοὺς δύο Τωβὶν ἀπολῦσαι τὰ λευκώματα ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ ἵνα ἴδῃ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς τὸ φῶς τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Σάρραν τὴν Ῥαγουὴλ δοῦναι αὐτὴν Τωβία τῷ υἱῷ Τωβὶθ γυναῖκα καὶ λῦσαι Ἀσμοδαῖον τὸ δαιμόνιον τὸ πονηρὸν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς διότι Τωβία ἐπιβάλλει κληρονομῆσαι αὐτὴν παρὰ πάντας τοὺς θέλοντας λαβεῖν αὐτήν ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπέστρεψεν Τωβὶθ ἀπὸ τῆς αὐλῆς εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ Σάρρα ἡ τοῦ Ῥαγουὴλ καὶ αὐτὴ κατέβη ἐκ τοῦ ὑπερῴου |
| 17 And Raphaēl was sent to heal them both, that is, to scale away the whiteness of Tōbit’s eyes, and to give Sarra the daughter of Ragouēl for a wife to Tōbias the son of Tōbit; and to bind Asmodeus the evil spirit; because she belonged to Tōbias by right of inheritance. The selfsame time came Tōbit home, and entered into his house, and Sarra the daughter of Ragouēl came down from her upper chamber. | And Raphaēl was sent to heal the two: Tobis, by removing the white films from his eyes so that he might see with his eyes the light of God, and Sarra daughter of Ragouēl, by giving her to Tōbias son of Tōbith as wife and by freeing Asmodeus the wicked demon from her, because Tōbias had the right to inherit her before all others who desired to have her. At that moment Tōbith returned from the courtyard into his house, and Sarra daughter of Ragouēl also came down herself from the upper room. |
